Dead of Summer – She Talks to Angels

Amy (Elizabeth Lail) is wiping off Deb’s (Elizabeth Mitchell) blood as she remembers her murder just a few minutes prior.  Jessie (Paulina Singer) is outside, rewatching Joel’s (Eli Goree) tapes of them throughout the summer. Jessie tells Alex (Ronen Rubinstein) and Garrett (Alberto Frezza) that she misses Joel, only to get interrupted by the camera that recorded more than expected. Garrett tells Jessie that she needs to turn in her mom in order to have a future. That’s when Amy comes out talking about how the camp is her home. Garrett is still not sure that it is over, growing more suspicious with the way Amy acts around the cylinder he had in his trunk.

As they are driving away from camp, Garrett’s car breaks down. He can’t figure out what’s going on, saying it doesn’t make sense for his car to just stop working. Amy brings up Holyoke being smarter than she thought, which makes the group realize that something is off. That’s confirmed when Amy tells Jessie that Holyoke left a piece of his soul in her. She can’t leave without killing that last piece, which she plans to do by killing Jessie who can’t leave either. Garrett says that Amy will have to go through them, something that Amy takes as a challenge when she reveals the zombie versions of Joel and Cricket (Amber Coney) ready to help her.

Suddenly it’s day again, with Garrett walking to the lake towards his dad who seems to be alive. His father tells him that nothing happens by accident and then disappears, leaving Garrett alone at the lake. It looks like it was a dream, with him waking up the day before the counselors were meant to arrive at Camp Stillwater. He shares his dream with the Sheriff, who blows it off by saying it must be nothing.

In present day Jessie, Garrett and Alex run back into the cabin, locking themselves inside. Some blood drips on Alex, which opens their eyes to Deb and the dead girls’ bodies that Amy hid. Possessed Amy chooses that time to crash through the window to attack the pair.

Meanwhile, Blair (Mark Indelicato) and Drew (Zelda Williams) are at the bus station thinking it’s over. Unfortunately, Anton clues them in that they need to go back and help their friends.

The group is running through the woods trying to escape Amy, with Garrett slowing down because he got stabbed in the stomach by some broken glass. He tells Jessie to leave him because she needs to stay alive or else everyone dies. Garrett promises that he will meet with them again, with Jessie getting in a kiss on their bench before running off to avoid Amy. Garrett takes out his gun and shoots at Amy, but without us knowing what happens to either of them.

Flashback to Cricket visiting Blair where we see him washing off an insult that someone wrote on his car. Cricket promises Blair that camp will change their lives, with them planning to road trip afterwards, too. They talk about always being in each other’s lives. In the present, Blair can’t reach the camp so they have no choice but to call the police.

Alex and Jessie decide that they need to get back to the cabin to get the pure water again, but before they can they hear someone whispering Jessie’s voice. They end up near the volleyball court where Blotter’s (Zachary Gordon) head tells her she will die. Amy uses the intercom to tell Jessie that they will find her, with Blotter’s head laughing at them.

The police show up at the camp ground, one of the officers (Nathan Witte) sees Amy crying further down the road. He asks if she is okay, only for her to answer that they are all dead. The officer tries to help, but we see Amy looking at the gun in his holster with a smile.

Alex and Jessie find the pure water, but it quickly becomes tainted. Jessie figures out that Amy lead them there on purpose. At that moment, Amy uses the intercom to lure them back by claiming she is the police. When they return to the lake they see that it’s filled with blood, just like the pure water in the cabin and the police officers that arrived are all dead there.

Flashback to Alex walking into his room where we see his mother discovering his stolen clothes. They talk about how his father was weak, something that his mother doesn’t want to hear and calls him weak instead for acting this way.

Alex and Jessie are stuck in the woods with Amy and all the dead bodies ready to attack. Alex tells Jessie to go, sacrificing himself so she can figure out a way to stop them. Amy taunts Alex before she kills him with an ax to the chest. She tells the others that two are down, with one being left to kill off.

Flashback to Jessie packing up for camp, taking some of her mother’s clothes. Her mother isn’t happy, but Jessie doesn’t care because she has nothing to lose now. She changes clothes and leaves for camp with her mother’s boyfriend.

At the camp, Jessie is in the showers trying to escape Amy which doesn’t exactly work out. Amy can’t seem to find Jessie in any of the showers, but she is closer and closer to her hiding spot in one of the stalls. A sound outside makes Amy think that she left, which gives Jessie a little time to head off in the other direction. Jessie finds Garrett, Blair and Drew in the woods who are there to help. She tells them that she has a plan to play a game with Amy.

The group confuses Amy, with them creating a circle around her that they seal with pure water from their own cabin. This gets Amy caught in a cage of her own while the others stand around her, able to get free while she is trapped.

Meanwhile Garrett goes to find the cylinder, which he plans to play for Amy through the walkie talkies that he shares with Jessie. The cylinders end up not working because Amy found a way to it first. Joel, Deb, Blotter and Cricket’s dead bodies show up at the cabin ready to save Amy and that ends up putting the group in danger.

When Garrett hears Jessie talking to Joel, he remembers his camera that was left by accident. On it is a recording of Holyoke playing the piano, which causes all the dead bodies and Amy to collapse in pain. They are almost in the clear when Amy gets a hold of Jessie in the last second, which doesn’t stop Jessie from getting an ax and killing Amy – a direct hit to the head. All the spirits, good and bad, are collected and disappear back into the lake.

The next morning the remaining group sees the dead bodies of their friends heading into the lake.

Jessie and Garrett are walking through the woods talking about how they saved everyone when he tells her that he can’t go with her. It turns out that Garrett did die the night before, but when Jessie kissed him she got his spirit to come to her to help get rid of Amy. They kiss goodbye before Jessie heads back to Blair and Drew.

Back at camp, the spirit of Garrett heads back to the lake where he is reunited with his father as the new protector, taking over Holyoke’s position.

Jessie ends up going to college that September. She gets a postcard from Blair and Drew who ended up in Seattle, taking the road trip that Blair planned with Cricket. On her desk sits a picture of all of them at camp, except for Amy.

Back at camp, we see the point of view of Malphus again as he takes a look at the for sale camp grounds, hinting that it’s not yet over.
