Fresh off of Rami Malek’s Emmy win, the “Mr. Robot” second season finale ends with several answers and new questions. First, we flashback to Mr. Robot (Christian Slater) or Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) and Tyrell Wellick’s (Martin Wallstrom) car conversation from last season. This shows Tyrell threatening Elliot with the reveal of his secrets and Elliot telling him that there is nothing he can do about it. Tyrell claims that they are destined to have met, but Elliot scoffs at the notion and says that Tyrell can’t see what’s above him. Tyrell pleads with him, telling him a story about his father and how he doesn’t want to become like him.

In the present, Tyrell leads Elliot into a building and a man inside takes them up to see Stage 2 of Mr. Robot’s plan. Elliot questions his senses as he is unable to believe that what he is seeing and hearing is really happening. After Tyrell realizes that Elliot doesn’t remember anything about Stage 2, he questions his readiness to go through with the plan. Elliot tells him that his wife, Joanna Wellick (Stephanie Corneliussen), has been looking for him, but he shrugs and says he’s doing what’s necessary. Tyrell begins to show Elliot what he’s been working on.

Darlene Alderson (Carly Chaikin), unscathed from the shooting that took Cisco’s life, sits in FBI headquarters with Dominique DiPierro (Grace Gummer) and her boss. DiPierro gives her condolences for Cisco’s death, but Darlene invokes her fifth amendment right and refuses to answer any questions that will incriminate herself. DiPierro’s boss tells her that she doesn’t have any rights under the Patriot Act. DiPierro asks him to leave and she tries to encourage Darlene to talk to her saying that they are both New Jersey girls.

Joanna goes to Scott Knowles’ (Brian Stokes Mitchell) and confronts him about the phone calls and the gifts he’s been sending her. Knowles talks about her last moments with his wife before Tyrell murdered her. He tells her that he did what he did so that she would feel how he felt and then breaks down sobbing. Joanna curses out Knowles and says that his wife deserved to die. Knowles gets angry and beats her, then backs away when realizing what he’s done and calls 911.

Back in FBI questioning, DiPierro informs Darlene that the fsociety members that they arrested identified Darlene as the ringleader. She laughs and says that she’s not a leader. DiPierro is not impressed and insists that Darlene needs to talk to her to work this out. Darlene scoffs at the notion that DiPierro cares about her and that she won’t be able to get any information out of her. DiPierro laughs and shows her the evidence she collected at Cisco’s apartment – the tape with Darlene’s face on it and the fsociety mask. When confronted with the evidence, she tries to downplay her role in fscoiety. Undeterred, she shows Darlene a third piece of evidence: a bullet from the gun that Darlene stole found in the fsociety arcade.

Meanwhile, Elliot looks through the master plan and sees the blueprints for a building with a power supply. He isn’t able to figure out what Mr. Robot’s plan is from the blueprints. Tyrell asks him to come look out the window and he sees several E Corp trucks parked outside delivering papers from around the country to a single building. Elliot realizes that E Corp is creating a new database and that Stage 2 is to create an explosion in the building using a malware program. Joanna’s boyfriend, Derek, is furious about Joanna’s attack and wants vengeance on the person who did this to her. She tells Derek (Chris Conroy) to lie to the police and say that he saw Scott Knowles coming down from the balcony where his wife was murdered.

Outisde the room, DiPierro and Santiago (Omar Metwally) discuss what to do about Darlene. DiPierro insists that getting Darlene to talk is the key to solving the investigation. She tries to appeal to Darlene yet again, and offers to show her something when that doesn’t work. Curious, Darlene follows DiPierro into a room. She discusses their original plan to catch fsociety, the Python approach, which involves waiting for them to come out and catch them. She shows her an incredibly accurate board of every fsociety member and everyone associated with them.

Elliot laments that all of his efforts to control Mr. Robot have been futile and he asks him why he continues to torment him, confronting him about his lies and his dealings with the Dark Army. Mr. Robot insists that they have to go all the way in their plans in order to succeed in their fight against E Corp. Elliot realizes that Mr. Robot is trying to discract him and goes over to Tyrell. To Tyrell’s surprise, Elliot starts to disable the malware despite Mr. Robot’s objections. Tyrell grabs a gun and points it at Elliot to get him to stop destroying everything they had worked on. Elliot believes that Tyrell is an illusion like Mr. Robot and insists that Tyrell can’t hurt him. Tyrell shoots Elliot and he realizes that the bullet is real when he falls on the ground bleeding. Tyrell tells Elliot that he gave him the gun to stop anyone who got in the way of his plans including Elliot – something Mr. Robot confirms as Elliot blacks out.

Angela (Portia Doubleday) receives a phone call from Tyrell about Elliot that she has been expecting. She confirms that he did the right thing for the plan, though how long she’s been in contact with Tyrell is unclear. Both Tyrell and Angela tell each other that they love Elliot as the city loses power. After the credits on the season roll, Trenton (Sunita Mani) and Mobley (Azhar Khan) sit outside a store in California on a lunch break. They discuss what Trenton found and whether it is possible to reverse the five/nine hack. As they sit there, Leon (Joey Bada$$) comes up to them and asks if they have the time.
