Larry Poindexter – On the Hunt

Q) What are the current projects that you are working on?

A) I have been working on “Blade” the series. I did the movie Material Girls with Hilary and Haylie Duff, which was directed by a wonderful director named Martha Coolidge, whom I worked with three or four times. It’s just very wonderful working with her. I also did an independent movie called Mojave Phone Booth that my friend John Putch, who I have worked with many number of times, cast me in. We made that a collective. We, actually, filmed that together where everyone, kind of, pulls our resources together. It’s a contract that allows all of us to participate in the movie. Everyone puts in their time, energy and everything for free in hopes that at some point it will come back and be profitable for everyone.

Q) Please tell us about your character on the show “Blade” and about your character.

A) I am playing Detective Ray Collins, who is a special agent for the FBI. I’ve been assigned to track down what appears to be a serial killer and I find myself kind of drawn into this world of vampires, Blade and everyone else in the show. I think I am a rather tortured soul. He lost his wife and daughter about a year and a half prior to the story to another serial killer. He’s back to work a little early and he’s not quite sure his sanity as he’s finding out about these vampires.

Q) What made you ant to be a part of the show?

A) Honestly, the truth of the matter is, two things happened. One, I haven’t played a lot of cops. I tend to play guys who are either the bad guy on the show, the morally ambivalent boss, the Assistant District Attorney or a politician. It was an opportunity to do something else and that was exciting and fun. The other reason is that the producer, David S. Goyer, is someone I had worked with a number of times. He is the Executive Producer on the show. He had thought of me for the part and had wanted me to try something else, as well. So, that came together and I got to do something that I hadn’t done before, run around with a gun, chase bad guys and be sort of tortured and sad.

Q) What has been your most memorable moment from filming?

A) In the last episode I did, which is the one before the season finale, I finally got to hook up with Blade in the course of the show. Sticky Fingaz [who plays Blade] and I got to work together and that was a really good time. We had a really good time working together. I enjoyed the work and I enjoyed the company. We had a huge fight scene with vampires and there was a lot of blood. I think the most memorable moment is sitting in a pool of red corn syrup and fake garlic holding vampires at bay. It was a lot of fun! It was like a kid being in a play. It was really fun!

Q) Why should viewers tune in to “Blade?”

A) There are two reasons. The first thing is that people who enjoyed the movies will see a continuation of the character and a deepening of that story and universe that David S. Goyer created. It is kind of like a story from the scientific viewpoint of the vampire phenomenon. I think people who enjoyed the movies will get a blast from this because they’ll see the universe expanding to include a lot of other things. People who liked the comic books will also see characters from them popping up occasionally and making experiences. Also, people who aren’t familiar with it will have an opportunity, I think, (as much as I liked “Buffy” and “Angel” [which I know the show has been compared to already]) to that it’s a little more adult, ruckus and straight forward and dark than those particular television shows. It’s a good reason to tune in if you want something more straight ahead and more action oriented.

Q) You’ve guest starred on numerous prominent shows. Which project has been your favorite and why?

A) I think it would be “JAG” because I got to work with a wonderful actress, who I was friends with prior to doing the show, Catherine Bell. That was just great. We had great chemistry and had a great time together. I think another would be “Will and Grace.” It was one of the best half hours I’ve gotten a chance to work on. I got to work with some amazingly talented people and I had a great time. Also, I recently did an episode of “Crossing Jordan” that I just had the best time on. I thought it was a really difficult role as a grieving father. That was something that was very emotional and hard to do. It was rewarding when I accomplished it. Miguel Ferrer directed that episode and is also on the show. He was just a joy to work with. Those are the three that stand out in my mind recently. I enjoyed those. I also did a episode for the pilot to “Primary,” which is now called “Standoff,” that is a new television show for FOX. I got to work with Tim Story, who is the director of the Fantastic Four stories and also the upcomingFantastic Four sequel. He was just great. Whatever the last thing I worked on is always good.

Q) Who would you most like to work with in the future?

A) I would love to work with Brad Pitt. I think he’s exciting and a wonderful actor. You can’t mention Brad Pitt without saying Angelina Jolie. I’d love to work with her, she’s a wonderful actress. I’ve been acquaintances with Jennifer Aniston over the years and we’ve never had a chance to work together. That’s someone I’d love to work with. Bruce Greenwood and I have been friends for years and, yet, we haven’t had the opportunity to work together. It’s usually people that I am friends with and would love to be able to have the chance to actually do something together. Scheduling, possible work, roles that you get the chance to audition for, etc. sometimes prevent you from doing that. I’d love to work with Samuel L. Jackson again. We had a really wonderful time on S.W.A.T. and that would be really great. I really respect him and what he brought to the table. He was such a professional and such a good guy to work with. I really would love to get the chance to work with him again.

Q) You’ve tried acting, producing and casting. What else would you like to try your hand at?

A) I am the recent brand new father of twins so that seems to be the new job. I am going to try and get good at that. I have twin boys that are eleven weeks old now and that’s the new project. I think that’s the new project for a while. I think that and trying to continue working as an actor to make a living to support my two beautiful new boys.

Q) What do you do in your spare time?

A) I don’t think there is any spare time now! There used to be! Mostly, it’s raising the kids. Occasionally, I get to work on the house and, certainly, a lot of my activities end up being are fun as a hobby. I continue to play guitar and write music. I don’t get to play out in the band anymore. I do have a home studio so I get to play around with that as much as possible. Right now, there is very little time. Mostly, it’s kids and taking care of them.

Q) What is your latest obsession? A book? A movie? A sport?

A) I have been a Clippers fan for twenty years, so that’s been big that they actually made it into the playoffs and had a good run. Although, I was in Canada for a lot of the playoffs so I didn’t get to see a lot of the games. Basketball continues to be an obsession. And, then, I read a lot of books by Lee Child who is a crime fiction writer. I’ve been plowing my ways through his books.
