A vase gets broken and Julia (Erika Christensen) is mad. Her daughter, Sydney (Savannah Paige Rae), claims that the neighbor's dog Skippy knocked it down. Julia knows full well that Skippy is dead and orders her husband Joel (Sam Jaeger) to put the broom down. The person who broke it can clean it. Sydney is quick to remind them that Skippy doesn't know how to clean, but Julia reminds her that there is no excuse for lying. Sydney thinks that Julia is the liar, but is corrected when she is told Julia is a lawyer. Well, according to Harmony's mom, lawyers and liars are the same thing.
Drew (Miles Heizer) is busy flirting with Lindsay while complaining that the school should have used their money for something better than a dance. Lindsay says that she is going to attend so Drew asks his sister Amber (Mae Whitman) for advice. Amber helps him pick out what to wear when Sarah barges in with news that they are going to work doing catering at a college function the next night so Amber can see the school. They will be catering at a poetry reading, but Amber is not interested.
Crosby (Dax Shepherd) is still watching a movie while Jabbar (Tyree Brown) and Jasmine (Joy Bryant) are falling asleep. He puts Jabbar to bed and returns to Jasmine. He leans in for a kiss, but is pushed away.
Meanwhile, Kristina (Monica Potter) finds out that her friend Denise is going to be announcing her candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Sacramento. She is hoping that Kristina will step in and assist her this weekend. Kristina discusses it with Adam (Peter Krause) and he thinks it is a good idea. He is more interested though in the new bra that arrived and wants Kristina to try it on. It isn't long though before they realize that the bra is actually something their daughter Haddie (Sarah Ramos) ordered. Adam is not pleased.
The next day Kristina talks to Haddie about the package and explains that her father accidentally opened it. He then threw it away. Kristina says that she saved it for her, but Haddie is still mad about the violation of privacy. Kristina wants Haddie to assure her that she is being smart and careful. She wants to hear that Haddie is not having sex or doing anything more than making out. Haddie leaves, claiming she'll be late for school. Kristina yells after her, "I trust you!"
Crosby tells Adam that watching Jasmine give birth to Jabbar may have warped him, but he thinks hanging out with both of them will help him get to know them. Adam thinks that the easy solution would be asking Jasmine on a date.
Upstairs, Kristina is rallying her sisters to help pick out clothes for her big weekend. Sadly, she doesn't think any of them suit her. While they talk, Kristina shares that Haddie bought her first lace bra and Sarah wants to know the level of lace (apparently, the more lace there is the further the base Haddie will go). Julia is just grateful that Sydney's lying is not her fault, but isn't fond of Sarah's lawyer joke. Sarah backs down since she is a bartender and Amber doesn't even want to go to college. Kristina is surprised and insists that Amber has to go, even if Sarah isn't able to force her. With that, the ladies decide that daughters are the biggest problem mothers face.
Drew stops by looking for Adam because he is nervous about the dance. He isn't a great dancer and hopes Adam can help. Adam assures Drew that he's come to the right place since when he was in high school he used to be called "Fever," as in Saturday Night Fever. Anyway, supposedly, Adam was a good dancer. So, he cranks up the tunes and starts to teach Drew some of his classic moves. When the ladies head downstairs, they join in on the boogie and get dancing, too.
Crosby heads over to Jasmine's house to return a missing sock from Jabbar and admits that he was interested in asking her on a date. They agree to go out to dinner on Saturday night.
Kristina, distraught with guilt over leaving her family, she gets into her car to head out for the weekend, but phones Adam. She thinks it was a mistake to take the job, but Adam assures her she is on the right path and can handle it.
The broken vase is still on the floor at Julia's place and Sydney sits down at the kitchen table to discuss the Declaration of Independence. Julia tells her it was written by the Thomas Jefferson, a founding father, a President of our country and a lawyer. She explains that America was create by lawyers so that the next time Harmony's mom insults lawyers that she should tell her that she's really insulting America. Julia asks if Sydney has anything she wants to say, but the only thing she wants to discuss is when Jabbar will arrive for their sleep over.
Kristina meets with the Councilwoman and is greeted warmly. The Councilwoman introduces Kristina to her useful staff and then steps out of the room. Kristina does her best to fit in and get started, but when one staff member refers to another as "dude," which immediately puts her off. Well, it seems that her Filofax and old papers give the others a similar feeling. She prepares to write a position paper when a staff member asks Kristina to write up a series of Tweets instead. Odd...
Adam is busy trying to get Max to turn off the TV when Haddie brazenly walks down the stairs wearing a shirt that reveals her new bra. She claims she cleared with her mom that she could spend the evening with her boyfriend Steve. The doorbell rings just as Adam is beginning to freak out. Drew is at the door and is trying to weasel out of having to go to the dance. Adam takes this chance to order Haddie to stay home with Max until he gets home from taking Drew to the dance.
