Crazy Ex-Girlfriend – Nathaniel Is Irrelevant

It’s the season finale of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) is brushing her hair while looking in the mirror. She’s startled when Trent (Paul Welsh) appears. Rebecca reminds that he said he would go away, but Trent tells Rebecca that he’ll never leave her because they are a part of each other. Then, he howls like he was taught by the coyotes. Rebecca jumps up in bed.  Thankful, it was just a nightmare. But to be sure, Rebecca looks out the window and checks under the bed. Yep, no sign of Trent.

Meanwhile, Nathaniel (Scott Michael Foster) and Mona (Lyndon Smith) are furniture shopping.  Mona calls a particular rug she likes a dream, but although he likes it, Nathaniel doesn’t love it (is this how he feels about Mona herself?) Mona comments how they seems to be the only couple there that isn’t fighting. Nathaniel suggests that Mona finds something about him that she doesn’t like. “Well, you cheated on me a ton,” Mona says. “I don’t know why I thought that would be a fun game to play,” Nathaniel says fun-lovingly.

At Heather’s (Vella Lovell) last appointment before giving birth, Dr. Pratt (David Wain) is surprised to see so many people there. In addition to Heather and Darryl (Pete Gardner), there’s Paula (Donna Lynn Champlin), Hector (Erick Lopez), Valencia (Gabrielle Ruiz), Beth (Emma Willman) and Rebecca. “I’m Rebecca, I donated the egg so that thing has my DNA in it so good luck with that.” “I’m Dr. Pratt. I’m going to be delivering the baby so I’m also important,” Heather’s doctor says. As she’s tired, Rebecca leaves to take a nap. Dr. Pratt asks Heather whether she has any concerns. “I agreed to carry this baby for free because I’m whimsical and random, but now I have to give birth to a baby. Oops.” Heather asks the doctor to hit her over the head with a hammer and wake her up when it’s over. Dr. Pratt understands Heather’s worry that childbirth hurts, but assures that some women experience some discomfort. Paula corrects “Dr. No Vagina” that, of course, child birth hurts but in the end it’s worth it. This leads to Paula’s song “The Miracle of Birth” in which she sings about the expansion of the cervix, the vagina enlarging, the crowning of the head etc. The song concludes with the question of whether wrecking her body was worth it. Paula says it is and asks Dr. Pratt, who is busy hurling!

Paula finds Rebecca and asks her what happened back in the examining room. Rebecca tells her that she’s been having dreams about Trent. Paula fells guilty for bringing Trent into Rebecca’s life by suggesting she find a fake boyfriend on Facebook. But the tracker that was placed on Trent shows he’s in Iowa with his mom.

At the firm, Nathaniel tells Rebecca about the party he and Mona are having to celebrate they’re moving in with each other. He wanted her to know because some of the tolerable people from the office are coming and he didn’t want her feeling left out. While Nathaniel is talking, Rebecca sees Trent again and screams.

Rebecca meets with Bert (Michael Hitchcock), Lana (Arden Belle) and Clarice (Carrie Clifford) from her therapy group and tells them about her visions of Trent. She wonders if the manifestations could be her guilt over all the things she’s done since arriving in West Covina that she gotten away with. Bert suggests that if Rebecca just confess the things that she’s done, she’ll feel a lot better.

Later at Bunch, Plimpton, Plimpton & Associates, Paula asks Nathaniel who called the meeting. “I don’t know. The subject line said The Purge. So are we throwing up or watching a movie?” Nathaniel answers. Rebecca enters; she is glad they got her calendar invite. Paula asks Rebecca what’s going on. Rebecca answers she’ll tell all but they are awaiting on one more person. Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III) enters. He apologizes for being late but someone asked him to change the water cooler bottle first. Rebecca announces that she has some things to say, and it’s going to be brutal.

Darryl gives Heather everyone’s itinerary in the delivery room: Hector will be doing snacks, Beth will be getting coffee, Valencia doing the video and Paula dispensing ice chips and wisdom. He doesn’t know what Rebecca will be doing so she can be a floater.  Heather tells Darryl that the only person that will be in the delivery room will be him. It may be his baby but it’s her birth. As she’s freaking out after that talk with Paula, she doesn’t want anyone there. Heather realizes that Darryl wanting to make the child birth a group thing is because he misses White Josh (David Hull). Suddenly, Heather has a pain. She doesn’t think it’s actually labor but “Toni Braxton” contractions. But when the pain gets steadily worse, Heather realizes she’s in labor and tells Darryl to get the car and take her to the hospital.

