Lucifer – Monster

Halloween is a night of haunting good times and candy, but with Lucifer it was a night of unmasking what could possibly be the best season ever. Last’s night episode was everything the fans wanted, dramatic yet comedic, which quite possibly lead to the most heartfelt episode brought to us from the cast and crew. The writers of Lucifer have brought their A game and there is no denying that the cast are acting with pure emotion and heart.

The opening scene of Lucifer starts with a Zombie wedding (literally, it was a zombie themed wedding). The wedding seemed like a cool idea, except the bridesmaid seemed a little upset at the bride, Peggy (AnnaMaria Demara). All of a sudden, a gun goes off and the groom, Edgar (Liam Hall), is shot in the arm. The guests, thinking it was all part of the wedding, don’t rush to help until the bride is shot down seconds after Edgar falls. Meanwhile, we see Lucifer (Tom Ellis) on a bender and by bender we mean he is drinking until he can’t think straight and trying to distract himself with girl after girl until Dr. Linda (Rachael Harris) shows up to make sure he is okay because he missed their session. While this is happening, we get a peek into what life is like for Chloe (Lauren German), Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) and Trixie (Scarlett Estevez) and how dysfunctional yet totally normal it is. When Chloe meets Dan (Kevin Alejandro) at the crime scene, she is shocked to see Lucifer in the state he’s in. She questions him on his sobriety and becoming increasingly annoyed with him and his behavior, like making out with the bridesmaid (he is quite the charmer).

When Lucifer is taken back the police station, Chloe starts to get worried about how he is acting and that leads to Dan questioning if she can handle working with Lucifer. As they are talking about the ex-boyfriend, Lucifer notices that the officer leaves the room where the guy is being held and goes into the room unnoticed by Chloe or Dan. Lucifer shuts the door and breaks the door knob so no one could get in. We soon see him with his eyes flaming red and a devilish smile appear. When Chloe questions Lucifer through the two-way mirror, she gets him to open the door for them to find the guy on the floor crying over the bride. The crying guy proved to be helpful as this was Peggy’s ex-boyfriend and he saw the suspect carrying a guitar case. This is the scene where Chloe gets so aggravated she threatens to bench Lucifer. Meanwhile, we see Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) tapping the piano in Lucifer’s club when Charlotte (Tricia Helfer) shows up offering comfort and advice to him after the death of Uriel (Michael Imperioli) saying, “People don’t grieve the same.” She tells her son to follow her because she had something to show him. These scenes are a testament to the writers of the show. As Lucifer and Chloe go follow up on a lead, they arrive at a food truck where they question Freddie, the man who owns it. One of his co-workers said that a man was looking for him that morning, but before Chloe could really do anything else a shot rings out and Freddie is killed.

Meanwhile, Lucifer’s behavior is getting worse and worse while Chloe is still trying to figure out what the connection is between the victims and what is happening with Lucifer. She is also dealing with the fact Maze is the one watching Trixie and is the only option to take Trixie trick-or-treating. Maze and Trixie have a moment about her costume not being what she wants. Back at the police station Chloe and Dan talk to Freddie’s wife who worked with Edgar who leads them in the direction they need for the case. Lucifer and Chloe go to the hospital to get info on the case and she once again pleads with Lucifer to open up to her and tell her what is going on. When Dan tells them the hospital wouldn’t release the reports Lucifer manages to get Dan’s badge and walks off only to show up with the files. They get into a tizzy and Lucifer halls off and decks Dan, leading to Chloe benching Lucifer.

Meanwhile, Charlotte takes Amenadiel through the woods and talk about when Amenadiel, Uriel and Lucifer were little and sheds a little insight to what life was like when they were growing up. Charlotte tells Amenadiel that none of this would have happened if it weren’t for her and that she is to blame – not Lucifer and not Amenadiel. Her. As they talk, Charlotte leads Amenadiel to a spot where Lucifer buried Uriel and tells Amenadiel that if God was down there on Earth he would see just how good Amenadiel is. As this is happening, Lucifer is once again back at the club drinking when he sees someone who looks like Uriel. Dan and Chloe have a moment where Dan makes the comment, “I don’t know what I would do if my wife did….” to have Chloe just say he wouldn’t kill multiple people. This leads to them figuring out who the killer is and Chloe finds out the suspect is making counterfeit badges to get into buildings where here he is planning his next attack.

As Maze and the President of Mars (a/k/a Trixie) go trick-or-treating, Maze becomes the cool Aunt everyone loves and wants in their life. Trixie makes the comment that she wished Maze had brought a costume which leads to Maze telling Trixie to turn around where she reveals her true form. This leads to Lucifer playing a beautifully haunting song on the piano as it goes back and forth to Amenadiel and Charlotte in the woods talking. Charlotte tells Amenadiel to just let it out, to stop holding it in back. Lucifer, in the club, stops mid-play and yells at people to get out of the club. This is when we finally see Lucifer at his breaking point. When Chloe and Dan arrive, they find the next victims – a husband and wife team of doctors. Chloe goes to find the wife at the coffee stand only to see Lucifer had arrived and was standing in front of the woman who was the target. Lucifer was yelling at the sniper to shoot him instead of the wife. The sniper shoots at Lucifer only to miss. Lucifer yells at him more and Chloe stands there watching in shock and (dare I say) in fear for Lucifer. Asking Lucifer what he was doing, he continues as he was. Chloe is able to see where the shots are coming from and goes for the shooter. As they walk the shooter out the doors, Lucifer asks why he kept missing. The man replies, “You didn’t deserve it.” This leads to Chloe once again pleading to Lucifer to talk to her to help her understand, which Lucifer replies, “You can’t understand Detective and you’ll never will.” This causes Chloe to choke up and tell him that if he won’t talk to her then at least talk to his therapist.

The end scene was one of the most powerful and brings the unmasking of Lucifer to a whole new level. Lucifer pleads with Linda to take him seriously and calls himself a “monster.” Linda tells Lucifer she needs him to be completely honest with her and that she needs to know the real Lucifer to be able to help him. No more lies and no more metaphors. This is when we see Lucifer revealing his true self to Linda – the face of the fallen angel – leaving a stunned and speechless Linda in the chair as Lucifer walks out with a tear in his eye.
