After Leah Murphy’s (Tessa Ferrer) surprise reappearance Catherine Avery (Debbie Allen) says there is a flaw in the residency program that has to be fixed. This week begins with Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Catherine discussing a consultant that is being brought in to evaluate the residency program. Bailey wants assurance though that this is the right call.

Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) arrive at the hospital bickering over gas for the car. Alex gives her guilt over not discussing with Owen about putting the baby issue on the backburner. Maggie (Kelly McCreary) shows up to interrupt and enlighten them about the consultant coming into observe. Alex (Justin Chambers) thinks they are overhauling the program because he beat up DeLuca (Giacomo Giannotti). The residents are in a panic thinking it is because the residents often hook up with doctors. They also make Warren (Jason George) feel guilty over his hallway trauma surgery that got him into hot water with his wife. Webber (James Pickens, Jr.) is surprised that he wasn’t consulted about bringing in this new doctor and Bailey tries to calm his nerves by saying that she is coming to help overhaul to see if they can be doing something better.

Dr. Minnick (Marika Dominczyk), the consultant, meets with the residents to seek information about the attendings. She wants information about who they love and who they hate, but Jo (Camilla Luddington) explains that this would disrupt any future work with doctors. Dr. Minnick wants them to though to start questioning the doctors’ procedures to be sure they are learning the most they can during them.

Webber meets with a patient who needs surgery for her gallbladder. She is in a bowling league and her friend is eager to get her back knocking pins down right away. Outside the room, Webber wants DeLuca to spill on how the meeting with Minnick went, but is told that it was confidential.

Owen is busy treating a patient when Amelia mentions needing to get some spine films. Owen isn’t interested in letting her in though. He is still pretty pissed from this morning’s gas discussion. Meanwhile, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is operating on a patient when Minnick interrupts to watch. She wants Warren to take a more active role in letting her residents do procedures. She thinks residents with more hands on experience can help save more lives. Meredith comes out post-surgery to yell at Webber to get this gal out of their hair.

Maggie finds a list in the room that Minnick left behind when she was meeting with her residents. She is annoyed that her name is low on the list and Arizona is pissed because her name isn’t even on it. April (Sarah Drew) stops Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) for help on turning the sound off on the Tinder app and awkwardly runs into Jackson.

Maggie and Webber watch as the elderly bowling patient walks on a treadmill to test her heart to see if she is healthy enough for surgery. She begins to have trouble breathing and was taken off the treadmill. Webber thinks the elderly woman might have had a small heartattack so they want to do surgery to fix her ticker. The patient’s friend is pushing for the surgery so she can get back up and bowling. Maggie steps out to introduce herself to Dr. Minnick. Webber sees them interacting and speaks to Bailey about her interrupting surgeries and her frosty personality. Bailey believes that Minnick needs to see how open the doctors are before she can decide if she wants to stick around. Webber thinks Bailey wants Minnick to have his job, which she denies. He doesn’t understand why he needs to revamp the residency program and Bailey states that it is because medicine is changing so they should all be able to change with it.

Owen asks Amelia if she is ready to leave for the day and she wants to sleep over at the hospital. She says that if she went first on her surgery she wouldn’t have had to stay, but Owen says the patient would have also died.

Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) is paranoid about not seeing her name on Minnick’s name. Alex says the only person that shouldn’t be on the list is him based on his incident with DeLuca.

April gets dressed up and is ready to head out on a date with a guy from Tinder. Jackson is surprised she is on the app and wonders how she found out about it. She says she knows he is on it too because she saw his photo on there, but he shouldn’t be worried because she swiped left.

At home, Bailey and Warren are talking about their day. Warren assumes she wants to know what the residents are thinking about Minnick, but she really just wants to know that she is doing the right thing by bringing in this consultant.

The next day Owen and Amelia are arguing again over the same patient. Dr. Minnick comes in to observe and during their argument the two actually come up with a good idea of how to operate simultaneously on the patient. Minnick suggests that Hunt not assist on the surgery, but that Edwards do it.

In Maggie’s OR, she asking Murphy for an opinion on how she is doing as a teacher. While Murphy is explaining Maggie is too fast with her thoughts and ideas they realize that the elderly bowling patient needs a more detailed operation than before. Murphy runs out of the room in order to book a bigger one for the in depth procedure. Webber interrupts as Maggie, Murphy and Minnick are scrubbing in. Webber doesn’t want Murphy to do any part of the procedure, but Minnick asserts that they are a teaching hospital so this is their chance to learn.

Jackson and April have a heart to heart about her date. Jackson wants them to keep it under wraps that they are dating. April says he doesn’t have to worry because she has no idea what she is doing because during her date she faked a page so she could leave. Jackson assures her that she will be fine because all she has to do is “dip her toe” and then she will get the hang of it.

Back in the OR with Maggie, Murphy, Minnick and Webber they are operating away. Minnick wants DeLuca to step in to help on the procedure, but Webber is adamant that he not get involved because he is a first year intern who hasn’t even removed a tonsil. Minnick is showing him the heart when she nicks a vessel – on purpose! DeLuca fixes it and when we look over at Webber he is seething! He wants Minnick to leave the hospital. She thinks they should do what parents used to do with their children – throw the kid in the pool and they will either sink or swim. Minnick says that the patient wasn’t in any danger because the more qualified doctors were nearby and the doctors would learn more and faster that way.

Maggie meets with Webber to assure him the patient is fine. Maggie thinks Minnick is right – she is a great doctor but a terrible teacher. The patient’s friend is worried that they think she pushed her pal for the surgery for some dumb tournament. She explains that it is more about getting them out of their homes and that sometimes they all just “need a little push.”

Amelia and Owen are walking out of the hospital together and she thinks he is mad that she let Edwards assist over him. He explains that he is angry because she has slept at the hospital for the last two weeks and through their argument she confesses she doesn’t want to have a baby afterall.

Minnick is headed to meet with Bailey and asks Robbins for directions. Arizona confesses she is annoyed she was left off of the list earlier and Minnick has no clue what she is talking about. It turns out that it wasn’t a rank of doctors, but she wrote their names down to remember them better. She says “Arizona Robbins” isn’t really a name you forget so she wasn’t written down.

At their home, Jackson is sitting on the couch getting ready to snack on some nachos. April wants in, but when she gets a reminder that she was to have a drink with the guy from last night (to makeup for her bailing) Jackson encourages her to go. He truly wants her to dip her toe…

Amelia shows up at Meredith’s house and wants to spend the night. Alex is opposed because he now lives in her old room and he explains that Amelia needs to talk to Owen to “fall on her sword” about not wanting a baby. Amelia states that she fell on her sword and, thus, she needs to spend the night. Alex says to take his room.

Bailey and Minnick meet up to go over her first day at the hospital. Minnick says that if she comes to their hospital that she would shake things up. She has a few other offers to field before deciding and she also wants to let Bailey know that she is about to become the bad guy. She has seen it happen plenty of times before so Bailey needs to get ready to be seen as the bad guy for bringing her in. Minnick says she won’t share the job with Webber either. She wants to be the only one with the authority. Webber interrupts when Minnick is headed out. He explains that he finally understands that Bailey just wants to bring him along as medicine changes. He knows that everyone needs a push and that Minnick pushes him. He knows they will make a good team.
