A young man is pushing a shopping cart over to a street sign that reads “Boner Street.” As he is taking it off the pole, Officer Adams (Jaleel White) startles him and tells him that people (mainly kids) need to stop taking that sign. A chase ensues that leads to both men to finding a dead body laying in what appears to be a shallow grave inside a fenced off area. On their way to the crime scene Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) end up disagreeing how appropriate it is the mock the street name. Brennan explains how she finds it funny while Booth says it’s immature because the street was named after a prominent family. As Booth tries to change the subject he starts playing an audiobook, which confuses Brennan. Booth explains it’s her latest book that was turned into an audiobook to which Brennan says the narrator is horrible and calls her editor.

When they arrive at the scene Cam (Tamara Taylor) asks if everything is alright. This is easily dismissed by Booth who says they are fine, unlike the man who appeared to have died from a shotgun. Cam agrees with Booth that the killer stood over the victim and shot him at close range causing bones and blood to go everywhere including in the trees. Brennan tells Cam and Booth that because of the skull being shattered getting an ID on the victim will be difficult. As they are discussing this, Aubrey (John Boyd) walks over and tells the group that he had no eye witnesses and found nothing on his search. Aubrey starts talking to Booth about the people in the neighborhood not wanting to talk to law enforcement when he puts his hand on the tree and parts of the victim’s body fell on his shoulder. Cam removes the parts that fell on Aubrey while everyone tells him which dry cleaner is the best. Just then, another piece of the victim falls on Aubrey’s shirt.

At the Jeffersonian Fisher (Joel David Moore) makes an appearance once again and helps Angela (Michaela Conlin), Cam and Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) figure out who the victim was. As they are going over different things they’ve found Hodgins asks if it’s true Brennan will be narrating her own audiobook. Fisher then tells them he doesn’t read Brennan’s books. Angela starts taking pictures again is told to hold on by Cam who caught a flash off a contact lens still inside the victim’s eye. Aubrey tells Karen (Sara Rue) that Hodgins was able to identify the victim as Austin Wilson. He also says to her that Booth and Brennan went to talk to his roommate, Benny (Rafi Gavron), who had a criminal record. As they were walking out Karen bumps into Aubrey’s father, Philip (Guy Boyd). Aubrey tells his dad that he will make it easier on him and tells him to turn around so he can arrest him.

Booth and Brennan are interviewing Benny back at the FBI building when Benny tells them that they grew up in the system and that the one-time Austin got arrested was a misunderstanding and that they were kids in high school going around shaking up soda cans and spraying them in people’s faces. Austin just so happened to do it to an off-duty cop. Benny tells them that Austin was working a construction job to pay for Princeton and he also tells them that Austin was working for a tutoring company because he was applying for med school. Benny tells them that Austin had no life and no girl, that all he did was work and study so they should look at the rich parents. Booth and Brennan go to Bryan Achievement Academy where they meet Amy Bryan (Marsha Thomason) who tells them that they hire only the best tutors from the top schools. Before Amy could show them to Austin’s work computers a girl named Meredith (Haley Tju) comes and demands to know what’s wrong with the vending machine. When Amy tells her the repair men are coming the following week Meredith gets very upset and asks how she’s supposed to focus without snacks. This causes Booth to ask Amy if Austin had any trouble with clients who were demanding. Meredith tells them about Psycho Sue (Julie Claire) the mother of Jacob Casey (Justin Castor). Meredith tells Booth and Brennan that Psycho Sue tried to run her over with her SUV because she beat Jacob at Geography Bee and she saw Sue yelling at Austin then proceeding to slap him across the face.

When Booth and Brennan arrive at the Casey residence, Booth asks her to tell them why she slapped Austin. She tells them that Austin talked Jacob into applying early for UVA, which angered her because their family have gone to Harvard. When Sue tells them that she wasn’t paying Austin to talk her son into a community school that is when Jacob tells his mom that she’s being “psycho.” Booth mentions that five calls were sent to Austin the day he died from their house and Jacob states to them that it was him because he had a huge exam and needed Austin to answer a question. Brennan notices a photo of Sue and her husband hunting with the exact shotguns used to kill Austin. Sue tells them that they had their disagreements, but Austin was a decent tutor and Jacob liked him.

