Charity: The Lopez Family Foundation

 

Why this charity is significant:

 

Mega-star Jennifer Lopez and her sister, journalist Lynda Lopez, started the Lopez Family Foundation in 2010 with the goal to help underserved women and children all over the world receive much-needed healthcare.

 

The Foundation partnered with the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to launch the International Telehealth Program. Telehealth and telemedicine make it possible to provide specialized services to women and children globally by using videoconferencing technology. The first telemedicine centers started in Puerto Rico and then expanded to seven more medical centers in Panama.

 

In 2014, the Foundation then partnered with Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx to create the Center for a Healthy Childhood. The mission with Montefiore is to provide community health programs to women and children that promote healthy eating and exercise. They also aim to provide for children beyond the Bronx with help from the New York Public Health Department.

 

In 2015, Jennifer Lopez was recognized by the United Nations as the first-ever Global Advocate for Girls and Women. The Foundation first worked with the UN in 2013 with the Global Moms Relay, an event that is run by the Global Moms Challenge, which aims to help every woman have a healthy pregnancy, safe birth and a strong and healthy baby. With the UN, the Lopez Family Foundation helps to provide health programming and medical support for women and girls.
