New Page 1Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?
A) My show "Are We There Yet" comes out on June 2nd. TBS is really making a big, big push and they've blurred the line between broadcast and cable. They are promoting it like crazy so I am really pumped. I am also doing a second season of my reality show "Family Crews" and we'll start filming that in a few weeks. I have three different movies coming out in August. Middle Men is one of them. The biggest one is The Expendables and it stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture, Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren and Steve Austin. Then, I have Lottery Ticket with Bow Wow, Brandon T. Jackson, Charlie Murphy and Ice Cube.
Q) The show "Are We There Yet" is based on the movie with the same name. What are the similarities and the differences between the two?
A) It takes off where the first movie ended. Most movies are all about the get together's, the romantic moments and how it all got started. Most movies don't take place when the euphoria wears off. The TV show takes place six months after they have been married and now they are dealing with real issues. It's real life stuff now that the glimmer and gloss has faded so they have to deal with real issues. I play Nick, played by Ice Cube in the movie, who is dealing with this instant family. When you get married, you have a wife and your wife loves you. That's all good. When you marry an instant family, you have a wife that loves you and you love the kids, but the kids don't love you. You have to find a way to make those kids love you. It's like trying to get married all over again. Here he has to deal with all of this stuff that comes on top of him being a newlywed. There are challenges he faces because the first year is always the hardest and now he has two kids to deal with. So, it is a supreme challenge.
Q) What made you want to be a part of the show?
A) Ice Cube and I have been boys for forever. I like money, I really do. I also like working and as an actor, you just go, "Woo! Thank God for another opportunity to be on another series." "Everybody Hates Chris" was just a pleasure to be on. We did four seasons and eighty-eight episodes. It did really, really well and then I get this call from Matt Alvarez who runs Cube Vision for Ice Cube. They tell me they want to do this show based on the movie. The big thing was we did a lot in a little bit of time. We have done ten episodes and the new model is done. They picked the Tyler Perry model where you kind of do multiple episodes within a week. It is usually the Hollywood way where you do one episode a week. This was kind of ramped up significantly, but we cut out a lot of filler and got focused. It is amazing the stuff you can do when you put your mind to it. That was a big challenge to get to a point where we felt we could do a great show, put in a great show and get the episodes we needed to get out.
Q) What has been your most memorable moment from filming "Are We There Yet?"
A) I think it is being number one on the call sheet. I have never been the main guy on a show before. It really was shocking. Also, on "Everybody Hates Chris" I had two outfits. I had overalls and another work outfit. I had an eight hour fitting for this show and it blew me away! I was like, "No!? You're kidding me!" It was those kind of details that made me think, "Oh man!" I was exhausted after the fitting and we hadn't even gotten started filming anything yet. I was a part of every scene and it is a huge undertaking. It's a lot of work. I was surprised, myself, at it. I enjoy the process so much and I really loved it. It is a lot and it is different. I had to get my endurance up.
Q) Why will people want to take their time to tune in to the show?
A) There are not a lot of family shows out there right now and the ones that are tend to be a bit sarcastic about the family. I think this is something where you can sit down with your kids and watch it without feeling guilty. It has tinges of "Cosby," yet has a new sensibility. It's not fairy tale. It's very in the now. It's a very fun show and at the same time has something for everybody. It's also not Disney Channel where it is all kids. It's got some subject matter that adults will appreciate and that kids will understand and enjoy. There are not a lot of scripted sitcoms on TV right now and the world has kind of went the reality route. That's not bad. I mean, I've even went the reality route. But I am thankful and privileged to have one of the few scripted sitcoms on television.
Q) You mentioned the show will be on TBS. Why do you think this channel is such a great fit for the show?
A) TBS is the bomb! First of all, these cats are totally dedicated to succeeding. I've been on networks where you wondered if they wanted you there. No one promotes it and no one cares. It's out there, but nobody knows about it. You can't control those things, but the dedication I see TBS having they know they've officially blurred that line between broadcast and cable. They are the fifth network, so to speak. I think they can really gain significant ground, especially with Conan O'Brien and George Lopez. Also, there are the other moves they're making like in the NBA arena and NCAA basketball. If you don't have cable, you are going to miss a whole lot! TBS is really in it to win it. TBS, TNT and the whole Turner Entertainment Network are in it to win it and they're not going anywhere.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you! It's not lost on me. One thing I realize is that power is never taken, it's only given. You are only given this success. You can't catch it, wrangle it or anything like that. People have to hand it to you. I appreciate the love and I appreciate this kind of thing because a lot of people go a lot of years and never have it, not once. I am just so honored that people want to see me in this light and I just don't want to let them down. I'll do whatever I have to do to just make it happen for them and just entertain them. We'll get there. We're going to get there together.
