The episode opens as the newly engaged Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) is in a meeting at the law firm and happily telling everyone she’s engaged. “Look how good my ring looks in someone’s face,” Rebecca says sticking her hand in George’s (Danny Jolles) face. Karen (Stephnie Weir) reminds that if Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III) bought the Garfinkel ring back from the pawn shop, it’s not really like him buying her a new engagement ring. And how special can it be since Rebecca pawned it in the first place? Paula (Donna Lynne Champlin) and Darryl are happy for Rebecca and Mrs. Hernandez (Gina Gallego) and Karen have a few words to add about engagements. Karen has been engaged to a prison inmate named Marcus for the last twelve years.

Nathaniel (Scott Michael Foster) enters the meeting and Rebecca tells him of her engagement. “Is that why you look halfway decent?” Nathaniel asks Rebecca, being his usual charming self. He comments that the best part of any relationship is the pursuit saying, “The pursuit is the fun, we’re hunters by nature. Nobody likes a needy whore.” In the breakroom, Paula and Rebecca are talking about the engagement. Paula remembers how it used to be with Scott (Steve Munroe) in the beginning and how he used to give her goosebumps. But if Paula were to take Scott back, everyone would think she was being a doormat. When Rebecca leaves, Darryl enters and tells Paula he could be a great sounding board.

Rebecca is so happy. She is in love and she is engaged. What could go wrong? Well, let me tell you Rebecca. There are strong winds brewing – the Santa Ana Winds. These are not exactly “a summer breeze.” They’re called the “devil winds” and cause people to act weird. Rebecca talks with Josh about their dream wedding location, which is in Malibu where Catalina Wine Mixer from Step Brothers was filmed. But, unfortunately, the location is booked up for two years. “What’s two years when we’re going to be married forever,” Josh says. Sadly, those darn devil winds are messing with Josh’s allergies. The weatherman Gavin Johnson (Eric Michael Roy) from the news that Josh and Rebecca have on the television begins singing “Devil Winds.” He is The Santa Ana Wind. The lyrics go “I’ll be back because I’m the wind. And also kind of the narrator.”

Back at work, Rebecca is in a meeting when the Santa Ana Winds blow her blouse open. Nathaniel can’t help, but show an interest and mention the sexual tension between the two builds. Rebecca rushes home so Josh can give her goosebumps, but Josh has taken his allergy medicine and is out like a light. Later that night, both Rebecca and Nathaniel dream about having sex with each other.

The next day at work, Karen tells Paula about her dream that Karen married her pet snake, Long John Slithers. Paula tells Karen about the dream she had in which she was in a funeral home and saw Darryl (Pete Gardner) lying in a casket holding an oil painting of he and Paula. “I’m here, stop talking about dumb stuff,” Nathaniel says entering the breakroom. Karen tells him that because of The Devil Winds they all had weird dreams last night. She asks whether Nathaniel had a weird dream. “I dreamt I didn’t work with morons,” he answers, trying to cover about his real dream. After Karen and Paula leave, Rebecca enters. She and Nathaniel have an awkward moment over coffee creamer and briefly touch hands. Rebecca gets goosebumps. What is going on here? Paula apologizes to Darryl for not being nice to him sometimes. She appreciates him and if he wanted to pose with her for an oil painting, she would be okay with it. Way to try to interpret your dream Paula! Darryl suggests they go out to dinner tonight at a new restaurant he’s been wanting to try. After Darryl leaves, Rebecca tells Paula about her dream about Nathaniel. Paula urges Rebecca to not get stuck in any some spaces with Nathaniel. For the rest of the day, Rebecca is able to avoid Nathaniel. That is until she gets on the elevator to go home and Nathaniel does, too. The Santa Ana Winds begins singing again. He’s a prankster who wants to see what will happen so he causes a power surge. Rebecca and Nathaniel get stuck on the elevator together. Darn that prankster, devil, Santa Ana Winds!

At dinner, Paula tells Darryl that the expensive restaurant is near Scott’s apartment. Darryl thinks that Paula should give Scott another chance since he overheard her telling Mrs. Hernandez that Paula didn’t think Scott would cheat again. Paula says she’ll think about it. Darryl leaves the table to use the restroom.

Back in closed quarters with the person you’ve had sexual dreams about a/k/a the elevator, Rebecca is panicking because she’s trapped with Nathaniel. Help arrives in the form of George and all he wants them to do is “say my name.” Great, neither Rebecca nor Nathaniel remembers George’s name. Nathaniel angrily tells George that if he made an impression, they’d remember his name. Nathaniel then demands that he let them out. George gives them a clue by talking about the principles of George Washington. “Is his name Washington?” Nathaniel asks Rebecca. George says he hopes they enjoy the weekend trapped in the elevator then leaves. What do they do now? “Let’s have intercourse,” Nathaniel sings. Rebecca insists that she doesn’t want to have hot, sweaty, elevator sex with him. She learns that Nathaniel read the Harry Potter books in a week.

Meanwhile, Paula is surprised when Scott arrives at the restaurant because Darryl called him. Scott pleads with Paula to take him back then leaves. Paula angrily confronts Darryl over his interference.

The elevator door finally opens, but before she leaves Rebecca kisses Nathaniel. She runs into the Santa Ana Winds outside and the Devil Winds taunts her in song “You’re super weird, you ruined everything.” When she gets home, Rebecca manages to get another couple to give her their wedding date (in exchange for a lot of money) then lies to Josh that the wedding venue had a cancellation and they can get married in two weeks.

At the office the next day, Rebecca tells Paula that the wedding date has been moved up. Rebecca reminds Paula that you can’t live your life worrying about what people think. And with that, Paula takes Scott back. Later, Paula tells Darryl that because of his overstepping she and Scott are going to give their marriage another chance. Darryl pulls out his ukulele and sings the song “You’re My Best Friend (And I Know I’m Not Yours).” When he finishes, Paula tells him that he’s actually her best male friend.

In the breakroom, Rebecca tells Nathaniel her news that she is getting married in two weeks. After she leaves, George enters and is surprised that Nathaniel now knows his name. Nathaniel tells George he finally made an impression. Then, Nathaniel fires George. But George doesn’t seem upset. “He knows my name,” George says smiling.

As the episode closes, Karen receives a telephone call from her prison inmate fiancé Marcus. She apologizes for not coming to visit as she’s been busy with Long John Slithers. But Marcus wants her to choose. “What’s a girl to do when she’s stuck between two men, especially when one’s a snake,” Karen sings in a reprise of “The Math of Love Triangles.”
