Jane and “Petra”

Jane (Gina Rodriguez) has almost left her grandmother’s house many times. Eighteen years ago, Xo (Andrea Navedo) moved in with a boyfriend and took Jane, but they quickly returned. Eleven years ago Xo and Alba (Ivonne Coll) were in a big fight and Alba nearly kicked Xo out, but Jane wrote a letter to resolve it all. Six years ago, Jane left to go to college, but decided to be a commuter student. But, as our narrator (Anthony Mendez) tells us, one day Jane left for real. She and Michael (Brett Dier) are finally completely moved in to their new home with Mateo and they get some sexy times in after talking about redecorating their new home.

“Petra” (Yael Grobglas) and Scott (still one of the grossest ships ever on “Jane The Virgin”) decide to turn the hotel around and make as much money as possible before taking Rafael (Justin Baldoni) down. Scott (Wes Armstrong) introduces “Flamingo Friday” to the wait staff and tells them that they will be working longer shifts on theme nights. The wait staff hates this and Lina (Diane Guerrero) encourages Jane to use her connections at the hotel to do something about it. Jane approaches “Petra,” assuming she is still mad about what Jane said before the wedding. Of course, Anezka (“Petra’s true identify) has no idea what she’s talking about, but somewhat convincingly plays along. She tells Jane that she’s never liked her and that the only thing they share is their children’s father. Jane obviously takes offense to this and walks out.

Later on, when Jane and Michael are imagining Mateo growing up in their house the manager of the property arrives to show it to a different couple. Apparently, there has been some sort of mistake and Jane and Michael haven’t been paying half of their rent. We know that Petra was covering it and it clearly stopped when Anezka paralyzed her, but Jane and Michael don’t know that. They try to figure out who was responsible, calling Rafael and Rogelio (Jaime Camil), but they get nowhere.

Jane learns that Lina and the rest of the servers are planning a walk out, unless Scott gives in to their many demands. Jane agrees to sign, but only if she can give Rafael a heads-up. Just then, Jane spots the realtor that she hasn’t been able to contact. After briefly running from her, he reveals that Petra was the one paying half of Jane’s rent. Jane immediately confronts “Petra,” who again somewhat convincingly plays along. In thanks, Jane invites her over for dinner and “Petra” adds Scott on to the guest list, only to make things worse.

After the meeting, Anezka visits real Petra in her room in the suite, only to find one of Magda’s (Priscilla Barnes) friends from prison (Dot-Marie Jones). Magda’s friend instructs her to finish her plan quickly: Anezka is to sell Petra’s hotel shares and get Magda a good lawyer. And she only has a limited time to do it.

At home, Jane and Michael try to cut their expenses down so that they can afford the doubled rent price. They still end up over $200 short, so they decide to ask Rogelio for the rest of the money.

“Petra” tells Rafael that she wants to sell her shares because of her budding relationship with Scott. He doesn’t fight her on it so she gives him 48 hours to come up with the funds to buy her out.

On a Mateo tradeoff, Rafael tells Jane he thinks something is off with “Petra.” He thinks Scott is blackmailing her and Jane promises to keep an eye out during their dinner. Before the fated dinner party, Jane and Michael spar over sticking to the budget. They are both guilty of cheating on certain items (takeout coffee for Michael and expensive wine for Jane), but agree to keep on budget from now on. “Petra” and Scott soon arrive and it’s horribly awkward. When Michael and Jane leave the room, Scott advises “Petra” to not sell her shares and warns her about the staff walk-out.

Separately, Scott offers to Jane that the hotel gives her the rest of the money for rent if Jane convinces the staff to not walk out. Jane refuses on principle. She won’t let her friends down. Soon after that, Jane asks “Petra” if Scott is blackmailing her. “Petra” is offended and she and Scott leave.

The next day, Michael confronts Jane. He found out that Mateo’s baby gym, which cost over $100 a month, was already being covered by Rafael. Jane admits that she padded the budget, just in case something was to happen. Michael is understandably upset and accuses Jane of not being financially responsible. Just then, Jane gets a text from Lina that the walk-out is cancelled because “Flamingo Friday” is going to yield big tips. Jane leaves for work without resolving anything with Michael.

