Barbara Mamabolo – In an Instant

Q.  What are the current projects that you are working on?

A.  Right now I’m working on “Instant Star.”

Q.  What can you tell us about the show “Instant Star” and your character?

A.  The premise of the show is about a girl who wins a contest like “American Idol” or “Canadian Idol.”  It’s basically about how her life changes after winning a contest like that.  It pays attention to her work life and her school life and her family life and how that all changes.  I play the lead character’s best friend, I sort of watch her go through all of these changes and kind of get into jealousy issues with her.

Q.  With filming season two right now, what can we expect from your character?

A.  The character in season two is actually kind of bitter, she doesn’t know if she fits in Jude’s world.  Kat doesn’t really know how she fits into the picture, how much her best friend appreciates her.  She’s a doormat at times, but she’s also really excited by the perks in terms of her best friend’s fame.  Her style has changed, she went to New York so she’s got a city style compared to everything last year.

Q.  What made you want to be a part of this show?

A.  I think the concept was great, when you watch shows like “Canadian Idol,” you see them going through the process.  Then you never see what happens after, what happens when they are in the studio, how they feel with the pressures, what happens.

Q.  How is the dynamic of the cast, is there a lot of chemistry?

A.  Definitely, especially in our second season now we all know each other well, we all get along very well.  So, it’s easier to play with each other and work together.

Q.  Do you have a most memorable moment from filming?

A.  Definitely when I was in my zombie costume with a stake through my heart.  I’m excited to see that!

Q.  “Instant Star” has become quite the popular show, did you think it would be as popular as it has become when first working on it?

A.  I think we all got a feeling that we were working on something special.  I think when you get that feeling it makes you work extra hard.  If you’re working on something you want to watch, then chances are other people want to watch it too.

Q.  With shows like “Instant Star,” “Degrassi” and the new show “South of Nowhere,” focusing around teenagers.  Do you find yourself being a role model?

A.  Totally, I find especially for people who are a bit younger than I am, I think that the character of Kat is a great role model for people.  She goes through things, I think that the character I play doesn’t have the insecurities that we all have, she’s just out there.  She doesn’t apologize for that and I think that’s really important for teenagers especially to find out that even if it doesn’t go your way, at least you tried.

Q.  What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

A.  I have been playing guitar in my spare time, that’s my new hobby.  I come home from a day at work and I’m exhausted about everything else and I just hang out with my roommate and play the guitar.

Q.  What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?

A.  Thank you for watching, I really appreciate it.
