Nashville – ‘Till I Can Make it on my Own

When we last left our friends in “Nashville” poor Daphne (Maisy Stella) was having a breakdown, Scarlett (Clare Bowen)  learned she’s carrying Damien’s (Christian Coulson) baby and Juliette’s (Hayden Panettiere) new gospel album bombed. Will (Chris Carmack) and Zach’s (Cameron Scoggins) relationship seems to be heating up and Maddie (Lennon Stella) is in the middle of making her own album. Things post Rayna (Connie Britton) seem to be moving right along, but her absence is still felt in a big way if you’ve been a fan of the show since the beginning. Deacon (Charles Esten) has pulled himself together, but will never be whole again.

This week opens up with Juliette at the doctor. She’s been having panic attacks or what she thinks are panic attacks. They are more like out of body experiences. The doctor wants to send her to a psychiatrist. The doctor tells her to avoid stress, but Juliette has a performance the next day and Avery (Jonathan Jackson) tells her maybe she should cancel. Avery thinks maybe the trauma the doctor referred to could have something to do with Juliette’s father but Juliette said she doesn’t even remember him.

Deacon overhears Daphne singing a new song and asks her what it is, but she just says nothing. He asks both the girls if they want to go to the festival together, but they both say they have plans. Remember they’re handling Daphne with kid gloves right now. The festival Deacon was referring to is part of Music City’s Music Week and there is even a cameo by “The Voice” winner Cassadee Pope. Zach is still hell bent on firing Bucky (David Alford), but Deacon is not on board. Zach wants to release Maddie’s new single at midnight under the radar, but Bucky wants to do it the old fashioned way – the way they’ve always done things.

Daphne heads back downtown to see her new friend Liv (Odessa Aldon) that she met last week and isn’t met with the best reception from Liv’s friends. Scarlett learns that Damien’s in town and Gunnar (Sam Palladio) tells her that she can’t avoid him forever. Juliette has made the decision to lie to Hallie (Rhiannon Giddens) and tell her that the label made the decision to have her perform alone without the choir. She said they want to play things safe. Juliette is also having visions of her dad and herself when she was a little girl.

Daphne is hanging with a band of thugs. She tags along with them as they break into a  junkyard and get caught. They all scatter and Liv gets cut by a barbed wire fence. Luckily, Daphne stayed outside the fence so she wasn’t hurt; however, her feelings did get hurt when Liv yelled at her and told her to leave while getting her injuries tended to. She wants Liv to go to the hospital and that’s not a popular suggestion.

Avery and his band are performing at the festival and, no, it’s not country music, but wow is it good! Who knew Avery could sing like that? He has sung on the show before, but he’s in a whole new element now. Daphne didn’t leave when Liv told her and Liv was surprised that she stuck around. Daphne tells her that she is coming home with her. Avery’s agent tells him that he just booked him on a tour. It’s twenty cities and he will need to leave in ten days. Avery instantly thinks of Juliette.

Juliette is rehearsing and she’s having trouble dancing due to her weak leg. She’s still having visions of her and her dad as well. Avery tells her that no one says she has to do this and Juliette tells him that she’s nearly forgotten and she has to do this. Scarlett meets Damien for drinks and tells him that she’s pregnant and he’s the father. Scarlett tells him that a blood test ruled out Gunnar and she knows that he is the father. Damien proceeds to offer her money to make things easier for her. So far the only thing this guy has going for him is his accent.

Scarlett and Gunnar have a performance after Scarlett’s meeting with Damien. Those two are electric on stage with each other for sure. Deacon tells Bucky that Zach wants him out. Bucky is speechless, but Deacon tells him that he’s not going to let him happen. Daphne tells Liv that she should just stay with her and Liv asks her what about her parents. Daphne tells her that it’s just her stepdad. She tells her that her mom died and her real dad is in jail. Deacon and Maddie catch Daphne raiding the fridge with enough food for a party, but don’t really say much to her about it.

Juliette has a dream about her dad leaving to go buy bourbon for her mom. We’re wondering if this has something to do with what happened to her mom. Emily gives Hallie her ticket, backstage pass and parking pass for the concert. She also gives the impression that it was Juliette’s decision to cut the choir from the show. This leads to a huge blowup between Hallie and Juliette. Deacon found Liv’s bandage in his trash can and knew Daphne was hiding something. When he confronts her she continues to lie. Daphne thinks he bought it, but then he comes in and catches her and Liv.

Avery comes home and tells Juliette that Emily told him what happened and she asks him if he thinks she’s narcissistic. Then immediately tells him not to answer. Good choice girl! Juliette tells Avery that she’s so thankful to have him and thanks him for not running away. Guilt trip city! There is no way he’s going on this tour now! Juliette has another vision about her father. He was in an accident and died when she was a little girl. Juliette goes and apologizes to the choir and asks them to please come to the show and sing with her.

Deacon does not want to let Liv stay with them, but Daphne tells him she has nowhere else to go. Liv says she will leave. Deacon asks Liv how old she is and she tells him that she’s fifteen years old. Wow, fifteen years old and homeless! Spinoff? Liv doesn’t know where her parents are and tells Deacon that if he can find them to let her know. Deacon tells her that she can stay until they figure out something else.

Damien goes to Scarlett and tells her that he’s in love with her and they can make it work. Scarlett tells him not to say that because it’s not true. He tells her that he wants it to be true. Damien also apologizes for being an ass. We still think the only thing good about him is his accent. Avery tells Billy (Michael Chase) that he can’t go on the tour. He tells him that he’s not able to leave Juliette right now.

Bucky tells Deacon that he’s out. Deacon says that he’s going to fix it and Bucky tells him that it was his idea because he’s not going to let him sacrifice everything for him. Bucky tells him to be careful because he has a feeling that he’s only the first. Zach asks Deacon what he did and Deacon tells him that he knows what he did. Hey, Will, we don’t like your boyfriend anymore. What’s going to happen to Bucky now?

The choir came! Juliette is all ready to take the stage when she freezes again at the ladder she’s supposed to walk up. The choir keeps singing the introduction of the song while they’re waiting for Juliette. She’s having another vision of her dad, one that she had when she was a little girl. He told her that he would never leave her, he would always be watching over her. He saved her then and he saved her now. This scene gave us chills. Then, we see Juliette come down and walk out on stage. This is what this show is about – the music.
