The Boys Are Back weaves the tale of sports writer Joe Warr (Clive Owen) who has lived his life as a professional while his wife Katy (Laura Fraser) has taken care of their son Artie (Nicholas McAnulty). Katy develops cancer and dies rather quickly leaving Joe to care for Artie alone, and with no parenting skills as well. Adding to all of this is Harry's (George MacKay) arrival, Joe's teenage son from a previous marriage. Joe's life quickly spirals out of control as he tries to maintain globe trots with his job along with keeping his household together with the kids all the while having some assistance with his disapproving mother-in-law. Thankfully he befriends a fellow parent named Laura (Emma Booth) who sees Joe as a potential romantic partner, but then only ends up finding his hardened exterior too hard to penetrate.
Owen does a phenomenal job as the torn up and frustrated Joe and has great chemistry with Emma Booth. The storyline is so full of drama and intensity that the movie flows seamlessly. The way the film portrays the dynamic to the relationship between father and son is magnificent and Owen turns the film into true beauty.
