Jane The Virgin – Chapter Sixty-Three

By  |

By: Emily Cross

Young Jane (Lillianna Valenzuela) believed in the magic of fairy tales. But as time went on, Jane (Gina Rodriguez) exchanged that for a more realistic perspective. When reading a bedtime story to Mateo (Joseph Sanders), Jane swaps the “happily ever after” for a more realistic picture of life after falling in love. Once Mateo is asleep, she begs Xiomara (Andrea Navedo) and Rogelio (Jaime Camil) for wedding details. The theme is “fairy tale come to life.” Clearly, Rogelio does not share Jane’s realistic nature and has planned an extravagant wedding. Jane reminds Xo that it’s her day too and she should do what she wants. But Xo wants to feel like a princess on her wedding day and she deserves to so she officially asks Jane to be her maid of honor and Jane accepts. Jane is supportive, but seems surprised at how extravagant Xo is willing to go. Another surprise? The wedding is happening in two weeks, as Rogelio is a slave to the television schedule (a/k/a the “Jane the Virgin” finale is next week). Alba (Ivonne Coll) enters, wondering what role God will play in the wedding extravaganza. She wishes that they have a Catholic priest or at least someone spiritual to officiate (not Ricky Martin, like Rogelio wants). Jane gently reminds Alba that it’s Rogelio and Xo’s day and it’s their decision.

After Rogelio leaves to go to a night shoot, Jane ignores a call from Fabian (Francisco San Martin). Since their perfect fling, Fabian has gotten clingy and Jane feels they are no longer on the same page. She tells Xo that she will break up with him if she has to, but she hopes he gets the hint.

The next day, Jane is with Rafael (Justin Baldoni) when she gets a text from Fabian who is clearly not taking the hint. Rafael encourages Jane to end things soon, clearly frustrated over Petra’s silence about his love confession. It’s been a week and Rafael just wants things resolved. He asks Jane to nudge Petra towards being with him and Jane doesn’t want to get in the middle.

At the weekly brunch, the mood between Petra (Yael Grobglas) and Rafael is awkward. When Rafael takes the kids to clean up, Petra asks Jane for advice. Jane tells her that she has no opinion on the matter and Petra refuses to believe that’s true.

Later Jane tells Alba that, of course, she has an opinion: that it’s a horrible idea. It’s not even an opinion, it’s fact. Alba thinks she should express these feelings to Rafael and Petra, since they asked, and Jane is involved whether she wants to be or not. The doorbell rings and it’s Jean (Daniel Montgomery) and Luc (Matthew Scott Montgomery), Rogelio and Xo’s wedding planners. While they wait for Rogelio and Xo, Jane makes polite small talk including the theme of the wedding. Jean and Luc rudely point out that Xo is too old to pull off fairy tale. Jane tries to make sure they don’t make Xo feel bad about having a fairy tale wedding, but it is to no avail as they quit immediately.

Jane doesn’t tell Rogelio and Xo why Jean and Luc quit, but instead takes all the blame. After seeing Rogelio and Xo argue about hiring someone else, Jane offers to plan the wedding. Rogelio entrusts her with the binder. There’s no way this can go wrong!

Jane texts Rafael to ask him to pick up Mateo from his karate lesson. When Rafael tells Petra’s assistant Krishna (Shelly Bhalla) to add it to his calendar, she reminds him he has a doctor’s appointment. He at first wants to reschedule, but Petr (knowing it’s a checkup with the oncologist) pushes him to keep the appointment. Krishna also informs Rafael that Luisa called and will call back at 2:30 sharp. It must be 2:30, because Rafael rushes to take the call. Why is he rushing? Because the sketch the police showed him and Petra last week was of Eileen! He takes the call in a room with Dennis (Christopher Allen) and Dana (Sheila Carrasco) listening in. They need him to keep Luisa (Yara Martinez) on the line so that they can trace the call and Rose (Bridget Regan) needs Luisa to keep the call short for the same reason. The trace doesn’t work, but Dennis hopes that they will come back to town soon, which Rose tells Luisa is not a good idea anytime soon.

Meanwhile, Jane is doing a great job planning the wedding. Apparently white horses are hard to find on short notice, but Xo is set on it so Jane promises to find them. Petra knocks on the door, needing to talk to someone about the Rafael situation and knowing that Jane is her only real friend. She knows that she and Rafael bring out the worst in each other and she doesn’t want to mess up the good relationship they have going on right now with their kids. Jane tells her that makes a lot of sense.

When Jane visits Rogelio at the studio to confirm some wedding details, she tells him that she’s avoiding Fabian because she’s dreading ending things. Rogelio lets it slip that he left an invitation to the wedding in Fabian’s dressing room. Since Fabian hasn’t seen it yet, Jane sneaks in to get it before he does see it, but gets caught by Fabian! While trying to talk her way out of the situation, she sees a poster of Fabian riding a white horse. He still knows the horse trainer so she decides to use that connection for the wedding. In return, she gives him the invitation, despite not wanting to.

