Kevin McHale – Summer Nights

Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?

A) I just finished up my 3rd season of hosting a fun comedy show in the UK and the there stuff I don’t want to jinx!

Q) You recently released the song “Summer Nights” with Justin Thorne. Where did the idea for the song come from?

A) Justin [Thorne] and our friend Chris Moy wrote it. I grew up with Justin and immediately could relate to all of the things. Our “summer nights” were basically the same since I was fourteen years old. Justin’s very nostalgic so it was the perfect thing for him to do and I think for me to sing with him.

Q) Can you talk about the collaboration and how you balanced out your individual visions for the sound of the song?

A) I really didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes. I trust Justin and Chris “Tek” O’Ryan (who produced the song with Justin) immensely so I really wanted to leave it up to them, but they really told me to just do what I wanted! It was really fun and easy, which is how it should be!

Q) What kind of fan response have you gotten to the song?

A) I think the best thing is, is having people say the relate to it. It’s definitely a song based around nostalgia and the ‘ol summer hangover, when it starts to get cooler out and you don’t want summer to be over yet. Hearing those stories has been great.

Q) How does the video for “Summer Nights” fit with the message of the song?

A) It was really just about showing you that one night. There’s no school, no curfew, just you and your friends being free to do whatever you want. So, we wanted to invoke all of those memories when you watch it, to make you miss it and want to go back.

Q) We know you are a burger fanatic. Was a visit to In-N-Out burger a must for the video?

A) Oh yeah, Cheeseburger Sunday is a very real thing for my entire friend group so it was a collective decision. It wasn’t even a decision, I think it was just assumed!

Q) Were you working on new material through “Glee” or did you focus on it more after the series ended?

A) I actually spent one summer a few years ago working on music. I just didn’t tell anyone. I recorded A LOT of songs. It ended up burring myself out a bit and losing focus on what I really wanted to be doing so I left it. Now that “Glee” is done, I have the time to really figure it out.

Q) Are there any plans to release an EP or full length album in the future?
A) I suppose that would be the goal. I don’t want to get ahead of myself. I’m just taking it one song at a time and, hopefully, I’ll have a few that I really love and then I’ll be forcing it up on everyone to listen!

Q) Who would a dream for you to collaborate with on a song?

A) There are so many people! I have an idea for something with some people I used to work with. 😉

Q) You’re an actor, singer and dancer (a triple threat). Is there anything else you would like to try your hands at in the future?

A) I think I’d like to work on improving the first two things as much as possible. Those two are enough for me, for now. We’ll see what happens!

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) I genuinely love it. Well, most of the time. I love being able to instantly talk to people and hear what they have to say. I think a lot people on social media are so funny and smart and it’s really nice to be able to be a part of some of that.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) Well, without people there who care and who really support you there’s really no point in doing all of this. It doesn’t go unnoticed, all of the amazing things people do and say. I never take it for granted. I’m a fan of tons of people and I know how it feels to feel even remotely passionate about something. So, to have someone who could maybe even possibly feel that way about something I’ve done is surreal. I’m a lucky boy.
