Jayma Mays – Laugh In

By  |

Q.  What are some of the recent projects that you’ve been working on?

A.  I’ve been really fortunate the past little while, very blessed.  I actually just wrapped a movie on Friday which right now has a working title of Bob Bailey.  But, it’s a spoof movie and it is really my first lead in a film. We just literally wrapped a few days ago, that was a lot of fun and it should be coming out towards the beginning of next year.  “Studio 60,” I did a little spot on that, which is going to be a really great show.  I think I’m obsessed with Aaron Sorkin so that was an honor.

Q.  What can you tell us about “Studio 60” and the character that you play?

A.  I play the publicist to one of the actresses who is playing an actress on the show.  It can get complicated when you’re talking about this because it’s mirroring everything that we actually talk about.  So, I play one of the publicists that is there during the beginning episodes.  Some stuff kind of hits the fan and I am there in the midst of it as a publicist to try and help things out a bit.

Q.  What made you want to be a part of this show?

A.  Well, I am a huge Aaron Sorkin fan, I just think everything that he writes is pretty brilliant.  It’s so funny, when you through a lot of scripts – especially during pilot season, only a couple tend to pop out at you.  When you read something from somebody so established and really genius at writing, you can’t not say no to working somebody like that.  Tommy Schlamme was the director and he’s a wonderful director.  It was just such an honor to do.

Q.  Do you have a most memorable moment from working on Bob Bailey?

A.  There are so many, it was really the best group of people that I have ever worked with in my entire life.  I completely mean it, I’m not lying at all!  Well, we had some scenes with Cripsin Glover which was quite interesting.  There are a lot of movies that we are spoofing like Narnia and we had a lot of scenes with snow falling everywhere.  Beautiful scenes yet there is all this comedic nonsense going on.  It’s going to be a really, really fun movie I think.

Q.  Since the movie is a comedy, does comedic timing come naturally for you or are you constantly working at it?

A.  You know, I come from a family of goofballs so I think that I got some comedic timing inherited.  But, I am drawn a little more to comedy and it’s funny, I didn’t start out doing comedy in college.  I mostly did drama but I think everything is so serious in college anyways.  But, I am drawn to comedy a little bit more, I think it is in me a bit.

Q.  How was getting to work with the two directors on the film?

A.  They were really great guys, the most relaxed, calm and fun guys.  To do a film like that, you couldn’t ask for directors that would be better at directing a film like that.  They’re just really great, they let you try anything that you want to try.  I think is a really vital, essential component to doing a spoof film.  So, they were really wonderful and they were also the writers.  They knew what they wanted going into it and I hope that they got what they wanted.  They were great!

Q.  You say spoof film, is it along the lines of spoof movies like Scary Movie?

A.  We didn’t do any horror films, but yeah, that’s the idea of it.  There are a lot of different movies intertwined to make one big story.  These are the guys that wrote Date Movie so there are a lot of different things going in the film but they all tie together.  This one mostly focuses on epic movies, that would probably be the best way to say it.

Q.  So, movies along the lines of The Lord of the Rings, Superman or Pirates of the Caribbean?

A.  Yeah, we did Narnia and we did Willy Wonka, a little spoof of Da Vinici.  Kind of the bigger movies that come out in the summer.  There are might be a few of those movies you mentioned in there too, it’s like twenty movies in one.  This has quite a bigger cast and there are basically four kids from Narnia; even though we are not nearly as young.  So, there is Lucy, Peter, Edward and Susan and we kind of all come together and go through this big, epic adventure together.

Q.  Why should viewers take the time to check out the movie when it comes out?

A.  Please tell everyone to go and see it!  It’s one of those films that you should leave everything at the door when you go and see it.  You want to go and have a good time and just let go.  It’s a spoof movie, if you want to go and see something fun, that’s why you’d go and see it.

Q.  What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

A.  Well, when I have spare time I have two cats so I take care of them.  But, I am very domestic at home, I like to cook.  I like watching HGTV and The Food Network.  I play a bit of the piano and I try to be creative every day if I possibly can.

Q.  Do you have a latest obsession?  Are you into any particular book, music group, activity or sport?

A.  I am completely obsessed with The Sounds, I just saw them a couple of weeks ago.  They are a band from Sweden and I just love them.  The opening band for them I am quite addicted to now as well.  They are amazing too, they’re a band called Supercreep,  they were a really great combo to see together.  I do listen to a lot of music now that I think of it!  Since we’re talking about music, there is another really great hardcore, Rock and Roll band called Glitterati.  They are from the UK but they are actually over here right now, I just saw them a few nights ago.  They are so fun to listen to!

Q.  What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?

A.  A big fat, juicy thank you!
