Jane The Virgin – Chapter Sixty

By: Emily Cross

When we begin, Xiomara (Andrea Navedo) is all up in Jane’s (Gina Rodriguez) business about her crush on Fabian. Jane denies it at first, but she eventually admits that she has a superficial crush. Xo encourages her to make a move, even if she’s just interested in a fling, which Jane most certainly is. But since Jane waited to be married to have sex, will she wait until she’s married again? Jane stops when Alba (Ivonne Coll) enters, but Alba makes clear that it’s Jane’s choice. It’s also hard for her to judge because she won’t tell Jorge that she won’t sleep with him because she’s nervous how he will react. Jane gives Alba a spoonful of her own medicine: if he won’t wait, he’s not worth waiting for.

Jane meets with Jeremy (Evan Todd), her editor, who tells her that her book is done! The next step is to set up a meeting with the marketing department to figure out how to market it to booksellers and audiences. Jane shares this with Rafael (Justin Baldoni) over the phone. He called because Luisa is coming in tomorrow and he needs Jane to keep Mateo until she leaves. They are obviously still being cautious around the ex-girlfriend of the woman who kidnapped Mateo.

Rafael meets with Elvis (Craig Lee Thomas), who has successfully bugged Luisa’s suite. If Rose tries to get in touch with Luisa, they will know. It turns out that Elvis is Raf’s private eye.

On the set of the telenovela, Rogelio (Jaime Camil) and Fabian (Francisco San Martin) film a scene. When the director calls cut, Fabian complains about maintaining his perfect body. Rogelio is not impressed. When a producer asks Rogelio if he wants a stunt double for an upcoming scene, he insists that he does his own stunts.

Rafael and Petra (Yael Grobglas) are taking photos of Anna and Ellie (Mia and Ella Allan) to celebrate them taking a test for the gifted and talented program when Chuck (Johnny Messner) shows up. The girls are obviously familiar with him and Rafael is surprised, given his and Petra’s “six-month rule.” When Rafael asks the girls who Chuck is,they tell him that he is “Mommy’s boyfriend.” Petra is annoyed when Dennis (Christopher Allen) and Dana (Sheila Carrasco) show up. She tells them that they already know everything she knows, but they know there are a couple of holes in her story.

On set, Jane tells Xo that she needs a 90-second elevator pitch for the marketing meeting as a snapshot to help sell the book. Xo encourages her to practice with Fabian, but Jane already has a plan. She eats a snack of Goji berries near Fabian and he takes notice because they are his favorite. A perfect in, courtesy of a deep dive Internet search.

Meanwhile, Rogelio is convinced that Fabian is sabotaging him. Xo thinks he might be overreacting, but gets distracted by Jane’s flirtation skills. Rogelio takes notice and is upset. When Xo points out how often Jane has visited set, Rogelio storms over and takes Jane away from Fabian. He confronts her about her crush and who should overhear but Fabian himself. Jane is upset that Fabian overheard their conversation. Rogelio is just concerned because he doesn’t want Jane to get her heart broken. She tells him that she’s an adult and she can handle things herself. Jane goes to Fabian’s trailer, and convinces him that Rogelio was just being overprotective. He buys it, probably because he’s not that bright. Still, Jane can’t stop ogling him.

At the Marbella, Alba is also distracted by Jorge (Alfonso DiLuca). Once his customers leave, Jorge starts kissing Alba and begs her to spend the night with him. Alba finally tells him that she doesn’t believe in sex without marriage. He seems disappointed so Alba takes her break.

Elsewhere, Dennis and Dana talk to Petra. They know she was lying about Anezka after tapping her computer. Petra tells them that she’s been sending Anezka money to keep her away and it has nothing to do with Scott. Still, they need to question Anezka so they need her back in Miami. If Petra doesn’t help them, they will charge her with obstructing a police investigation.

