Filled with many “Victorious” puns and family-friendly jokes, A Snow White Christmas (as presented by the Lythgoe Family Productions) is sure to be a ball of fun for kids of all ages.
The Lythgoe Family, a British theater production family, decided to make Snow White not your ordinary classic tale. In this version, the family made some changes, implementing pop songs and pop culture references. They even introduced new characters such as Muddles, a humorous joker who excels at improv. The story follows Prince Harry of Hancock Park (Curt Hansen) and jester Muddles (Jonathan Meza) as they embark on an adventurous search for Snow White (Ariana Grande). Snow White must then fake her death in order to escape the wrath of the Wicked Queen (Charlene Tilton, from TNT's “Dallas"). After her escape, she meets the Seven Dwarves in the forest (all of whom were casted by local children).
Ariana Grande shines as a innocent young Snow White, professionally belting out tunes such as Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” and Katy Perry’s “Firework.” Her YouTube subscribers (which are close to 700,000) would be proud. Unfortunately, the frequent booing by the audience was a bit heavy in some parts and distracted from the show (Muddles told the kids at the beginning of the performances to boo the Queen at any sight of her). Muddles makes an excellent joker and was one of the highlights of the theater performance for his uncanny way of lightening the mood and poking fun at audience members. His little bit at the end when everyone is reunited is sure to put audience members in a hysterical fit of laughter.
Probably the highlight of the theater performance was the Magic Mirror, as embodied by Neil Patrick Harris. “How I Met Your Mother” fans would be pleased, as his Magic Mirror character is similar to that of the role he plays of Barney on the show. He frequently raises his eyebrow and his sarcasm towards the Wicked Queen is pure Barney. Sadly, Harris is only a small portion of the show and those who come to watch him in-person would be disappointed since his character of the Magic Mirror is solely computer-generated. Nigel Lythgoe, the Executive Producer of "American Idol" and "So You Think You Can Dance" also makes a humorous surprise special guest cameo.
“A Snow White Christmas” will play at the Pasadena Playhouse from December 13 - 23, 2012.