At ‘The Purge’ meeting, Rebecca gives Josh, Paula and Nathaniel lists of everything she’s done. Nathaniel can’t believe she put out a hit on Mona. Josh and Paula are surprised that she (Rebecca) slept with Greg’s father. Josh can’t believe that Rebecca sent him her poo. When she reads that Rebecca lied that Trent was blackmailing her (Paula) to get Paula to commit federal crimes that she didn’t want to do, a hurt Paula storms out of the conference room. Josh is shocked Rebecca tried to have his grandfather killed and his father deported. Nathaniel admits both of those were him. “But to be fair I was promised sex,” Nathaniel says which earns him a punch in the face from Josh.

Rebecca runs to stop Paula from leaving and catches her up with her at the elevator. Paula is upset and heartbroken about Rebecca lying to her and says that Rebecca is never going to change. When the elevator takes too long, Paula decides to take the stairs. That’s when the elevator comes and Rebecca sees Trent on it!  She at first thinks that he’s another manifestation, but when she touches him, realizes he’s real. Rebecca asks Trent why he is back as he said he was leaving town for good; he knows that she will never love him and they’ll never be together.  Trent tells Rebecca that he understands that now. But he’s there for something else, which she’ll find out soon enough. After he leaves, Rebecca tries to use Trent’s spy tracking device but when it doesn’t work, calls Paula and leaves a message on his voice mail. At home, Paula plays Rebecca’s voice mail over and over. Her husband Scott (Steve Monroe) overhears and comments how Rebecca sounds really scared.  He asks Paula whether she’s going to call her back. “No, I’m done,” Paula answers.

At the firm, George (Danny Jolles) orders Rebecca to stay away from Nathaniel, saying that she is dangerous.  Nathaniel goes home and frantically calls out from Mona. She didn’t hear him because she was in the shower. He assures that nothing happened at work that would make him be concerned about her.

At the hospital, Dr. Pratt confirms that Heather is definitely in labor. “According to your birth plan, it says you want to labor naturally for as long as possible,” says Dr. Pratt. Heather says that’s wrong, snatching the form from him. “What man filled this out,” Heather asks as the form is obviously wrong. Darryl admits that he was the one who completed the paper work.  He explains that epidurals can delay labor. Heather orders Dr. Pratt to look at her. “I want drugs, all of the drugs.  Give them to me now!”

At their party, George arrives with a bag of ice in case Nathaniel runs out.  But Nathaniel orders George to leave with his gas station ice.

Besides for forgetting that John Stamos played Uncle Jesse in “Full House,” Heather had an epidural and is feeling no pain while in labor.

Rebecca receives Instagram stories on her cell phone from Trent in which he talks about losing someone he loves and making sure Rebecca feels the same loss. “Nathaniel Plimpton III must be destroyed. #Motive” Trent writes. Meanwhile at the party, Trent is disguised as a waiter and tells Nathaniel he needs him to sign off on a few extras like mayo, mustard and ketchup. Trent grabs a turkey carver to stab Nathaniel with but looks around for Rebecca because he needs for her to see it.  Meanwhile, Rebecca frantically runs down the street to get to the party to stop Trent from hurting Nathaniel. She finally gets there and asks George, Maya (Esther Povitsky) and Tim (Michael McMillian) whether they know where Nathaniel is. Rebecca finds Trent and Nathaniel right as Trent is about to stab Nathaniel.  In a panic, she pushes Trent off the building!

Heather gives birth to a healthy baby girl. While Heather sleeps, White Josh arrives (Heather had called him) and meets Darryl’s daughter. They both admit how much they’ve missed the other.

Rebecca is arrested.  But Trent isn’t dead. He fill into the swimming pool but missed the diving pool. As she is put into the police car, Rebecca tells Tim, Maya and George to call Paula.

At the police station, Nathaniel tells Rebecca that she is being charged with attempted second degree murder. He broke up with Mona because he’s in love with her (Rebecca). Nathaniel will be representing Rebecca. He says he’s come up with a way of getting her off: Plead temporary insanity. Nathaniel thinks that with her BPD and stints in a mental hospital, the judge will believe it. Then, Nathaniel sings a song about how nothing is ever their fault as they are victims of bad childhoods. But the only good thing to come out of it is that their paths lead them to each other.

At the hearing, the judge (Angela Robinson Witherspoon) reads the formal charges and asks Rebecca how she pleads. Before Rebecca can answer, Paula enters. Rebecca realizes that even with her BPD and bad parents, she’s responsible for everything she’s done and wants to take responsibility for her actions. Rebecca tells Paula that she’s (Rebecca) is going to try to change. “I plead responsible. I plead guilty,” Rebecca tells the judge.
