Q

Q.  How did the idea for "M'Larky" come about?

A.  It's something that my buddies from UCB, we all took classes together a few years ago, we would get together and play around and come up with different characters.  The universe of "M'Larky" was created when we all were just messing around.  We would film ourselves and have these silly movies about "M'Larky" and fighting justice.  It was an outlet just to play with and now it's something that's on TV and I think it's really awesome.

Q.  Obviously the word mlarky has a certain connotation to it, how does it turn into a police show?

A. "M'Larky" came from an improv, I was essentially being this angry chief and I thought wouldn't it be a hysterical name.  Of course m'larky means like craziness or bullshit or wackiness.  I thought wouldn't it be funny to actually have that be the name of the main character, Jon M'Larky.  That's also the name of the show because it's a hodgepodge of all of these different things put together of a show.  It's an homage to cop shows from the 80s and 90s like "Miami Vice" and "TJ Hooker."  Also cops in general, my character Lieutenant Black is essentially and homage to Al Pacino from Heat.  Jon M'Larky is like Clint Eastwood meets Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon.  We have our Tubbs character from "Miami Vice," they had Crockett and Tubbs, and our Tubbs character is Chico Cubs.  He's essentially this fast talking undercover crackhead and they all have super powers.  In this universe people can get shot over and over again, it's like a video game, they just keep on coming and they're able to do amazing things like flying through the air doing John Woo fighting styles.

Q.  How do you shoot the action sequences?

A.  We mix live action with green screen and for the action sequences we actually use video games footage and we splice the two together and make "M'Larky."  We have this video game that we have the license for which is called Redline Rumble which is this driving game.  Whenever the M'Larky character gets his adrenaline up his super power is that he believes he sees the world as a video game which allows him to do all sorts of amazing inhuman feats.  We will take his car and put it in Redline Rumble and we'll have him literally driving through the game from his POV.  We literally pay homage to amazing games like Mortal Kombat and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out.  We pay homage to all of these games from my childhood from the Nintendo and Sega Genesis era.  More recent games and shows slip in there too so it's just video games and cop shows in general.  It's a high action cop show that has action sequences with video game footage spliced in.  It's kind like a hybrid animation/live action show.

Q.  How does that all fit into a web series?

A.  We have five episodes that will air in five minute chunks and each of the five minute chunks come together into one large and amazing pilot.  There are five different episodes and they will air one at a time on Atom.com.  Once they air all of them we'll put them all together as a pilot and show it on comedy Central.

Q.  How did you end up teaming up with Comedy Central?

A.  They had seen my movies and I had met with them before pitching them other projects.  I guess Brian Stern, who is our liaison between Atom and Comedy Central, came to us and said that we should really make a show out of "M'Larky" and we pitched it to Atom and they really dug it.  Now we're about to air it May 19th.

Q.  The show has a slue of guest stars like Gilbert Gottfried and Jeffrey Ross, how did they become involved?

A.  I knew Gilbert from when I did a movie called Hysterical Psycho and we had a great time working with him.  At the time he and I had the same agent and at that time we brought him in for one scene on my movie and that was it.  We called him up for this and he was very happy and excited to work with us again and he's quite hysterical in it.  He plays a cop and he's very much himself so people will be happy.  Jeff Ross is also in it and I know Jeff Ross from the standup comedy circuit.  He's an emcee for a benefit we did for my theater company called Stage 13 and he wanted to come on and help us out.  A lot of it is really going to friends.  We have a lot of great cameos that were just friends who wanted to get involved.

Q.  What do you think it is about the series that will draw viewers in?

A.  Atom is a derivative of Comedy Central so right there you know it's going to be quality comedy on the website.  Atom is also a television show and they pick from the crème de la crème of their website shows and they put them on Atom.  We already know that our show is going to be on Comedy Central so you have to know that they think it's funny.  It's got great people involved and the people that are doing it are friends and they are all doing it for the love of the game and you can really sense that they're having a lot of fun making it.  Everybody that we've shown it to thus far has been falling on the floor laughing their asses off.  I feel pretty confident that people are really going to dig it.  If you like video games, action, cop shows, sex, drugs, and rock and roll, then there is going to be something for you in this show.
