The Bold Type – If You Can’t Do It With Feeling

By  |

By: Nicole Dintelman

This week on “The Bold Type” Sutton (Meghann Fahy) is texting Kat (Aisha Dee) about Jane (Katie Stevens) and Ryan (Dan Jeannotte) because Jane hasn’t come back from her date yet. She’s spoken too soon because at that moment Jane and Ryan bust through the door oblivious that Sutton is even sitting on the couch breaking lamps on the way to Jane’s room. Kat is still texting Sutton trying to figure out if they should do an intervention with Jane since she won’t even acknowledge that she’s dating Ryan. Meanwhile, in the bedroom, Ryan tells Jane to tell him what she wants. This is heating up fast!

Sutton texts Kat back to tell her that it sounds like Jane has things under control. The walls are really thin in their apartment. She also adds that she has Pilates on Thursday. Sutton is hilarious. Kat, not knowing what is going on in the apartment, tells Sutton to focus because Jane needs their help. Sutton decides to wager with Kat and once they get up to $100, Sutton is excited because now she can pay for her Pilates class.

The next day, Jane is so pleased with herself that she breaks out her leather pants. She’s feeling sexy and free now that she’s had the big-O. Jane tells Sutton that she feels invigorated. Kat brings coffee and tells Jane that it’s post orgasm coffee and Jane turns to Sutton upset that she’s already spilled the beans to Kat. Kat says that Sutton texted her while it was happening. Sutton tells Jane that the walls are really thin. Kat asks Jane how it happened and Jane tells her that she got out of her head. She says that he also said: “Tell me what you want.” Sutton asks if he’s Batman and Kat tells her to shush because Jane is just getting to the good part.

Jane says that she broke a lamp and Sutton tells her that she broke several lamps. Kat wants to know if lamps is a euphemism, but then Jane gets a text from Jacqueline (Melora Hardin). She needs to be in her office ASAP. Jane asks the girls if they think that Jacqueline knows and Sutton tells her that she probably heard her. Jacqueline tells Jane that she has been invited to be on a panel: Rising Political Voices Under 30. Jane is shocked, but excited. Jacqueline tells her she needs a bio and a photo. Richard (Sam Page) stops by Jacqueline’s office as Jane is leaving. Jacqueline tells him that she wants to launch a new vertical surrounding politics.

Adena (Nikohl Boosheri) comes to see Kat at Scarlet for the important matter she wanted to talk to her about. Adena tells her she wants to extend her work Visa and the process is a nightmare. She tells Kat she’s hoping she’d write her a character reference. Kat tells her that it’s no problem. Kat tells Sutton that she thought Adena was coming there to tell her that she had feelings for her and now she’s writing her a character reference. Jane comes in and tells Sutton that she needs her help picking out an outfit for her headshot.

Sutton asks Jane why she needs a headshot. Jane tells her that she’s appearing on a panel, young reporters with influential voices. Kat tells Jane that she’s killing her, she just had her first orgasm. A girl comes in right at that moment and looking embarrassed says she can come back. She then says no, actually she can’t. She tells Sutton that Oliver (Stephen Conrad Moore) needs to see her right away. Oliver tells Sutton that she needs to create a mood board. He wants her to make her feel something. Oliver says that Lauren (Emily Chang) brought him two applicants – one girl has no fashion experience, not even a job at the mall, and he really likes that she went to FIT. Sutton tries to interrupt him, but he just rushes out of the room.

Sutton tells Jane and Kat that Oliver thinks that she’s the other girl that Lauren recommended. Jane tells Oliver the truth and Kat tells her to take advantage of the circumstances. Sutton feels like she has to tell him the truth. Jane is in her photo shoot and telling Alex (Matt Ward) about the panel. He’s writing a piece about the panel. Jane spots Ryan at her desk and goes to see what he’s doing there. Ryan tells her that he had fun last night. Jane tells him that she had fun, too. Twice. He asks her out for that night, but she tells him about the panel and he invites himself to attend. Added nerves for Jane!

Kat is confused as to why Adena really wants her to write the letter for her. Sutton tells her to use the letter as an excuse to see her. Tell Adena she has questions about the letter. Sutton is really smart and we think Kat should listen to her. Kat agrees with us. Jacqueline has a treadmill in her office, which she’s using when Richard comes to tell her that the board doesn’t like the political idea. Jacqueline invites him to Jane’s panel. Well, not invite per say, but orders him to go.

Sutton sees Richard walk by and gets in the elevator with him to tell him about the fashion job. She wants to tell him that Oliver thinks she went to the Fashion Institute. Richard tells her that he would be lucky to have her. Sutton tells Jane that Ryan going to the panel moves them out of the casual sex category. Kat tells Sutton they should go and Jane tells them no, she has enough pressure with Jacqueline going. Sutton says that Richard’s going also and Jane asks why. Sutton says because Jacqueline wants to show him how woke they are when it comes to politics. Jane starts to freak out because she thinks Scarlet’s political future is resting on her shoulder. Kat tells her to calm down.

