Q

Q.  What is it about your role as Logan on "Veronica Mars" that continues to challenge you?

A.  I think somewhat finding a balance that's likable, I think what's likable about him is his sense of fuck all.  Almost what is likable about  him is this rebellious nature towards the world and especially things that are supposed to matter.  I find a lot of fun in playing that, I don't think that it's particularly challenging, it's always fun to kind of come up with news things and I think that's the challenge but that could be in any scene.  I think it's just from an acting view I think it is challenging to play any scene.  In any scene you start with nothing and then you have to create the scene and find little points where you can put in your own creativity.  That's what is fun about it or "challenging."

Q.  Where do you draw your experiences from for your portrayals?

A.  I don't know, I always get these characters and I have no idea how to play them.  I originally read for Duncan and I was like, "Cool, at least that kind of made sense."  I think I played him too dark, like I went into the room and darkened him up too much.  They were like, "No, read for this part."  I was like, "Oh my God, it's the crazy guy, I can't do that!"  I always wind up getting those roles that are so unique and a little bit harder as an actor because they are so much freer.  As soon as I stepped into it I basically was working this scene in acting class and it was this hard-ass guy, very mean, very base and I just toned that down a little bit and added some fun so that's how I came to that.

Q.  The fans have really latched on to Logan, what do you think it about the character that has drawn so many fans to him?

A.  You know, I've been asking myself this question for quite some time.  The first time I noticed was when we were in a mall and an older lady came up to me and said, "I used to hate you; but now I don't know."  I thought I was making some severe progress there in the right direction.  Once you saw the back story where he came from with his father being abusive, I guess he had some empathy or some understanding for that situation and I think that's where it came across  It's cool cuz they write such smart dialogue and I think intelligence is interesting to watch.  I think Kristen is a very bright girl and I am so happy and fortunate that we have someone at the helm; you have to have that sense of intelligence to be able to play that, and I think she does that very well.  I think Logan has part of that quality too of being very intelligent and flippant with big concepts and big dialogue.  There is a lot of undercurrent that I think is very interesting with the show and what's on the page is one thing or what's really going on or being said, there is sarcasm, subtext, that's what I think is interesting.

Q.  The show has such an incredible international following, is that something you ever suspected would happen?

A.  I love that!  It's fantastic because I am so happy that people write in.  You get these postcards and fan mail, which I have been a little late on sending but I try to get it back.  It's cool, you have people coming over here to visit and they just happen to stumble on the set from France and they say that they're watching it.  People are downloading it and really keeping up with it; it's fantastic.  I hope that it is a consideration in continuing the show, I hope that the studios are doing well from that as well.

Q.  There have been so many amazing guest stars on the show, is there anyone you'd love to see guest star?

A.  We have Paul Rudd who is going to come on the show, he already shot his scenes, but I didn't get to work with him a lot.  Sitting on the set and watching what he does; it was pretty amazing.  It's such a fortunate thing, it's like going to all of these acting schools because you see people come in and they have different ways that they work.  Every once in a while you see this person that you know will just be a star and it's so cool to see them come on set and rip a part a scene.  You're like, "Oh my God, I gotta get on my shit and start working again."  I don't know, it's funny, it reinforces you to see these guys.  It's easy when you're given a part every week, you don't have to audition after your first audition.  It's constantly re-impelling the impulse to do well and to work hard.  It's so cool, every once in a while you'll get somebody that all of a sudden shines and you'll be like, "Oh my God, I'm not doing anything!"  It's fun, it's re-invigorating to have these guys on the show, I love it.  Guest stars are a huge part of our show and I really look forward to hopefully having more family members that won't die; that'll be cool.

Q.  I read a while back that you like to check out websites and forums about the show.  Is that something you still do?

A.  Yeah I do, I do, I've been torn between it in the past.  Sometimes you read it and say, "Shit; man" and you start changing your stuff so it pleases people.  But, that's not what got you there in the first place so whenever I try to do that it's not good.  It's cool to see what moments came through, usually I agree with everything.  It's crazy, when you do good work it's so cool that everyone sees it.  On the reverse side, when you think you could have done more, you're like, "Millions of people are going to see this.  Might as well make it damn good, can you imagine that?"  It's so cool, why do OK work, when you have millions of people watching and it's on DVD sets for the rest of time.  It's immortalized so it's fitting to spend your time doing that.

Q.  Do you feel that switching networks has had any effect on viewership?

A.  I think it did because we have had high ratings since that change.  I think being on a station, and I always start with channel two and you go up from channel two so it's only three spots until you hit five; at least in LA anyway.  Instead of going all the way to thirteen and you have to pass all of these other fantastic shows.  I think it's great in that regard and I think following "Gilmore Girls" has been great.  I think it's been great for our show.

Q.  What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?

A.  I am a huge fan of fans and it is so fantastic when they write in; I love that.  You get real feedback and it's inspiring to keep on your game and keep trying.  I am so glad that they are so into it and I think we'd be done if it weren't for the fans.  They are flying banners over the network; which is unbelievable.  I don't think stuff like that has been done and I think to pick our show; I think we were so excited at the start of it.  I didn't think anyone was watching at the beginning, we were just in san Diego shooting, all of a sudden fans started watching and making comments.  It was almost our little niche show and all of a sudden we had this niche audience that was really into what we were doing.  I think that because we were so into it as a cast, really making sure it was good, I think that was very interesting to people.  It was like our attention to that was noticed and I just thank these guys very, very much.
