Kaitlin Olson – The Sunny Side

Q.  What are the recent projects that you’ve been working on?

A.  I am working on a show for FX called “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”  Our second season starts in June!

Q.  For those not familiar with the show, what can you tell us about the premise for “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” and about your character?

A.  Well, the show is about four friends who own and run a bar in Philadelphia, a run down bar.  I play Dee, it’s me, my brother and two of our friends from high school who are the main characters.  This season Danny DeVito joins the cast as my dad.  It’s really funny, it’s kind of a darker comedy.  There are a lot of topics that we sort of explore and laugh at that you can’t really cover on network television.  It’s really fun, it’s kind of inappropriate humor.

Q.  What originally made you want to be a part of this show?

A.  The script, it was so fresh and to be out there in pilot season you read a lot of the same types of scripts over and over.  This one absolutely stood out, it was much more risqué with the subject matter.  It’s stuff that you laugh at that you’re like, “I’m not supposed to be laughing at this.”  You can’t help it though because it’s so funny, it’s risqué and it’s edgy and it’s really smart.  I loved it instantly as soon as I read it.  I feel pretty lucky to be a part of it, it’s very fun, totally my sense of humor too.

Q.  Danny DeVito was added to the cast as your father.  How was getting to work alongside this notable actor?

A.  You know what, it was pretty amazing.  We were all really excited to meet him just because he’s a huge star.  We all thought he was extremely talented and funny.  When we actually met him the experience of being able to work with him is pretty unbelievable.  He’s such a loving, funny person.  We all have such an amazing time every single day, we’re laughing constantly.  He really just became one of our friends instantly.  It certainly doesn’t feel like work working with him.

Q.  Do you have a most memorable moment from working on the show?

A.  We did an episode last year where the boys go to an abortion rally to pick up on girls, which is always appropriate.  My brother character decides that the girls weren’t hot enough on the pro choice side.  He tries to climb the fence to go to the anti-abortion side and an all out egg war starts and we get to hit him with eggs.  We got to do that over and over with so many takes of me throwing eggs at him.  We couldn’t get it right so we ended up doing it for an hour while Glenn Howerton who plays my brother was balancing on the fence.  By the end he was just like, “Please get me down from here!”  He was covered in egg yolk, it was fun.

Q.  You have quit a flair for comedy.  Is this something that comes naturally or are you constantly working on it?

A.  No, I’m just naturally hilarious!  All of my life I’ve just been brilliant, smart, funny and beautiful; naturally all of it!  I’m kidding!  I don’t know, I don’t take myself too seriously.  It’s fun to make people laugh.  I did the Groundlings for a really long time, I’ve got a funny dad.  I have good friends, I like making people laugh, it makes me happy.

Q.  The show addresses serious issues in a unique and unpredictable way.  Have you found that this aspect has hurt or helped the show?

A.  I think it’s helped the show, like I said, we don’t really take ourselves too seriously.  They are really risqué topics but the thing is none of the characters are full of malice or are bad people.  We just find ourselves in tricky situations.  These are things that happen in real life, you might as well laugh about it.

Q.  What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

A.  I have a dog who is one and a half and he has a lot of energy.  I do a lot of puppy training and hiking with him in my spare time.  I like to go on little weekend trips and hang out with my friends.  I like to hang out at the beach.

Q.  Do you have a latest obsession?  Are you into any particular book, sport, music group or activity?

A.  That’s a good question.  Here is my obsession, “24.”  I can’t get enough of that damn show, it’s really good.  Agent Jack Bauer really finds himself in some tricky situations.

Q.  What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?

A.  I would like to say thank you so much and I hope I don’t let you down!  No, I just really appreciate it, I hope everybody watches the show and loves it.  We think it’s pretty great and we hope you like it.
