Supernatural – The Chitters

“Supernatural’s” latest episode The Chitters might have been a one-shot monster mystery; however, in true “Supernatural” form the viewers got to see parallels between The Winchesters with hunter Jessy (Lee Rumohr) who got into hunting after losing the older brother he idolized to a supernatural being.

The episode begins in 1989 in Colorado with brothers, Jesse (Valin Shinyei) and Matty (Connor Stanhope) in the woods. Matty calls out in distress as something drags him off, leaving twelve year old Jesse alone.

In the present day, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) are in the Men of Letters bunker talking about the Castiel situation. Sam reads an article and tells Dean about a case where a girl named Libby (Lauren Overholt) was taken by something. What is most interesting is that when she was found, she had green eyes.

The Winchesters go to Colorado and learn from Sheriff Tyson (Kandyse McClure) that people have gone missing every twenty seven years. Dean speaks with Libby’s friend, Cori (Jaylee Hamidi), who describes the creature as green-eyed, hairless and shaped like either a man or woman. Dean starts calling the monster “junkless” until Sam points out “That’s low even for us.”

Next, Sam and Dean talk with Etta (April Telek) who is the widow of one of the victims from 1989. She mentions strange things happening in town every twenty seven years where the townspeople have orgies and the sound they make is dubbed “chitters” by the townspeople. In fact, The Chitters are cicada spirits that use human bodies for procreation every twenty seven years.

A couple comes upon green-eyed people who attack, but the girl runs off. She later tells Sam, Dean and Sheriff Tyson that the things with green eyes were people they knew. Dean goes to check the woods and comes across a green-eyed Libby. Unfortunately, he gets jumped by a male creature, but luckily a man cuts the thing’s head off.

At a bar, Dean’s rescuer Jesse and his partner Cesar (Hugo Ateo) explain they are hunters who have been tracking the creatures. For Jesse it’s personal because one of those creatures took his brother Matty twenty seven years ago. Jesse tells Sam and Dean to hang back and let him take care of it.

Sam and Cesar talk with the former sheriff Cochran (Andy Maton) who worked the case in 1989. He reveals he found the creatures’ lair, but his daughter was there and was now one of them. When she attacked him like a rabid dog, he killed her. He then lied that the people had left town for brighter lights of other cities. Jesse is furious Cochran lied all these years. The ex-sheriff tells Sam and Jesse where to find the creatures.

Dean and Cesar make it to the old mine first. Dean finds a dead female pregnant creature and again gets attacked by the male, but this time he is able to put it down. There are several dead females as the males weren’t protecting the females but their eggs! Dean tells Cesar they will need heavy duty gasoline to torch the bodies. Sam and Jesse arrive and the four hunters go back inside the mine where Jesse finally gets to mourn Matty. Sam shares with Dean how he used to feel when he was younger, when he was worried that Dean and John would be killed and he would be left alone.

In the morning, Cesar and Jesse build a pyre for Matty to give him a hunter’s funeral. Sam and Dean talk about asking Cesar and Jesse to help with Castiel (Misha Collins) and Amara (Emily Swallow) until they learn that the hunters are planning on retiring. As it’s rare for hunters to be able to get out and have a happily-ever-after, Dean doesn’t want to stand in Jesse and Cesar’s way.

Next week on “Supernatural” it’s back to battling Amara and a mysterious fog…
