Paul Crewe's (Adam Sandler) life hasn't been the same since he was convicted of shaving points off of a football game, he used to be a high profile quarterback. His life goes in a giant whirlwind though when he decides to take his girlfriends car for a joyride while drunk. He wrecks up the car and is sentenced to jail, only it's a prison in a very remote area. It turns out Paul was sent there due to a rather large request from the warden, Warden Hazen (James Cromwell), who seems to have his own football team of guards. He has basically recruited Paul to help train his team of guards in football because they haven't won a championship in a few years. At first Paul refuses, due to some rather painful insistence by Captain Knauer (William Fichtner), the head of the guards. Then when the warden offers him up the chance to coach a team of guys who are the jailbirds, Crewe changes his tune, and a game of guards versus prisoners is set up. Paul's team is not only headed up by himself, but he finds a pal and an assistant coach in Caretaker (Chris Rock). Paul also gets some assistance with the help of Coach Nate Scarborough (Burt Reynolds), a former Heisman trophy winner.
Crewe has a rather large and arduous task ahead of him, setting up a team of jailbirds isn't easy, even with all the help he gets. He first finds a few players willing to sign up for the team. But then Paul has to go on sort of a "recruiting" spree in order to find players worthy of the team. Wouldn't you know it, when he mentions the fact that the team gets to beat up on the guards, a lot of prospective players start falling into line. The task ahead of Crewe is getting a bunch of misfits to act like a team and get them to hit hard or go home. These misfits include a large guy named Switowski (Bob Sapp) who has the physique of a bodybuilder but the mind of a three-year-old. There is also Brucie (Nicholas Turturro), he tries to act tough and thinks he's a great player, but he is really just one stupid individual with no talent. After playing a rousing and painful game of basketball against one of the toughest guys in the prison, Paul wins over Earl Megget (Nelly) who is quite the speed demon. Can Paul and his boys get their act together and squash the violent and torturous guards and teach the warden a lesson or two? Or is he stuck to rot in the prison with a bunch of delinquents?
Adam Sandler and Chris Rock prove they make one hell of a team in this hilarious comedy. Adam Sandler continues to make nothing but gold throughout his movie career. The two double team the comedy in this movie and make it one film really worth watching! Burt Reynolds holds his own as the worn down Scarborough but it's nice to see him back to his acting chops. After all, this movie is an actual remake of the 1974 film of the same title, in which Reynolds played the role of Paul. Even Nelly holds his own in the film and provides for great watching, he might have an acting career! Littered throughout the movie as guards you'll see various WWF wrestlers like Kevin Nash, Bill Goldberg and Steve Austin. You'll also see a few pro football players in the film as well, check out Michael Irvin as Deacon Moss, Terry Crews, Bill Romanowski, Brian Bosworth and a few others. Adam Sandler even gives his good buddy Rob Schneider his usual cameo in the film cheering the team on by saying, "you can do it!" Don't miss Tracy Morgan as Ms. Tucker, a transvestite who has a little crush on Paul Crewe.
You're seriously missing out on a terrific and funny movie if you don't take the time to check out this film. It's got an all star cast and one interesting premise, it's a definite win in my book. Head to the theater and catch The Longest Yard, it's quite the touch down!
