1Q. What are some of the most recent projects that you've been working on?
A. For a past year I was part of a Broadway show "Burn the Floor" as a guest star and then for a few month right before coming back to "So You Think You Can Dance" I was performing around the world as a part of "Burn the Floor" world tour.
Q. What is new this season on "So You Think You Can Dance"?
A. Well as you know Fox changed a format of "So You Think You Can Dance" and added a new twist to the show by bringing back "All Stars"- most memorable contestants from previous seasons.
Q. How do you feel about the change in the rules that the All-Stars can't be eliminated?
A. All stars in my opinion were brought to the show to enhance the level of performances and to let contestants experience new dance styles with confidence in their partner. I feel that with people who have been through the show before and have an idea of how the show works and what to expect plus with expertise in their own dance style, new contestants can really go full out for something they've never tried before and really learn and conquer new dance styles. So eliminating All Stars wouldn't make any sense cause we are there to help with specific dance styles and not to compete against each other or against contestants.
Q. What made you want to return to the show as an All-Star?
A. Returning as an All Star partially is a recognition of your talent by network and fans. Being on "So You Think You Can Dance" stage feels like being back at home and returning to the show as a choreographer on previous few seasons was always a great experience and as a performer on this season is a great privilege. So I didn't have to think twice when the opportunity to come back and perform in my own dance style arose.
Q. Mia Michaels is back but as a Judge, how do you feel about her new position and about Mary Murphy's departure?
A. I really love Mia. She is an inspiration to all dancers. Her expertise is a great benefit to the show. But I personally loved seeing her new creations every week and now when she is a permanent judge it means that she can't choreograph on the show as much as she did before and I'm a little bit sad about it. Mary leaving was a surprise for all of us. As a ballroom expert she was a very big part of the show since almost 30% of it is ballroom dancing and now it feels like critics or comments on ballroom routines are not the same.
Q. Where do you see the longevity of the show?
A. I feel that now we have a new twist on the show it'll bring more of an audience and more memorable routines and dancers cause the elimination process has gotten so much harder and the choreographers really get a new set of tools to work with as far as All Stars. All of it together makes this show look new and more interesting to watch. I think it's like the show is just started over again, new and appealing, and has a lot of more seasons ahead of it before getting old.
Q. Did you have to do any special training in order to prepare for this season?
A. I've had twenty-two years of ballroom training prior to this moment and the fact that I never stopped performing and always continue to improve my skills gave me a solid base for coming back to "So You Think You Can Dance" as an All Star Ballroom expert without taking a "special course" on brushing up on my dance style :)
Q. How has your career evolved since your first appearance on the show?
A. This show gives you an opportunity to showcase your skills to a wide range of audience who never saw you or even your dance style before. It opens up a lot of doors and new possibilities. After the show I was able to move away from teaching, which I always liked, to performing, which I love!!!!! I meet new people and get involved in a lot of interesting projects.
