Brett Dier – Jane The Virgin

Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?

A) Right now all my time is spent on doing “Jane The Virgin!” We are currently on episode thirteen!

Q) How was your character Michael on “Jane The Virgin” originally described to you?

A) While filming the pilot, I didn’t know much about Michael. All I knew is that he loved Jane (Gina Rodriguez), he had a dark past and he was a detective! The rest was up to my imagination, which as an actor is always a blast. I trusted the writing. The character was written really well so it wasn’t too difficult to fall into character. I am on this ride with Michaels life and I’m having a blast living in his skin.

Q) What made you want to be a part of the show?

A) The vibe. The vibe of the show is completely different from anything I’ve ever read. The show is also quirky and I LOVE quirky. The first page I read, I saw the words “Latin narrator.” I knew I was in for a trip. The show makes every character interesting as well. There is not a boring storyline. You want to know where each character goes. And to pull that off with seven lead characters, its pretty rare. I knew the show was special from the first page.

Q) Was there anything you added to the role that wasn’t originally scripted for you?

A) I knew Michael was a detective and during my research I found that detectives had lots of paperwork, which means many hours at a desk. So, I wanted to create something physical. I added a slouch to the character. He has very bad posture and is always crouched over a desk. I feel his mind is too busy to pay attention to his posture so I thought it would be fun to add.

Q) What were some of your most memorable moments from working on “Jane the Virgin?”

A) Working with Brad Silberling on the pilot was a memorable moment for me. I am a huge fan of Jim Carrey, all of his movies, and Brad directed Lemony Snicket with Jim, which I LOVED. So, I was super stoked to work with a director whose movies I ENJOY!!! Lemony Snicket was a big childhood thing for me. I saw the movie in theatres twice when it came out and have watched four or five times since!

Q) What message do you hope people take away from watching the show?

A) I just want people to bond over this. I want this show to bring families closer and escape the business of the world. The relationship that Jane has with her mother and grandma is amazing. They are always there for each other, through the worst of times, and that’s what family is about. I hope people can be inspired by those relationships.

Q) You’re a part of social media. Are you looking forward to the instant fan feedback you will receive when the shows air each week?

A) The feedback is wonderful! I appreciate so much that these people take time to tweet us how much they enjoy the show. It really means a lot to us!

Q) Is there anything else you want to be sure to share with viewers?

A) The show gets crazy. Hang on to your horses and come along for the ride!!!
