Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) I’d like to describe my sound as a deja vu form of a sedative. Something you have vivid memories from but can’t exactly put your finger on what the actual memory is from. All you feel is that the past is the best place to drift off into nothingness in.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) Nina Simone, Free Nationals, Ramsey and Brent Faiyaz are what I’m listening to currently.

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Melt into Honey.”

A) I wrote “Melt into Honey” about indulging in your dark feminine energy. I’m constantly evolving, and it was something I wrote while being inspired by the divine feminine and all the workings of femininity.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) I think they like the slowness to my songs. My producer and I have laughed about how if people had the same bpm in their heart rate as the tempo in my songs, their heart would stop. It’s been my signature sound along with my lyrics, at least that’s what people have said, and I’m honored.

Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?

A) I did some edits inspired by spring and its creeping seduction. How spring can parallel feminine energy in a way. The video edits of a dripping rose, a bee’s honey from the nectar of a flower that’s growing in Spring, I don’t think it’s a coincidence. It plays into the hypnosis of the changing seasons.

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) It’s always different. Although, I usually come up with my melodies first and then I write lyrics that incapsulate the song’s atmosphere in my head. I have to be very relaxed and not stressed while writing. Otherwise, I have a hard time working out my ideas.

Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) I’m involved with every session of my music along with my producer, Kris Muhly. He is the best and I usually don’t trust anyone else with the production but Kris.

Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?

A) Of course! I’m writing the album’s themes and stories that come along with it. There are themes sonically and visually. It’s a steady process and I don’t want to rush it.

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) I haven’t performed as of recently because I can be somewhat shy and I mainly just like writing music in my own sanctuary. But I honestly have been planning on performing some intimate performances for small audiences and creating my own set-up.

Q) What are some Gaby Paul songs that tend to be your favorites to perform at concerts?

A) I love singing “Untruly.” I sing it differently every time and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of doing numerous renditions of it.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) I’m loving Father John Misty’s jazz album, so I think a crooner song would slap. Some of the things I’ve read about Josh Tillman seem to align with experiences I’ve been through. Obviously, I’d love to do some sampling vocals for Kid Cudi. I’ve been a fan of him since I was like fifteen years old.

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) I think social media helps me express myself not only visually, but also musically by connecting with other artists as well. Even though I do consider deleting it often.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) That I love you and y’all truly get it.
