Interview By: Lynsey Tamborello

Q) So what are you most excited about this coming season?

Adelaide: I’m very interested in seeing whether or not the baby survives.  If the baby survives, then what kind of impact that has on the marriage of Francis and Mary. I’m also really looking forward to the change in power dynamic between Catherine and Mary.

Q) They’re going to be aligned now, particularly since the plague is coming, right?

Adelaide: Oh, but are they, though? Catherine is just so used to being in power and now Mary is stepping into that place as Queen of France in the wake of King Henry’s death. I think that there’s going to be a power struggle there. I think that Catherine holds her power very, very dear. I think it’s the most important thing in the world to her, besides her children. I don’t think she’s going to give that up without a fight.

Q) How about Francis’ power? How is he coming to terms with his new role?

Toby: I feel that I can just kill anyone I want to. [ADELAIDE shouts “Off with his head!” And laughs]. And, for instance, there’s someone in the new episode who’s becoming a problem and I just thought, ‘Well, why can’t I just kill him?’ But apparently I just can’t just kill anyone I want to.

Q) But kings are allowed to do that. I mean, we saw his father do that all the time.

Toby: Yeah, that didn’t really work out too well.

Adelaide: There was a method to the madness.

Toby: Yeah, I ended up having to kill him because he killed too many people. I think I learned a lesson here: You can’t just go around killing anyone you want. I think that’s the overall the message of the television show – stop killing everyone!

Adelaide: You can’t kill everyone you want!

Q) Season one felt like Mary and Francis are a bit fearless in their relationship and how they approach dealing with both of their countries. Are they going to be as fearless this season or are they going to be more cautious?

Toby: Uh, I don’t know yet.

Adelaide: I think they will be the same. I think that they will be equal parts fearless and fearful. I think you will see them struggling to maintain a healthy supportive marriage in the wake of the, uh, political…

Toby: And a baby.

Adelaide: And a political ideology. And the illegitimate love child that my husband had with my best friend.

Toby: Yeah!

Q) How is Mary going to react when Francis says “This is my only child”?

Toby: [smiles] Really well! She’s just gonna be really cool with it.

Adelaide: [eye roll & jaw drop. Looks at TOBY.] Really?!…NOOO! I think that, personally, if one of my best friends slept with someone in my life I would never be able to forgive either of them. And Mary sort of has to find a way to live with it. And I think having that child will be a constant reminder of her shortcomings as a wife. I think that will increase the pressure by others.

Toby: Yeah

Adelaide: There is the pressure of, “if you can father a child, so it must be me. There must be something wrong with me.” And if she’s barren, she’s worthless.

Q) And we were promised more sex this season. Anything that will top the woman [who fell] out a window?

Adelaide: Sexy time!

Toby: I don’t really think I can top that.

Adelaide: I think that will be the crowning sexual achievement.

Q) What about a flashback to the honeymoon?

Adelaide: We got asked that in a panel before. I just thought it was an excuse to see us in our underwear. You could see me in my corset and him in his long-johns for half an episode.

Toby: In my long-johns?

Adelaide: I don’t know what they would be called. Pantaloons?

Toby: In my pantaloons! [laughs]
