Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) The musical influences range from Liberace to Kurt Cobain to Bowie.

Q) You will be releasing your debut album soon. What is the feel and vibe for it and can you share the name?

A) I love real artistry. I’m not into singers. I gravitate to artists who offer more than just a voice or a song. Ones who offer a lifestyle, they change the world and are pioneers in culture. Stay tuned to @CaryNoKey on Twitter. We will announce the name soon!

Q) What is your process for writing songs? Do you need music to write the lyrics?

A) Good question. I am, in fact, one of those writers who needs to hear a piece of music to generate a lyric or concept. I was first a classical pianist before I ventured into songwriting. For me, the music dictates the direction of the lyric and the sentiment. I usually start by sitting at a piano. One or two chords, depending on the day, can be the catalyst for an idea. Alternatively, I work out a lot of musical bed tracks. Usually, I’ll do a musical track, put it away and call it back up another time to see if a lyric hits me. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. I’ll do that several times and wait for that moment of marriage. Usually it comes, although, it might be a week later, a month or sometimes six plus months.

Q) Your new single is “Now or Never.” What is it about the song that listeners will connect to?

A) “Now or Never” is about urgency and putting it all on the line for what you believe in. The part of life that keeps us going is purpose. Money and material possessions play such a small insignificant role that until we decide to release those ideas and values we are all just prisoners. “Now or Never” is about breaking free from the life that society has led us into, believing that happiness comes in a commercialistic form and matter. Manufacturing does not want you to believe that you can have it all right from inside you. All the elements and tools have already been put into place, right there in your heart and soul. “Now or Never” you can live the live that has awaited you.

Q) What are some of your favorite songs that you can share with fans?

A) One of my favorite Cary NoKey songs is “My Name is Lisa.” It captures the essence of what Cary NoKey is about. The message is about being comfortable in your own skin and owning it. There is no wrong and right when it comes to being the person you need to be to make the most out of this life. The song “My Name is Lisa” lyrically touches on the different sides of personality and alter ego. We all dream. We all long to be these different personalities within ourselves and we all long to be accepted for who we are. That is what “Lisa” is about.

Q) What can fans expect from a live Cary NoKey performance?

A) Fans can expect the unexpected with Cary NoKey. The show changes from day to day. It literally is like a conversation. One feeds off the other. There’s no telling what is going to transpire from one minute to the next. It’s the type of show you can come to five days in a row and see an entirely different show every time. Song sets change, attitudes change, members change…It’s a world onto itself and keeps on rediscovering its own purpose.

Q) You are touring with Macy Gray currently. What have you learned from your experiences alongside her?

A) Macy is the real deal. There is no diva drama with an artist like Macy. She is there for the fans. She does it for them, everything else is secondary. You play every show as if it is the last show you will ever perform. That’s how you get people to pay attention.

Q) How can fans help promote your music?

A) Fans will promote the  music when they actually connect with it for the reason they need to connect with it. Fans promote when they feel part of the movement. When they feel important and relevant inside the scope of an artist, that’s when a true fanbase is born. We do this together. I can’t stand her and say, “Watch me do this.” That’s not fun. It’s when we take the journey together!

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that an important way for you to connect with fans that way?

A) Social media is huge for Cary NoKey because it enables the audience to be a part of the story. They are characters and moving parts in the movie. It won’t work without them. So, they should have a say, a part in the machine. They should feel they can shape and grow with the artist. That’s when social media works.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your music?

A) I would say to them, we’ve only just begun. Take this ride with me. It’s gonna impact all our lives!!!!
