How to Get Away with Murder – Are You The Mole?

By  |

We open on our students Michaela (Aja Naomi King), Asher (Matt McGorry), Connor (Jack Falahee) and Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) all seemingly very inebriated. Michaela is all pissy and annoyed about something and an unknown number won’t stop calling her. Finally, when this unknown number FaceTimes her, she feels the need to answer. She is shocked, along with the rest of the gang, to find out that it is actually Laurel (Karla Souza). Laurel along with baby Christopher are FaceTiming just to let them know that they’re safe, Laurel is not the mole and that they should turn on the news.

The next thing you know it is 24-hours earlier and the students get called into Annalise’s (Viola Davis) classroom for one last time. It turns out she called them all there for one final speech before graduation. She warns them to not become the person that she is and that all of her students are better than that. All of our gang immediately suspects that something is up because why would Annalise be this nice on her own volition. Little do they know that this was just a genuine act of kindness and reverence for the students and it didn’t seem to have any ulterior motive behind it.

As they return home Oliver is waiting there with a gift for each of them. It seems that he is gifting them Shrooms (or as he notes/calls them Psilocybin mushrooms) to help them heal past emotional wounds from the past three years. They end up taking them.

Bonnie (Liza Weil) is finally out of the hospital and not returning any of Frank’s (Charlie Weber) calls or texts because she can’t get over what Frank and Annalise have kept from her these past few months about Miller. Frank is distressed and goes to bother Annalise while she gets ready for the dean’s graduation party. Frank clocks a suitcase fully packed in the corner of the room and asks where she is going. Annalise tells him that after graduation she is going to see her mom and be with her for a while since she is very ill.

Speaking of Bonnie, you know who is trying to talk to Nate (Billy Brown). He doesn’t have the time to talk though because he is in a meeting with Teagan (Amariah Vann) signing off on some paperwork from the trial. Teagan tries to convince him to reach out to Annalise so that he can hear her side as to why she lied to him, but Nate doesn’t want to listen. Instead, he pokes at Teagan and tells her not to let Annalise get under her skin and to “watch her back.”

Oliver is completely stoned because he is a “lightweight” (according to Connor), meanwhile the high hasn’t kicked in for either Connor nor Michaela. But that will soon change since the local news announces that the FBI is closing in on Annalise.

Annalise is at the dean’s party thwarting off her fellow faculty members and using her date, Teagan, to help. One of the faculty members wonder if C&G is why Annalise hasn’t signed an extension on her teaching contact with Middleton for the upcoming semester, but Teagan doesn’t even know the answer to that because she has made no mention of going full time at C&G. Annalise feeds her the same line about her mother that she fed Frank. The night seems like all fun and games until the people at the party check their phones to see what the news is reporting.

Just then we see Bonnie, Nate and Gabriel (Rome Flynn) watching what the news is reporting. The FBI has opened up a few murder cases that they believe are linked to Annalise, the main one being the death of Sam which is being linked to a plan called “operation bonfire.” Annalise, of course, freaks out upon seeing the news and runs away from the party with Teagan. On the way to find her car they walk past the old house/office and Annalise tells Teagan that she never even got any insurance money because it’s tied up in court due to Hannah, Sam sister. Teagan suggests that Hannah might be the mole. With other theories such as the mole being made up by the FBI to scare Annalise into a confession and that all of this is because of an Xavier- governor team up with the FBI.

Our gang calls on the only two people they can think of – Bonnie and Frank. Names get thrown around about who could be the mole, including Gabriel and anyone of our main group. Asher seems to insist that Laurel is the mole. All of this just triggers Michaela’s high. As Bonnie and Frank leave we see Frank tries to make things right with her, but she insists that he just needs to find out what he can on Gabriel. The same Gabriel who is with the FBI after hearing the news.

Annalise is trying to use her VIP Results contact to start the process when a knock at the door happens. Nate is there and he just happens to have with him all of the Denver files that he were supposed to be destroyed a while ago. But he brings them by and tells Annalise to her face that he wants to see her go down.

Michaela comes up with the bright idea for the gang to go out and party/stay out for the rest of the night until the graduation ceremony in the next morning so that they can work off their high and be ready for the day. It is just then that the high hits Connor. Three people down and one more to go. Asher is none too happy about this plan and requests to speak to Micheala alone but she brushes him off.