Jasmine and Crosby drop Jabbar over at Julia's for the sleepover with Sydney, where they notice the vase is still on the floor. Julia tells them it will be remaining there until Sydney confesses, which Crosby thinks is nuts.
Over at the college campus, Sarah is trying to psych Amber up for their visit by showing her around the campus. Amber doesn't think she can get into the college with her grades. Besides, why would she want to go to school with the douches that attend anyway? Later while catering the poetry reading, Sarah runs into her former beau/ barista Jim Kazinsky (Mike O'Malley). Jim feels that running into her is a sign, but Sarah isn't interested. Sarah intercedes and introduces Jim to Amber as a guy she went to school with. Suddenly, the room erupts in applause and Jim takes the stage, as it seems Jim is actually the guest of honor! Now, Sarah's already rough evening begins to get worse since Jim begins reading several poems from his new book The One Who Got Away...Twice. One of the poems gives Amber a clear sign that it is about her mother's private parts. Sarah is absolutely mortified.
While catering the poetry reading, Sarah's shocked to see poet and barista Jim Kazinsky, and even more shocked to find out that he's the guest of honor. Jim thinks it's a sign, but Sarah waves it off, introducing him to Amber as a guy she went to high school with. Amidst heartfelt applause, Jim takes the stage, telling everyone that it's going to be a very special night, wink wink. Both Amber and Sarah know that it's going to be more like a nightmare...
Kristina and her new coworkers meet with Assemblyman Fortunato to try and receive his endorsement. Fortunato doesn't seem interested since he feels that the Councilwoman is going to be up against powerful people who have long memories. Kristina knows that her younger colleagues aren't familiar with this area so she steps in. She reminds Fortunato of his first accomplishments while in office and notes that the Councilwoman is hoping to make similar achievements, but she'll need his help.
The big date between Jasmine and Crosby seems to be going well. It just gets a little awkward when Julia phones to say that Jabbar is insisting on going home, but he won't say why. Jabbar gets on the phone and explains he has to go poop. This ends the date and the couple head over to "save" their son.
Adam and Drew return from the dance unsuccessfully. Drew asked his lady friend to dance, but she turned him down. Haddie is ready to go to Steve's since Max is now in bed, but Adam refuses to let her go. Haddie says that if the issue is the bra then she won't wear it. She takes it off, throws it at her dad and runs out with him yelling after her.
Jasmine and Crosby arrive at Julia's to take Jabbar to the bathroom. He is still too nervous so Jasmine suggests singing to help. While they sing "Wheels on the Bus," Jabbar has success. After returning home from solving Jabbar's problem, Crosby and Jasmine begin a hot make-out session.
To track down Haddie, Adam piles Drew and Max in the car. They head over to Steve's house and tell his parents there is a family emergency. Adam charges upstairs in their house towards Steve's bedroom and finds Haddie in the throes of a make-out session. Adam insists they need to leave that minute.
Sarah is shaking her head on the way home. She can't believe that Jim used to copy off her papers in 10th grade and now he's a published author. Amber is is still grossed out from having heard too many poems about her mother's vagina. Sarah is still determined to make her point, though. She notes that Jim was inspired by reading Dylan Thomas in high school, which is the reason she had brought Amber to the college that night. She wanted her to learn not to give up on herself, as Jim is living proof.
Back at the Braverman home, Adam lays into Haddie for her inappropriate behavior. He tells her that as long as she is living in his house that she'll follow what he says. Haddie forces her father to admit that all his anger is stemming from the kind of bra she bought, which makes him inconsistent and hypocritical. She notes that Adam is willing to help Drew get a girl, but not Haddie because she's a female. She notices the double standard being unfair, but that's the way it is.
The next morning Jasmine and Crosby wake after having an incredible night and it is almost time to pick up Jabbar. Because Julia is such a perfectionist, Crosby needs to get up and go so that he isn't late to get his son. He hustles out of bed and promises to come back shortly.
Sydney comes out of her bedroom and finally admits to her mom to breaking the vase. She asks if her mom is happy now, but Julia doesn't understand since it is all about being honest. Sydney believes it is all about winning and losing and it seems this time she lost.
Amber hands her mom a Berkley catalog and Sarah refuses to get excited. She feels like she won't let her heart break should later Amber decide not to apply. Amber explains to her mom that the catalog is for her because if Jim can get people excited over his poetry, then anything is possible. So, Sarah shouldn't give up on herself.
Kristina arrives home and finds Adam laying in bed reading a book. She tells him that her trip was amazing and that she was offered a job as Communications Director. Kristina told the Councilwoman she had to think it over and talk to her husband, but Adam says he is confident they can work it out. He mentions all the changes they will need to make, which makes Kristina back off. Adam doesn't want her looking back with regrets though, but she notes that their kids will only be children for so long and there will be other campaigns.
