QQ. What are some of the recent projects that you've been working on?
A. I have just been offered a future project working with Clive Owen, which is something that I am excited about. We're going to be filming that later on in the year. I have another movie coming out which is releasing in June. Then I have another movie coming out which is like an action drama that's a true story pulled from the seventies which I am going to be doing as well this year.
Q. You'll also soon be seen in Sex and the City 2, how did you land such a phenomenal role?
A. It was a normal procedure, I was just an actor, but I had done a lot of action movies like Death Race, Kiss of the Dragon, and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. My background has kind of been more action oriented but I wanted to do a romantic comedy. So when my management company sent me the sides for Sex and the City, it was something that I thought, "This is really, really cool!" It was something different and I had never seen Sex and the City before. I read the lines and I taped myself and then the tape went to New York to Michael Patrick King, the director, as well as the producers along with New Line and Warner. Obviously they looked at the tape and thought it was good. Then they brought me to New York and about two weeks later I was taking a break in Mexico and I got a call that they wanted to see me in New York. When I got home I went out and rented the DVD for the first Sex and the City film and I really enjoyed it and understood what kind of film I would be getting involved in. When I went to New York I read with Michael and then he asked me to come back and meet Kim who plays Samantha. I went back and saw her the following day and we read and she said what I did was good. She said that she didn't need to see anymore and I agreed with Kim of course! Michael said it wasn't that easy, not so fast, and that we needed to do more work. I just think that he wanted to see a little more.
Q. How was it getting to film on location in Morocco?
A. That was a fantastic experience! Marrakesh was where I was located and we were in Farouk which is about ten hours inland from Marrakesh which is the desert. We were shooting in the desert at these fantastic locations. It really was pretty special with the sets and everything was amazing. The locations were rich and it really was a fabulous experience. Then I was in New York as well where Sex and the City originates from and that was an exciting experience as well. I think I was lucky I got to shoot in New York where it all happened and began. Most of my movies have been on location, so to actually go to such a beautiful country to shoot a fantastic movie with a great cast, great director, great producers, and a studio backed production, was absolutely incredible. Shooting a movie is always a fantastic adventure, you'll never forget it.
Q. Did you find there was instant chemistry when you began working with Kim or did it take some time to develop?
A. I think there has to be a mutual understanding of likeness. I think it's like, "Yes, I like this person. Yes, I think I can work with this person." There has to be a connection otherwise if the energy wasn't right then I wouldn't be in the position that I am in today playing Rikard. Samantha's character has a big part, and realistically between Kim and Michael, it's their decision. I think when it comes down to it, it's between Michael and Kim to decide.
Q. Was there anything challenging about your role?
A. Absolutely, Samantha! She's a very powerful woman, I'm not going to lie, she is! She's got incredible eyes and a fantastic persona and it was a challenge. She's a very strong character.
Q. How was getting to work with director Michael Patrick King?
A. Just incredible! We got along really well and we had so much fun. He had a lot of fun directing me and I had a lot of fun listening to him. His words of wisdom come from years of knowing exactly what to do, how to make a movie, and how to make Sex and the City work and he knows what to do. We're still very, very good friends now. He's been a huge supporter of mine and in this movie you can see that. The ABC channel interviewed him on Friday and it was a fantastic interview and he introduced my character. You can just see his face, it just lights up, he's like a little school boy. He's very charismatic and extremely professional. I've worked with some fantastic directors and Michael is absolutely there with the best for sure.
Q. You've been getting a lot of attention in the media for your role, is that flattering?
A. I think it's the nature of the business and the nature of the beast. I think it's a very prominent position in the movie, Samantha is Samantha, and Kim plays an incredible character. The character that plays across from her has to have so many different personalities and so many different formulas to be able to roll with Samantha. I haven't stopped doing press for many months, it's been every week, every other day. I didn't realize just how big it was going to be but it's the craziest time of my entire career today.
Q. What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?
A. Just sit back and just enjoy the show and thanks for supporting the show for so long. For me I am just coming in for the tail end of a gargantuan industry. The best thing is to just sit back and enjoy it.