Speaking of criminal enterprises, Luisa (Yara Martinez) is back! She has her girlfriend Eileen (Elisabeth Röhm) in tow, who is actually Rose (Bridget Regan) in a mask. Luisa gives Rafael presents for Mateo (who she’s not allowed to meet) and the twins (who she hasn’t met yet). Rose-as-Eileen asks about the cops and Rafael tells them about Scott’s death.

When they get back to their room, Luisa starts to ask Rose-as-Eileen about Scott, but they go out to the patio and put on a white-noise machine so that any bugs can’t hear them. Rose-as-Eileen insists that she didn’t kill Scott, even though they were in Miami around that time. Luisa is still having a hard time trusting Rose-as-Eileen, which is why Rose-as-Eileen hates coming to the Marbella. They agree that they should switch rooms, just in case their room is wired (which it is).

Meanwhile, Jane practices her elevator pitch in the car. She’s obviously nervous for this meeting. In the meeting, the marketing team wants her to publicize her crazy backstory, but Jane doesn’t agree. She wants the work to shine, not her. But the marketing team tells her that if she talks about her life, she can get interviews at places like the Miami book fair, which is moderated by one of Jane’s favorite authors Maria Semple. Even so, Jane refuses. The marketing team tells her that they will get back to her on the size of the initial print run.

Later, Jane confronts Jeremy. She wants to know if her past is why he bought her book and he admits it was part of it. He tells her that her book will still sell, but the print run of 10,000 copies isn’t as big as he’d hoped. Jeremy also tells her that to get into the book fair she needs a big social media presence, which Jane definitely does not have. She would need to get 20,000 followers minimum, but Jane just happens to know a social media expert.

Jane arrives on set looking for Rogelio and runs into Fabian. He tells her that Rogelio pulled a muscle doing a stunt, but he will be okay after an emergency massage. Upon learning Jane is an author, he tells her that he wrote a book too. He offers to buy her a coffee while she waits for Rogelio and Jane accepts.

Rafael stops by Petra’s suite to check on how her call with Anezka went. It went well, since Anezka is on her way back to Miami. Rafael thinks that seeing Anezka again will be traumatic for Petra, but Chuck doesn’t agree. Rafael and Chuck argue a little and Petra insists that she can handle it. Rafael gets a text from Elvis, and leaves.

Elvis tells Rafael that Luisa switched rooms. Rafael instructs him to repair their AC (which Rafael will shut off) and put in a bug while he’s there.

At coffee Jane tells Fabian about her book. He puts on the moves, but quickly makes a scene. He claims that Jane broke his heart and storms off in a flurry of paparazzi. As Jane is walking off, Fabian grabs her and tells her that he made a scene so that she would get more Twitter followers. He also asks her to talk to Rogelio about him because Rogelio is his hero. Jane agrees to put in a good word for Fabian. Although Rogelio is upset at first, he calms down when Jane tells him that Fabian was just trying to impress him.

At home, Jane tells Alba about Fabian not liking her and Alba is happy. Even though it’s Jane’s choice, Alba believes there’s a difference between feeling desire and acting on it. Speaking of, she tells Jane that apparently sex was a dealbreaker for Jorge since he hasn’t texted or called since she told him.

Luisa and Rose-as-Eileen have noticed that the AC is broken in their new room. Rose-as-Eileen is very suspicious and refuses to leave the room unattended, even for a dinner with Rafael.

On the phone with Jeremy, Jane learns that her Twitter followers weren’t enough to get her in the book fair. Jane’s new followers were all from Latin America, which doesn’t translate to sales unless the book is printed in Spanish. Jane is frustrated.

At the telenovela Rogelio confronts Fabian about his insults about needing a stunt double, which Fabian defends by saying that the show couldn’t continue if Rogelio got hurt. Fabian worships Rogelio and admits as much. Rogelio warns him not to toy with Jane’s emotions, and accidentally lets slip that Jane does like Fabian.

