“Don’t be scared. I have no idea how many times I’ve said it. The intern stands over the patient with a scalpel, a needle or a clamp afraid to make the first move.” – Meredith

Thorpe walks Meredith to her front door and the two exchange some awkward remarks about what number date they officially are on. Thorpe (Scott Elrod) attempts to step back, but our beloved Meredith seems to change her mind and invites him in.

We watch Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) sneak by Owen (Kevin McKidd) in the ER. We see Callie (Sara Ramirez) in bed with Penny (Samantha Sloyan). The two are ready to catch some z’s when Penny lets it slip that she loves Callie, who replies with “Thank you.” Awkward City. DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) is sneaking out of Maggie’s room in the morning when she awakes. He claims to have a big procedure that day and agrees to text her later, almost leaving without remember to smooch his sweetie. Moments later, Maggie is interrupted by a hollering Meredith who is yelling “Get out! Go! Get out!” Maggie (Kelly McCreary) finds Thorpe in the hallway who can’t explain what upset Meredith. Maggie asks why is there and begins slapping him. Trying to explain himself, Amelia shows up and her and Maggie team up to yell at Thorpe to leave.

Down in the ER, we find Hunt, Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) and Warren (Jason George) waiting on an ambulance. A young woman arrives with a hip displacement thanks to attempt at love making with her rather large romantic interest.

Avery (Jesse Williams) finds Webber (James Pickens, Jr.) who notes that his wife – Jackson’s mother – is in town. He lets Jackson know that he is looking forward to seeing her and that if Jackson isn’t, that’s his problem. When she arrives, Mama Avery-Webber (Debbie Allen) wants to check on April (Sarah Drew), but Jackson is adamant that she not step anywhere near her.

At Meredith’s’ house we find her in full maid mode. She won’t say anything that isn’t related to a cleaning supply and how it can be used. Maggie attempts to distract her by discussing Amelia’s love life, but Meredith is too focused at the task at hand – avoiding dealing with the real world.

A little girl comes into the ER with a head wound and we learn that it is Callie and Arizona’s daughter Sophia. Penny puts her at ease and takes on fixing her right up.

More on Meredith’s situation, we find Amelia and Maggie making small talk over in the family. She noticed that DeLuca left in a hurry. Maggie says she is waiting for a text and Amelia says that Owen won’t stop texting and calling, but she doesn’t know what she should do. Another attempt at mixing Meredith into the conversation gets deflected when she notices a stain on the rug.

Kepner tells Riggs (Martin Henderson) that she is avoiding Jackson’s mother. Edwards, Warren, Hunt and Callie chit chat during the CT of the woman with the hip injury. They are discussing how different dog sizes are able to breed when Callie notices that the woman needs to be rushed to an operating room since one leg isn’t getting blood to it. During the operation, Callie gets a call from the ER saying that her daughter is there with a head wound so she leaves the operation in the others’ hands.

Post surgery with Riggs, Kepner is hiding in the lounge when she is discovered by Jackson’s mother. The two have a frank discussion about April’s fears and bond over the fact that Mama Avery-Webber once had a miscarriage herself. They chatter about how to bounce back from it and April seems to finally find the strength to open up about learning she was pregnant and why she wanted to go it alone.

Callie finds Penny in the ER who wants to know why she was the one to handle Sophia’s injury. Callie wished she had gotten a page beforehand, but it seems that the real issue is that Sophia doesn’t know who Penny is within her life. The “I love you” seems to have made things weird, but Callie says the real concern is that Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) isn’t comfortable with her meeting their daughter.

While repairing the vacuum, it seems that Meredith is finally back to speaking. Amelia talks about finding Owen drunk in his trailer and that she isn’t ready for communication with him yet. Karev (Justin Chambers) interrupts to find out what happened with Thorpe and is ready to pull some punches. He doesn’t understand how he was called out from service when Meredith seems to only want his help with the vacuum.

Penny finds Arizona and apologizes for interacting with Sophia because she didn’t know that it would have caused such a problem. Clearly unaware of what is going on, Arizona needs some clarification. When Penny explains about the injury and that Callie said it was unwise to treat their daughter because of Arizona’s issue, she finally understands. Arizona tells Penny that she never even had a discussion with Callie about her and that the subject has never even come up. A shocked Penny just stands there wondering why Callie would have lied to her.

Karev confesses that DeLuca’s procedure was actually cancelled, which sends Maggie into a tailspin. Maggie heads to the hospital to confront her beau about his bad business. Arizona finds Callie who tells her to leave her out of her Penny problems. Edwards gets a page and Hunt is eager to find out if it is Amelia, but is assured that his message was passed along. Warren tells a story about an issue between he and Miranda where he had to explain that he would never intentionally hurt her or their son. Warren says that it just takes time and a lot of apologizing to move on from these things.

Maggie finds DeLuca and wants a word. She confronts him about avoiding her and wants him to lay it on the line. His lack of ability to speak up shows her the sign she needed that things are over. She can’t understand why he wanted to go out in the open with them and only after a few weeks he’s unable to handle it.

Meredith is cleaning out a closet when she finds a former blanket belonging to Derek. This is the snap she needed to get her back to reality and end the cleaning.

Kepner tracks down Jackson to say she enjoyed the conversations he had with her mother. He is angry that his mother meddled after asking her not to, but Aprils says that thanks to their chat she’d actually like to meet with him to have a chat.

Penny meets back up with Callie who apologizes for lying. Penny says that if they aren’t on the same page to let her know and that she shouldn’t have lied or made her feel like crap over it.

In front of a fire, Meredith tells Karev that her night with Thorpe was good. She freaked out because it was kind of incredible. Waking up to find him in her room, it was too much. She laments that everyone thought she was ready so she figured she’d just do it and get it out of the way, but it turns out it wasn’t the right time afterall.

Own shows up to apologize to Amelia in person. He says he has no excuse for his behavior and that he is really sorry. She understands, but because she just got sober again it was unfair to be put in that position. He assures her that it won’t happen again, which she can appreciate, but since she can’t count on her sobriety just yet it isn’t the right time for them to be involved.

Large lover man is so happy that his sweetheart is going to make a full recovery. He was such a great guy by waiting around all day for her, but when she moves her hand away from him he realizes things between them are over.

Bailey and Callie talk about the incident with Sophia. After a great pep talk involving a sports metaphor, Bailey wants to know who Callie can picture screaming in the stands next to her as they watch Sophia conquer the soccer world.

At Meredith’s, the group comes back together to recap the events of the day. Maggie shares that DeLuca is no longer an issue and Amelia shares that Hunt is in that same ship. Thorpe arrives to check on Meredith, but Alex would rather he leave. Meredith lets him know that it is actually okay and finally shares with him what caused her to freakout.

Callie and Sophia stand outside the hospital where they spot Penny. Callie introduces Penny to her daughter and invites her out for ice cream with them. She also assures her that they are in the same place, romantically.

Jackson’s mom finds him before heading out to dinner with her husband. Jackson is angry that she spoke to April without his permission, but he actually thanks her for her help because it turned out that April wants to talk. His mother agrees that it was good because she got everything out of April that they would need, legally, to go after her.

Meredith tells Thorpe that she lost her husband and that he was the first man she was with since then. She says it would be easier if things hadn’t been so great, but she isn’t ready for a relationship. Thorpe is understanding and agrees to back off – for a little while. He says so she’ll be prepared he’ll call her again and if she ignores him again he will show up once again. He tells her that he’ll be waiting because he’s pretty sure she is worth waiting for.

“Don’t stop, Don’t hesitate. You can’t be scared of what is next. Do not let fear get in your way.” – Meredith
