Look Out Love – Never Know

Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) The term I use to describe my sound would be “hella rad indie pop.” Driving indie pop that isn’t afraid to be quirky and dance-y.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) My biggest influences are The Beatles. It’s safe to say I wouldn’t be a songwriter if it weren’t for John Lennon’s influence. With modern artists, you can definitely hear inspiration from The 1975, Two Door Cinema Club and Vampire Weekend.

Q) Your new single “Never Know” is out now. Where did the idea for it come from?

A) The idea came to me from this concept I came up with called “blinding love,” which is the feeling of being so infatuated with someone that you lose control of your senses and surroundings and all you can see and focus on is that person you’re with. That being said, the song takes a deceptive turn with the chorus “She can never know that I was here with you.” It gives even more meaning to that blinding love feeling.

Q) What kind of fan response have you gotten to it?

A) Everyone has really been digging this new EP. It’s definitely a new sound and direction for my music, which used to be more pop driven. Pop influence is still there, for sure, but it’s got more guts to it. It’s a more mature sound for sure which has lead to better fan reception.

Q) What is it about “Never Know” that fans have connected with?

A) As I mentioned earlier, I think it’s that intense infatuation with someone that’s easy for people to relate to. It’s a great and very powerful feeling that everyone encounters at points in their lives.

Q) What is your process like for writing music? Do you need the lyrics before the music?

A) My writing process is very spontaneous and idea based. I’ll come up with an idea, be it a lyric, chord progression, song title, riff etc. and I’ll just roll with it. Sometimes the song will come together super quickly. Others take months to really get into my skin in order for me to finish them.

Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) I write and produce all of my music. It’s really great having everything at my fingertips. I’ve been producing my own material for years and, fortunately, my skills have been improving my leaps and bounds. In 2011, I worked with a producer named Stefan Clark to record an EP for me and his production skills blew me away. Just sitting in the studio with him watching him do his thing really inspired me to become a great producer.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) I’d love to collaborate with Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend. His writing is incredible and I feel like we could create something really interesting and fun.

Q) What is the feel and vibe for your EP Oh Boy?

A) It’s a taste of all our sounds compressed into a 4 track EP that can make fans dance and fall in love.

Q) What can fans expect from a live Love Out Loud performance?

A) Performing is my one true love and I always need to go the extra mile with shows. Any band can walk on stage, play songs, the audience will clap and that’ll be it. To me, shows need to be an experience. Feelings need to be shared between me the audience. I want my shows to have a certain theatrical feel that will make audience members leave the show thinking, “After a show like this, I can’t miss their next one.”

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) My fans are everything to me. Without them, I’m nothing. I find it very important to connect with them both in person and via social media. They take the time out of their lives to listen to and appreciate what I create. The least I can do is return the favor and show my appreciation for them.

Q) What do you want to be sure fans know about about Oh Boy?

A) Oh Boy is basically a PSA to listeners saying, “Hey! We are Look Out Love. This is what we do.” These songs were made to catch the attention of listeners who need something new and exciting musically in their lives.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your music?

A) The only two words I can think of are “THANK YOU.” The feeling of being supported my so many people is incredibly humbling and it makes me feel like I can do anything.