Cam is examining the guns when Hodgins comes in to help. As they talk, Fisher comes in and tells Cam he found blunt force trauma all over Austin’s body. Cam says that it is possible that Austin was beaten before he was shot, which Hodgins then tells them that he wasn’t shot with the Casey’s guns due to the barrel being full of spiders and their webs. Hodgins goes to sit them down and some of the spiders get out in Cam’s office as she’s not looking. Aubrey is going through files from Austin’s tutoring company when Karen comes in and asks if he needs help. He tells her to grab a few. Karen asks Aubrey how it was seeing his father to which Aubrey tells her that his father came to him asking for money to support his new wife and son. Aubrey tells Karen he is finding a pattern and that Austin’s clients used to work with a Matt Bogdan (Mike Erwin).

Back at the Jeffersonian, Angela tells Cam that Aubrey asked her to look into conversations between Matt and Austin and that she found an online chat for tutors only where she noted that they are all mostly work related. Cam asks Angela if Hodgins has been acting weird around her lately and she tells her no. Before they could continue Angela has found a message Matt sent to Austin telling him to back off and that his life was depending on it. When Cam says she will let Booth know, Angela begins to freak out when she notices spiders crawling on Cam’s face. Cam starts smacking them off her face when she says that she knows Hodgins is Angela’s husband only to have Angela say that they will kill him together.

Aubrey and Karen talk to Matt who tells them that he only does the tutoring for the networking and that the kids saw better points when he tutored them over Matt. He could never figure out why parents liked him so much. Hodgins asks if Angela or Fisher had seen Cam which Angela tells him she’s home showering and changing, letting him know she found the spiders. Hodgins tells them that he found ingredients from wrinkle cream by Austin’s manhood area. Fisher says someone much older had their hands down Austin’s pants. As Fisher and Brennan are going over the bones they get into a very passionate discussion over why he doesn’t like her books until he finds a nick in a set of bones indicating Austin head butted a possible jealous husband. Aubrey brings in Gavin Mills (Fred Cross). Gavin checked himself into the hospital with a broken nose the same night Austin died. As Booth is talking to Cornelia Mills (Alexie Gilmore), she explains to Booth she wasn’t sleeping with Austin as she only tried to grab his goods because she knew Gavin was going to walk in the door. As Cornelia tells Booth about the “thrill” they get from getting caught, Gavin tells Aubrey that it feels horrible knowing his wife gets off by being with another man. He also tells Aubrey that this wasn’t the first time his wife has used Austin, but this time Austin seemed angry.

Fisher comes to Cam and Angela bearing info that Hodgins found, but yet didn’t want to give Cam because of the spider incident. Fisher said whatever was used to beat Austin was made of stainless steel and leather. Angela has the computer fill in invoices to match the date and times, which Fisher says that scams like that have been happening a lot. He notes that parents pay college grads to take classes for their kids. Aubrey and Karen go to talk to Amy Bryan again who denies knowing about any cheating that was happening. When Amy walks away Aubrey finds blood on the stairwell and discovers that Austin fell down the stairs. He tells Amy she has to go with them.

Booth and Brennan talk to Amy when Booth says he wants to know why Austin was in the office the night he was killed. Cornelia Mills barges in telling Amy to not answer anymore questions. Cornelia comes in showing a list of students Amy was with and still photos of her eating at a restaurant with friends the night Austin was killed. Cam and Angela reconstruct the crime scene and discovered the gun barrel was shorter, which caused the blood to splatter the way it did. Aubrey and Booth go through files of peopled charged with crimes using a sawed off shot gun and talk about their fathers. They soon found that a store was robbed by a man who looked like Benny who has the same type of gun used to kill Austin. Benny tells them that if they say it’s a sawed off shot gun then it was his gun that killed Austin and that Austin found out about the bad things Benny had been doing. He got mad and told him he was better than that. Benny says that Austin took the gun and ammo and hid it from Benny. He tells them that the kids loved Austin and to look at the parents.

Karen and Aubrey get back from Benny’s place when Karen says that the person they should look for would be the ones who express their affections and would be upset Austin would be leaving. Booth and Brennan head to Jacob Casey’s house who says that since Austin didn’t answer he went to ask Amy what was going on. Before Jacob puts his bike in the car they find blood residue on the peg, Jacob admits to killing Austin after he told him he was just a paycheck.

Aubrey tells his father that he will help the kid and not him. At the diner, Booth tells Aubrey that the kid isn’t really his father’s son. Fisher and Brennan discuss her books and how her agent once sent her fanfiction that wasn’t good. It turns out, with some Brennan investigation, that the fanfiction was once written by Fisher. He ends up telling her he is in a hell of his own making. Brennan tells Booth she destroyed her audiotape because she can read her audience. Booth tells her that there is a big fan of hers in the backroom who would love to hear her read. Brennan grabs one of her books to read to Christine.