Jane meets with Professor Donaldson (Melanie Mayron) and asks her for a favor: one of her more well-known author friends to write a blurb for Jane’s book. She needs the blurb if she wants the first run to sell. Professor Donaldson encourages her to use her backstory to sell the book because this is Jane’s only chance at a debut novel. Jane calls Jeremy and tells him that the marketing department can sell the book however they want. He promises to get her into the book fair. After hanging up, Jane gets a little emotional.

At dinner, Luisa tells Rafael that Rose-as-Eileen isn’t there because she’s out of the hotel with her guru. Rafael texts Elvis that the room is empty. Luisa is upset that Rafael is distracted and Rafael persuades her to stay by telling her that it’s worth having a longer conversation about Luisa meeting his kids.

Meanwhile, Rose-as-Eileen gets so hot that she takes off her Eileen mask, just as Elvis starts to enter the room! However, she manages to evade him by pretending to be changing, lifting her shirt over her face and ordering Elvis to leave.

Thankfully, Jane is officially in the book fair! Xo and Alba, seeing her emotions, tell her that the more she talks about Michael the easier it will get. Jane just doesn’t want Michael to be an anecdote and Alba promises that he won’t be. As someone who has gone through the loss of a husband, Alba is the perfect person to tell Jane that the grief has to evolve.

At the Miami book fair, Jane tells the audience that writing her book was part of her grief process. Maria Semple is moderating the panel and asks Jane if she had any hesitations talking about this. Jane says that of course she did, but writing comes with exposure and vulnerability. As Jane answers, Fabian shows up and sees her in a different light: a sexy, waterfall-drenched light.

After the panel, Mateo (Joseph Sanders) exclaims that he wants to read Jane’s book. She promises that he can read it when he’s older because, as the narrator (Anthony Mendez) tells us, it’s racy. Jane meets a woman (Rachel Rosenbloom) who got an advanced copy of Jane’s book. She raves about it and Jane has her first fan!

Later at home Xo is proud of Jane, but still teases her about Fabian. Jane tells her that she’s over Fabian because she thinks he bailed on the book fair. Of course, Fabian shows up to tell Jane that he couldn’t stop thinking about her after the book fair and he didn’t say hello because he was too nervous. Her words spoke to her and he thinks she’ll see why when she reads his book, which he gives to her. He also spoke to Rogelio who said it’s okay for Fabian to ask Jane out, which he does. Jane says yes, and they kiss! Of course, they get hit by the sprinklers.

Rafael picks the twins up from Petra. He makes sure Petra knows she can call him if she needs him because Anezka is arriving that day. After he leaves, Chuck points out that Rafael is in love with Petra, which she pretends to be ignorant about.

At the gift shop, Alba can’t make eye contact with Jorge. He notices and tells her that he wishes that things didn’t have to be this way. Alba is not willing to compromise on her values and Jorge wonders why that means they have to break up. It turns out that both of them thought the other ended the relationship. Jorge wasn’t upset, just surprised. He likes Alba and can live with no sex. They agree to keep dating!

Jane goes to set and runs into Rogelio and Xo, who congratulate her on her book order being increased. When Jane makes it clear she is there to see Fabian, Rogelio acknowledges that she makes her own decisions and supports her. Xo knows that Rogelio is lying though and he admits that it’s hard thinking about Jane dating someone new. Michael was Rogelio’s best friend and he misses him. Xo assures him that Fabian is not taking Michael’s place.

Jane, Alba and Xo read through Fabian’s book, and they have a good time laughing about the ridiculousness of it all. Despite his shallowness, Jane promises that she is totally going to hit that.

Meanwhile, Petra is freaking out because Anezka is late and Petra knows what she’s capable of.

Someone else is freaking out too: Rose. She wants to leave, but Luisa doesn’t want to go because she is finally having a breakthrough with Rafael. Rose tells her that she’s leaving, no matter what. Will Luisa go with her?

Petra finally hears from Anezka. She was arrested as soon as she got off the plane! She tells Petra that she had better fix this or Anezka will tell the police everything she knows about Petra’s misdeeds!