Jane and Lina are setting up for Flamingo Night when Scott comes up to them. Jane tries to apologize for the dinner party, but Scott doesn’t accept. He also reveals that the walk-out ended because Lina took the bribe. Jane is obviously betrayed and doesn’t give Lina a chance to explain. During the Flamingo Party, Jane tries to make things right with “Petra.” Unfortunately, she walks up just as Madga’s friend is demanding she sell the shares. “Petra” gets angry and pushes Jane in the pool. Jane pulls her in and they start fighting. Lina and Scott jump in to pull the women off of each other.

Lina and Jane make up after Jane realizes Lina has her back and Lina apologizes. Lina also points out that Jane has Rogelio and Rafael to fall back on, but Lina really needed the money.

Later, Jane and Michael agree to move into a smaller place so that they don’t have to be stressed all the time. They decide to turn their housewarming party into a goodbye party.

Later, Rafael and “Petra” meet. Rafael needs more time to come up with the money to buy “Petra” out, but she threatens to find another buyer. Rafael counters that he must give her permission to sell the shares. She blackmails him into giving her permission by threatening to tell the cops he illegally covered up certain aspects of his father’s finances when he died.

As “Petra” is leaving the meeting, she is frightened by Jane in the hallway. Jane starts to put the pieces together and confesses to Rafael that she doesn’t think that Petra is Petra!

Xo and Alba

Xo is on the hunt for a new career. Alba encourages her to take it slow and not rush into things so of course Xo rushes into things and takes the first job offer she gets: a teller job at a bank. Alba thinks she will hate it, but is supportive anyways as she is encouraged by a vision of a young Jane. Alba brings her home care patient, Mrs. Cohen (Annie Korzen), to the Marbella because she misses Jane and she likes the gift shop.

So, Xo’s first day at the bank isn’t going so well. She is serving picky customers, her supervisor is much younger than her and it’s boring. She texts Jane later that day that she hates it, but she can’t bring herself to tell Alba because her mother is so proud of her.

The next day, Xo quits her job and visits the Marbella to see Jane. On her way out, she sees Alba at the gift shop again and Alba catches her. Xo lies and says she was on a break, but Alba insists on giving her a ride back to work. When they get to the bank, Alba has to go in and Xo is caught. She admits that she quit and Alba is shocked.

When they are back at home, Xo and Alba talk on the iconic porch swing. Alba was afraid to tell Xo how she feels because they were on such good terms and she didn’t want to go backwards. Xo assures Alba that they will never go backwards and also advises her to think about changing her own job, because she seems unhappy.

At Jane and Michael’s housewarming/goodbye party, Alba tells Jane and Xo that she quit working as a home care worker and started a job at the Marbella gift shop!

Rogelio and Rafael and Luisa

As always, Rogelio has a new scheme to break into the American market: he wants to be cast in a Hallmark movie based on a book by Amanda (Jane Seymour), Jane’s former writing group teacher. When he meets with her, Amanda spots Rafael and wants him as her date to a charity event. She implies that if Rogelio can make that happen, the part is his. When Rogelio first approaches him Rafael refuses, but he eventually agrees.

Luisa (Yara Martinez) is having a hard time dealing with losing Rose again and Rafael’s mother’s death so she invites herself to the charity event to distract herself. Rafael has a better idea: Rogelio keeps Luisa company while Rafael goes to the charity event. In an effort to help her, Rogelio shows Luisa one of his telenovelas and teaches her an acting technique. She ends up opening up to him and discovering that she drinks because she feels like a terrible sister and can’t be there for Rafael the way he has been there for him. They decide that she should go back to rehab, preventatively.

After the event, Amanda attempts to seduce Rafael, but he refuses to sleep with her. Rogelio didn’t end up getting the part, but his new friendship with Rafael gets him a meeting with another producer.

Mutter Investigation

The police update Rafael and tell him that his mother was poisoned by someone who had physical contact with her. Luisa is there during the update and tries to get Rafael to open up about the death of his mother. He insists that he’s fine.

Luisa left for rehab, but the police have eyes on her in case she contacts Rose again. Also, they inspected the Bible found with Mutter and found four underlined words: “angels guard the sun/son.”