While Jane and Alba are prepping for the bachelor/bachelorette party Jane expresses guilt for using Fabian and tries to rationalize it, saying she is giving him another chance to impress her. But Alba sees through it and tells her it doesn’t change the fact that she’s using him.

On set, Fabian is down because his shirtless scene got cut and Rogelio assumes it is because Jane broke up with him. Rogelio doesn’t know he is actually spilling the beans.

Petra visits Rafael and finally tells him that she doesn’t want to try again. Rafael thinks she’s chickening out, but Petra stands strong telling him she talked it over with a friend.

Jane is on her way to pick up Mateo and tells Rogelio to not be late to a 2:00 meeting with a Unitarian minister (not Ricky Martin, but a strong backup). Fabian overhears this conversation and begins plotting. While Jane waits for Mateo, Rafael shows up knowing that Jane was the friend that Petra talked to. Jane defends herself saying she barely said anything to Petra and she doesn’t think it’s a good idea anyway. After Jane walks away, Rafael gets a call from his oncologist with his test results.

On set, Rogelio gets frustrated when Fabian continually forgets his lines. He finally gets Fabian to admit that Jane didn’t break up with him and is using him for his connections. Rogelio texts Xo that he is being held hostage and Xo isn’t happy. Someone else who’s been Fabian-ed? Jane, who was sent to an empty field under the guise that it was a stable for horses. On the phone with Xo, Jane insists that this whole conundrum is her fault and she is going to fix it.

Petra overhears Rafael on the phone, saying that his cancer is back. However, it’s all a trick to try to trap Luisa and Rose-as-Eileen, but Petra leaves before hearing that part. Luisa, for her part, is also tricked and tells Rose that she is going to see Rafael whether Rose comes or not.

Jane goes to the studio to talk to Fabian, in front of the whole crew. She apologizes for using him and asks him not to blame Rogelio. In his retort, Fabian calls Jane a heartless slut. Rogelio gets angry and it eventually leads to Fabian challenging Rogelio to a fight in the parking lot. Jane tries to separate them, but ends up in the middle of it! She tells Fabian that although they didn’t work out, the fact that he’s the first person she’s slept with since her husband died means something. He accepts her apology and he and Rogelio go to shake hands. However, Fabian clearly still holds some resentment because he goes in to punch Rogelio. Jane punches him first, shocked at her gut reaction. Rogelio and Fabian both declare they can’t work with the other anymore.

Petra runs into Rafael at the Marbella and confronts him about not telling her about his cancer. He tells her that it was a fake story for Luisa and she is relieved.

At the kid’s performance of Cinderella, Jane is a little jealous of Rafael and Petra’s seemingly perfect family. Later, Rafael apologizes for not respecting Jane’s opinion and promises to do so in the future.

Meanwhile, Rogelio and Fabian get a stern talking-to by the Telemasivo executive (Gloria Calderon Kellett) who informs them that they will work together, whether they like it or not.

Xo is upset to learn that Rogelio won’t make it to the bachelor/bachelorette party and tells him that she wants to plan the wedding with him, not for him. She arrives at the Marbella and tells Jane she’s calling it all off. Jane is disappointed at first, but then admits she’s not really feeling up to it because of her Rafael/Petra family jealousy. Xo points out that Jane is used to being in the center of everything and it’s hard being on the outside. The girls end up getting drunk together and Xo asks Jane why Jean and Luc quit. Jane tells Xo that she and Rogelio deserve their fairy tale ending after all they went through and Xo says Jane deserves the same. Someone knocks on the door: Jane forgot to cancel the stripper (Joe LoCicero)! The girls are drunk so why not let him stay?!

After the stripper leaves, Rogelio arrives! Apparently, Jane texted him because she thinks that Xo deserves to be prioritized. Rogelio will deal with the consequences at work later because Xo matters to him. It’s a fairy tale moment and Jane is so happy for her parents. They go outside to a (mini) horse drawn carriage and Rogelio gets a text that Ricky Martin will officiate their wedding. Everything is working out so well, for them.

For Jane, not so much. She drunkenly calls Rafael and tells him that she was subconsciously sabotaging his and Petra’s relationship because she was afraid of being left on the sidelines if it did work out. Rafael promises that will never happen. Of course, Petra then calls Jane to ask her to talk her down from her feelings for Rafael. In a sweet and comedic moment Jane switches between Rafael and Petra, encouraging them both to go for broke, because it’s so worth it to find the person that you love no matter the stakes. While Rafael and Petra reunite, Rogelio and Xo return to ask Jane to be the officiant at their wedding because she is at the center of their relationship and means more to them than Ricky Martin (just don’t tell Ricky Martin!).

But before we get to ever after, we have to catch our villain. Luisa and Rose-as-Eileen (Elisabeth Röhm) are back in Miami and Rose-as-Eileen is immediately arrested by Dennis. He takes off her mask and reveals her to be Rose.
