“The 100” delved into a darker side in its newest installment, Demons. The episode, set up like a horror story, once again further brought together all of the different storylines that have been playing out this season. A sense of foreboding is laced throughout the episode and remains in the viewer even after the final scene. If Demons is any indication for the rest of the season, things won’t be getting much better anytime soon for the characters.

Ghost Stories

No campfire is complete without ghost stories and that’s exactly how Demons begins. Hiding out in the cave, Harper (Chelsey Reist), Miller (Jarod Joseph) and Bryan (Jonathan Whitesell) are waiting for word from the others. In an attempt to pass the time, Miller begins to tell a story about the Unity Day Massacre, which completely freaks his boyfriend out. The ghost story quickly becomes reality; however, when Miller goes outside when “nature calls,” but never returns. One by one, all three are suddenly abducted by a masked figure.

Ghost Town

Arriving to Arkadia, Clarke (Eliza Taylor), Bellamy (Bob Morley), Monty (Christopher Larkin), Jasper (Devon Bostick), Raven (Lindsey Morgan) and Sinclair (Alessandro Juliani) discover that home has become a ghost town. Having been overrun by A.L.I.E. (Erica Cerra), everyone has abandoned the fallen Ark, leaving an unsettling scene behind. A puddle of blood from Lincoln’s execution still stains the ground, food is still left on the tables and to make matters worse the group isn’t able to get ahold of Harper, Miller and Bryan.

Attempting to get in and get out as quickly as possible, Jasper and Octavia split up from the rest of the group to go and retrieve Lincoln’s (Ricky Whittle) journal, which has Luna’s location in it. Entering their room, Octavia (Marie Avgeropoulos) breaks down, throwing Lincoln’s jacket. Trying to comfort her, having experienced loss himself, Jasper tells her that it’s okay to fall apart. But Octavia is a warrior, and warriors don’t mourn their dead until the war is over. And, like those in the cave, Octavia and Jasper are soon attacked by a masked figure.

Meanwhile, Raven, Clarke and Sinclair are trying to activate the Flame (a/k/a/ the second A.I.) Raven has been reading Becca’s journal and has discovered that it is activated by a phrase. It would have been something that was important to Lexa, something that she said often. Jus drein jus daun (Blood must have blood). Clarke had heard Lexa say on multiple occasions as the phrase is the legacy of the Commanders. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work. They soon realize that the most likely phrase is “Seek higher things” and because Becca’s journal has Latin in it, the phrase most likely has to be spoken in Latin. Sinclair gives it a try and the A.I. activates. As Raven inches her face closer to it, the A.I. detecting her mind, Clarke quickly pulls her away. Only a Nightblood can accept the Flame. Becca had modified her own blood in order for her body to be able to accept the A.I.

Monty and Clarke split off from the rest of the group now and Monty wonders what happens when they shut down A.L.I.E. His mother is in the City of Light and shutting it down will mean losing her forever. Before they can discuss this any further, creepy music is heard and they follow the noise. The source of the music? A carefully placed carousel toy. A smoke bomb is thrown into the room and the masked man attacks. Clarke fights back, taking the man’s gas mask off and revealing him to be none other than Emerson (Toby Levins) before she runs out of the Ark.

Meeting back up with Bellamy, he and Clarke try to find the others. Nobody is answering the radio and they realize that Emerson has taken them along with Harper, Miller and Bryan. Clarke, following in Lexa’s newly enacted order of blood must not have blood, had allowed Emerson to live and she is now blaming herself for the danger that her friends are in.

Thankfully, Raven answers the radio and is warned that Emerson is in the Ark. Sinclair begins to lock all of the doors leading into the room that they are in, but the lights go out and Emerson gets in. Sinclair orders Raven to get into the rover and continues to fight off Emerson himself, but he fatally injures him. Unable to watch as Sinclair dies, Raven gets out of the rover, ignoring Sinclair’s persistent warnings for her to stay where it is safe. With that, Emerson takes her.

Finally making it into the room, Clarke and Bellamy find Sinclair’s body. Wanting to put an end to this, Clarke radios Emerson knowing that he has her friends held in the airlock room. Clarke barters with Emerson and makes a deal: if Emerson lets her friends go, he can have her. Emerson accepts the deal, but Bellamy doesn’t accept Clarke’s decision. He has his own plan that doesn’t involve Clarke sacrificing herself.

Walking to the airlock, Bellamy trails behind Clarke with a gun, remaining out of sight of Emerson. Emerson expected this; however, and puts a knife to Octavia’s neck, ordering Bellamy to drop his weapon. When Bellamy refuses, Emerson cuts a thin line across Octavia’s neck, which prompts her brother to surrender. Once Bellamy is handcuffed like the others, Clarke is ordered to kneel with her hands behind her head. Emerson leaves the airlock room, closing the door and pressing the button that vents the oxygen from the room. He wants Clarke to suffer the same way that he did. He wants Clarke to watch the ones that she loves die.

Clarke begs him to stop, but Emerson is adamant and Clarke fights back. Emerson gains the upper hand, though, beginning to choke her to weaken her before forcing her to watch her friends once again. In a last attempt, Clarke speaks the Latin words that activate the Flame and holds it to the back of Emerson’s neck. Emerson is not a Nightblood and the Flame takes his life.

Once everyone is awake and well again, they gather outside. Bellamy brings Lincoln’s body to Octavia and the group makes a pyre to burn the two bodies. They still have a mission, though, and they are still fighting a war. Raven, Monty, Harper, Bryan and Miller decide to stay back in Arkadia while Clarke, Bellamy and Jasper go to find Luna.

Light Reaches Polis

In Polis, things are still not going too well for Murphy (Richard Harmon), who is still acting as Flamekeeper. Emori (Luisa D’Oliveira) has shown up, which puts her life in danger. Murphy tells her to meet him in the Flamekeeper’s room, someplace that is safe from Ontari’s (Rhiannon Fish) constant watch. In the room, Emori recognizes some of the “tech.” She seems enthralled by the paintings on the wall, but is quickly distracted by Murphy kissing her. Once their make out session is done, Murphy is summoned by Ontari.

Ontari is in the throne room, speaking to her people, answering their requests. Surprise, surprise! Jaha (Isaiah Washington) shows up and so enters the City of Light to Polis. Jaha knows that Ontari is a false Commander. He has received this information from Emori, who has also consumed the chip and become one of A.L.I.E.’s minions. Everything that Murphy has told her about Ontari has been heard by A.L.I.E., and when Ontari realizes that Murphy betrayed her, he has him arrested. Jaha offers Ontari the chip, calling it the true legacy of Becca Primheda, the first Commander. Desperate to have her position legitimized, Ontari consumes the chip and the episode ends with A.L.I.E. sitting on the throne.

Final Thoughts…

Wow. What an episode! First of all, why are the women in constant pain and torment? Clarke is haunted by Lexa’s death. Clarke‘s decision to let Emerson lives comes back to haunt her. Clarke is forced to watch as her friends nearly die. Raven loses yet another person who she considers family. Lets add Murphy to this list, too. Something bad is always happening to him. Can’t they just be happy for once?

On a completely different note, A.L.I.E. is basically the new Commander. She now has access to all of Polis. A.L.I.E. has taken Arkadia and she is now on a mission to take the Grounders. The City of Light is going to quickly fill and unless Clarke can get the second A.I. to Luna, A.L.I.E. will achieve her goal and they will lose the war that they are fighting.
