New Page 1Q) What are the recent projects you are working on?
A) I have "Revenge" right now, which is very constant. That's great! They've been using the character and they are writing a lot of good stuff for Aiden, which I'm enjoying. I'm in all the episodes, which has been fun. Just before I started that, I did the new Darren Aronofsky movie in Iceland called Noah. That's due out in 2014. So, you have to wait and see.
Q) We've seen you recently on the show "Revenge." How was the character of Aiden originally described to you?
A) It was the same way he was introduced to everyone. There is a lot of mystery around what type of person he is. That was something I wanted to play. They sent me the first half of the season, where it looks like he's invested in as being the right side. We wanted to leave it very gray on if he is good or bad and that is something that is going to continue throughout because one of the strengths of the show is that everyone is pretty much on the borderline of being good and bad. The characters that you are rooting for are doing terrible things to people. No one is totally good. I think they want to keep it very mysterious and I think they've managed to do it.
Q) What made you want to be a part of the show?
A) It's a fantastic show! Anyone in their right mind would want to be involved with the show. That was a no-brainer! I like characters that are a little bit unhinged and I like to find the human element to them. I like to give them a sense of humanity that people can relate to, even the most strangest of people. This certainly had all of the elements and was going to be a Mr. & Mrs. Smith between myself and Emily Van Camp's character. That was appealing to try and make that tension work and we've certainly had fun building that side of the story, as well as the revenge side of it. There were an awful lot of pluses and Mike Kelley is a very good salesman. When he calls you to tell you about a part, it's going to end one way. You're going to be on the show.
Q) There is a great physical aspect to your role as Aiden. How did you prepare?
A) I play a lot of soccer and I'm in decent shape anyway. It's just something I kind of do. I enjoy the physicality of it. And, to be honest, I was gifted with being 6'2. I grew up in Liverpool, which is quite a rough part of the UK. My training for these types of roles was done from there, I'm afraid. So, it's not so bad!
Q) You have had to alter your accent a bit for the role.
A) I kind of don't know which is mine anymore! With me being in the states, I've kind of taken the edge off my accent. The accent I'm doing on the show is kind of a character within itself, I think. It's taken over my work! It's good, though, and people are enjoying it. Everyone likes a British accent, I think. I'm certainly enjoying it. At least people are understanding what I'm saying. Sometimes when I speak in my own accent it isn't clear.
Q) There is quite a lot of mystery behind Aiden. Will we get to explore his backstory?
A) Episode eight, which is on November 25th is an entire flashback episode. That is set in 2006 on the night that Aiden and Emily first met. You see what Aiden's agenda is and what he is about. It's when he was a lot rougher and untrained. He's just quite a dangerous, angry young man. That's going to be fun to watch. I'm really excited for it! There are some great guest stars doing some great spots in there. It's going to be fun!
Q) What kind of fan reaction have you been getting to your appearance on "Revenge?"
A) From what I'm hearing from people it's good. Everybody seems to enjoy the character. At one point, I was getting a touch from Nolan (Gabriel Mann) fans that seemed to have issues. But Gabriel and I get on well. So, it's ok off-screen. We're playing at the moment. It's like another love triangle between Emily, Aiden and Nolan. It's like a platonic triangle. That's been fun playing. The fans of Nolan haven't been quite so warm. But I think they're warming to it now.
Q) Is there a storyline you'd like to see Aiden pursue?
A) The writers on the show are amazing. They keep turning out these scripts week after week. They know these characters so well. They know what's in store for Aiden and I trust their skill in guiding him in the right directions. I'll just step into his shoes and make it real. I'll go along with it, whatever they want me to do. It's all been good. I've had no complaints so far. I wouldn't like to try and write something. That's not my forte.
Q) There is such great chemistry between you and Emily Van Camp on screen. Was it instant when you began working together or did it take some time to develop?
A) The very first time we worked together we were on the beach, coming out of the ocean. She had been tied to a post and I had to grab hold of her and drag her out of the water. Then, we had to fight each other. So, it was a baptism of fire. I had literally just gotten off the plane and my pasty British skin was frying in the California sun. But, yeah, we got on. The main thing about chemistry there is a balance. Emily is a fantastic actor and I enjoy working with her. I think when you've got two people who can hold their own then you usually get decent chemistry between the two of them. It's easy working with her. She's fantastic! It's easy to see why the show has been such a success with someone like her leading it. It's a pleasure!
Q) What have been some of your favorite moments from filming "Revenge?"
A) I really loved this episode coming up with the flashback. Obviously, I'm biased because it's very Aiden-centric. I enjoy the interplay. What I love about this show is that I get to play Ninja Aiden and the dark, whispery stuff with Emily. Then, I get to do the slightly more debonair Bond-esque (dare I say) stuff with the suit on - "Pretend Aiden" with the stuff he does when he's at Grayson Global. Then, there is the bitchy Aiden who he deals with Nolan. I think it's pretty fun. There is a cast of characters. That's what I like about this show, anyway. I like all different bits. I couldn't really pick one.
Q) There are a lot of Bond comparisons to Aiden. How does that make you feel?
A) It makes me feel excited! It's a lovely comparison. I think it's in the character. It's all there. It's fun getting to do that kind of stuff. Getting to wear suits is always nice, especially for us guys who tend to wear them only for the winter course. It's nice that they allow me to wear them at a different time.
Q) What do you think it is about "Revenge" that makes the show such a fan favorite program?
A) I think people enjoy the genre. It's got a salty edge to it, you get the right actors, the right writers and you do it properly then everybody loves it. You can never guess. There is so much drama and so many twists and turns. It's fantasy as well because what's nice about a show like this is that you can sit in your own house, apartment or wherever you are and you get taken away to a different place. The sets, the costumes and the way it looks on this show is incredible. You're able to suspend belief for an hour, which is nice in anyone's life. I think people enjoy fantasy and that's why they watch "Once Upon A Time" and shows like that. It's a heightened reality, which I think is nice and half of why the show is such a success. You're able to switch off for a little bit and go to another place. That's what I do and I've got no qualms about it.
Q) Where can people go online to learn more about you?
A) I am on Twitter at @BarrySloane. That is my Twitter account and I post nonsense. I mostly post about Liverpool Football Club. So, if you're a fan of nonsense and Liverpool Football Club it's a good place to go. I do shameless plugs for the show, as well.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you to everybody who has liked it so far. Thank you so much for the support. Keep enjoying the show and keep enjoying what Aiden is doing. I'm sure there will be a lot more fun stuff to come along the way. Keep watching because we're filming episode twelve now and it's going to be very exciting. It's going to be a good season so stay tuned!