Gabriel arrives back to his apartment only to be surprised by Frank who is already there and ready to threaten him just in case he has them all. Frank lets it slip that Sam had to die because he was not a good person and he was the one who killed Lila. Frank knocks Gabriel‘s phone out of his hand and holds him up against the wall choking him and telling him what he did to Sam because he hated him, but perhaps killing Gabriel would be the next best thing.

Asher brings the gang to a convenience store to load up on orange juice and sugar since he read on the internet that it would be the fastest way to speed up the high. He finally gets a chance to pull Michaela aside so that he can ask her if she would marry him so that they would have spousal immunity just in case anything happens with this whole Annalise situation.

Bonnie goes to visit Nate to ask him if he’s the mole. He says that he’s not. They have a very poignant conversation about the fact that Annalise has never killed anyone, but she and Nate have. Nate tries to convince her that the only reason why she feels this way is because Annalise has brainwashed her into thinking that without her she is alone. However, Bonnie suggests that she doesn’t feel alone and if anyone in their group should it would be neat because he is the only one who is truly alone.

We go back to our graduates who are finally back at home and we catch up to what we previously saw and we learned that Laurel didn’t get kidnapped. She actually escaped and it was Teagan who helped her! The gang then discusses the call and Michaela comes to the conclusion that the mole isn’t Laurel or Gabriel or anyone else but that is Asher. She tells the group about how he’s been acting strange lately, not to mention that he’s the only one of them who isn’t high and about how he asked for her hand in marriage as a means to get spousal immunity. She asks him to finally come clean and tell them the truth. He confesses it’s true that he is the informant. He pleads with them and tells them that he never got anything to actually incriminate the students only Annalise. He then receives a hit on the back of the head from a fire poker. But who hit him?

Well, that would be Ollie. He finally has blood on his hands. That sobers him up real quick, but just when they think that Asher is dead he opens his eyes. He’s not dead! He explains to them the situation and the reason why he is the informant. It turns out that a few weeks ago the FBI approached him to be an informant and threatened that if he didn’t then they were going to throw his mother and sister in jail for willingly knowing about his father’s criminal activity. Michaela is quite upset because she feels like for the past month everything that’s been going on between the two of them is a lie. Asher promises that that’s not true and reveals that the only thing that he did for the FBI was press record on his phone sometimes. That’s the reason why he brought up Sam during the restorative justice case and the reason why he kissed Michaela recently so that he could stop her from incriminating herself. He explains to them that the FBI doesn’t want them, they want Annalise. All of the deaths that have happened that the FBI are investigating including Sam, Sinclairand Miller are all “caused “by Annalise in one way or another. The FBI told Asher that Annalise was the one who released the corruption papers to the attorney general that made his father kill himself and whether or not it’s true it’s what the FBI believes. He tries to convince them to go to the FBI right now and ask for the same deal that he received. He tells them that they will get the deal because at the end of the day this is all about who has “the best story“ and the gang has the best story. He says that they were all “manipulated“ by their law professor into covering up these crimes or at least that’s the story that the FBI is trying to tell.

At that moment Annalise is burning the Denver files and leaves a voicemail for her mother stating that she won’t be able to make it to visit and that she’s really sorry and that she loves her. As soon as she’s done burning the files she grabs her burner phone out of the safe and begins the process of wiping results. She shreds all the evidence, erases her hard drive and does everything that they tell her to do. She winds up in a private car on the way to a private airport. Although, on the way there she asked the driver to turn back and we never get to see what it is that she went back for. But next thing you know she’s on a private tiny plane using the name “Justine” and going somewhere.

And Michaela and Connor have a talk on the porch about whether or not it is a good idea to go to the FBI. Michaela insists that she’s not making this decision while high on shrooms and fully intends to go to the graduation ceremony in a few hours. They run back inside at the screams of Oliver calling out Asher’s name because he has decided to run. We, of course, know where he ran to – Bonnie’s house. As soon as Bonnie gets the chance she calls Frank over so that he can help with situation.

The FBI burst into our students house and arrests Connor and Michaela for murder. We then get to the reveal of the dead body in Gabriel and Asher’s hallway only to see that it is in fact Asher! It seems that somehow in between going to Bonnie’s and being found dead he got murdered. At this point it is unclear as to whether Frank is the culprit, Bonnie or even Gabriel (who we briefly saw was alive and received an unexpected visitor that we were not privy to).

And finally we are left with the flash forward that we saw at the beginning of our season of Annalise’s funeral. The pastor wants to bring up someone who has known Annalise for a very long time and that someone is none other than… WES GIBBINS (Alfred Enoch)!
