Interviews

Eric André – The Eric André Show

By  |

Q) It’s now Season 3 of “The Eric Andre Show.” What’s going to be new?

A) We have the cops called on us the most times this year and I almost got beat up the most times this year. Also, we had guests walk off during interviews. To me, that’s a good season.

Q) The set continues to get trashed each episode. Will this year be any different?

A) We will continue trashing it. We demolished it.

Q) Who are some of the guests this season that you can tease?

A) We have real Seth Rogen, fake Reese Witherspoon, real Lauren Conrad, real Nick Cannon, real Chris Rock, real Jimmy Kimmel, real Tyler The Creator and fake George Clooney. We have real Andy Samberg. We have a lot of good guests this year.

Q) What makes Adult Swim such a perfect fit for your show?

A) Adult Swim is the best. They let me do whatever I want, total creative freedom. They are very nurturing and they give great advice. Mike Lazzo, who is President of the network, is like a mentor to me. He created “Space Ghost,” which is one of my favorite shows of all time. He is just a great coach, really supportive and a nurturing creative father figure to me. They are fantastic. I couldn’t ask for a better network.

Q) You have great comedic timing! Is it something that has always been natural for you or have you worked to hone it?

A) It’s just blind luck. I just freestyle a lot.

Q) Who are some of your dream guest stars for the show?

A) I want the real Russell Brand and real George Clooney to be interviewed with the fake Russell Brand and fake George Clooney.

Q) You and Hannibal Buress seem to have a great friendship. How do you continue to maintain that after all the high jinks that goes on with the show?

A) Hannibal is my brother from another mother. He’s been my friend for almost a decade and we are both weirdos. So, we have a bond and a kinship because we are both lunatics in our own way.

Q) Your IMDB page says you are known for your work on “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23” and The Internship. What would you prefer to be known for?

A) My show! I’ve got my own show with my name on it! They are still like, “You might known him from The Invention of Lying.” I had two lines in the movie, which came out seven years ago! Give me a break! I want to be known for my show. I have to stick up for my show!

Q) Many fans actually know you also from your work on “2 Broke Girls.” What was it like working on the show?

A) They were very sweet to me over there, too. They were very nurturing and it was a healthy, positive working environment. Writer Michael Patrick King really took me under his wing. This is a guy who has decades of experience and tons of success in comedy. He started writing with John Stewart in the early 90’s and now he has just skyrocketed to the top. He really took me under his wing and was very kind to have me on his show. I had a fun time on the show. I don’t get to do a lot of that stuff. So, I really felt fortunate to be a part of it.

Q) Are there any other recent projects that you are working on?

A) I’m doing a new show for the FXX network called “Man Seeking Woman” with Jay Baruchel. It’s created by Simon Rich who is an “SNL” writer and it’s really funny. It’s got a Secret Life of Walter Mitty vibe where it starts out grounded in reality and then goes off into this hyperbolic fantasy world. For instance, there is an instance where Jay (who plays the lead Josh) gets his heart broken and I tell him, “I heard your girlfriend is dating someone new.” And he’s like, “Dating someone new?!” And I say, “Yeah, she’s dating a guy named Adolph.” And he’s like, “Adolph Hitler?” And I’m like, “Yeah!” Jay’s like, “Didn’t he die?! Wasn’t he a pretty terrible dictator?” And I’m like, “Actually, he’s a pretty cool guy once you would like to know him.” Then, we go to a party and Adolph Hitler is like the life of the party and Josh ends up hating his life. It’s really funny!

Q) How do you choose the projects you will be a part of?

A) It’s case by case. That one I just auditioned for because I read the script and I loved it. I put myself on tape and auditioned a couple of times and booked it.

Q) What do you think it is about “The Eric Andre Show” that makes it such a fan favorite program?

A) I think we keep the pranks and interviews high stakes. People feel the reality of the situation of almost getting beat up and almost getting arrested each episode makes it exciting for people to watch.

Q) Is there anything else you want fans to know about this season of “The Eric Andre Show?

A) I straighten my hair for the entire season like Katt Williams. I chemically straightened my hair. All the penises you see on the show are absolutely real. In the flesh. We’re so bummed out that we have to blur them for broadcast, but I just want the viewers to know that all the dicks you see on the show were out in the open. A lot of penises this year!

Q) You have a lot of fans on Twitter. So, what is it about the negative comments that makes you want to retweet them?

A) I just think it’s funnier if you retweet the hatred than the love. I also want people to see what I deal with on a daily basis, people just shitting on me constantly.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is actually a fan and supporter of you and your comedy?

A) I would say thank you!