Adena tells Kat that she really appreciates her taking the letter so seriously. They’re walking by the water. Kat is visibly nervous. The other girl that Lauren recommended stops by Sutton’s desk to talk about FIT. Sutton tries to make up details, but it doesn’t go very well. Jane is dressed very professionally for her panel, but hearing the other accomplishments of the fellow panelists she’s feeling very inadequate. She’s also introduced as a political fashion commentator. It’s clear that Jane has her work cut out for her on this panel.

Kat and Adena are listening to a violin player and Kat starts to record him and Adena takes away her phone. Adena tells her to be in the moment. For the first time, Kat does just that. After the panel, Jane tells Ryan that she should have been more assertive. Ryan tells her that it wasn’t her fault. Adena gets a call from her mom and someone walks by and tells her she needs to speak English or go back where she came from. Adena tries to get Kat to leave but she doesn’t listen. Kat asks him what he said and he tells her that he thinks that her towel-head friend needs to speak English. Kat punches the guy in the face and the police show up immediately. Kat is now being arrested for assault and Adena is nowhere to be found.

The next morning Kat calls the Scarlet offices for Sutton or Jane, but the only one in is Jacqueline. Jacqueline goes to bail Kat out of jail and she’s embarrassed. Kat thanks her and tries to explain to her what happened. Richard runs into Oliver on the way into the office and lets it slip that Sutton doesn’t have a fashion degree. Alex tells Jane that he just finished the article about Jane. Jane asks him if it’s about the two sentences that she said. Alex tells her to stop being so hard on herself because what she did say was smart and insightful. Jane says that she doesn’t even know why she was there. Alex tells her Jane Stone is just getting started.

Oliver is looking at Sutton’s mood board and he asks her if this is it and she says yes. He tells her that he can really see the FIT influence. He asks her if she really went to FIT and she tells him no. Sutton tells him that she should have told him sooner and he says she didn’t. He says her opening move in their relationship was to lie to him. He thanks her then dismisses her. Sutton knows that she’s lost the job because she didn’t tell the truth when Oliver mistook her for the other girl. Sutton tells the girls and Kat feels bad because it was her suggestion to lie. Sutton tells her it was her choice so it’s her own fault.

Adena brings Kat her phone to Scarlet. Adena apologizes for what happened, but explains to Kat that she’s a Muslim lesbian living in today’s America and her choices are limited. Kat tells her that she can’t just stand back and let them win. Adena tells Kat that they’re just too different and leaves. Richard calls Sutton and she tells him that she’s not getting the job. Richard tells her an hour ago when he saw Oliver she was the frontrunner. Sutton is upset with him for spilling the beans to Oliver, but tells him that she’s going to deal with it herself.

Kat goes to thank Jacqueline again and tell her that the guy she hit isn’t going to press charges. Jacqueline asks how Adena is doing and Kat tells her that Adena says that she didn’t have a choice but you always have a choice. Jacqueline tells Kat that with Adena wanting to extend her Visa she may have felt like she didn’t. Kat asks Jacqueline if she thinks she could have been deported and Jacqueline says that she thinks it’s a real possibility.

Jane gets home and finds Sutton on a mission. Sutton has decided she’s going to show Oliver who she really is. She’s dug out stuff from her past and she’s going to make an actual mood board, not one on the computer. Sutton takes it to Oliver and tells him that she went to Penn State and lived at home because it’s all she could afford. She wants it more than she’s wanted anything in her entire life and she’d work her ass off for him. She leaves her board and tells him that’s the rest of what he needs to know about her.

Jacqueline tells Richard that she wants to discuss the political vertical. Richard tells him that it’s not a battle she can win and Jacqueline tells him it’s not a battle she’s going to fight. Scarlet’s readers don’t ask for permission and neither is she. Jacqueline tells Richard to tell the boys upstairs that Scarlet Magazine is going to launch a political vertical with the first piece by Kat Edison and they’re going to love it.

Olivier calls Sutton into his office and asks her who said: “If you can’t do it with feeling, don’t.” Sutton tells him it was Patsy Cline. Oliver is impressed and tells him he was in the back of his daddy’s pickup truck the first time he heard her sing. He’s never been to fashion school or a fancy college either. Sutton tells him he hides it well. Oliver tells her maybe too well and that he didn’t realize that until he saw her mood board. He tells her it’s real and real is what makes you who you are. Sutton asks him what he’s saying exactly. Oliver tells her that she gets one lie and she spent hers. Oliver tells her that he needs her to go tell Lauren that he poached her assistant.

Jane apologizes to Jacqueline for the panel. Jacqueline asks why and Jane tells her that she didn’t really say much. Jacqueline says that it doesn’t matter what you say and tells her that what she did say really resonated with people. She tells her to check her Twitter. Jane sees that Lydia Brooks quoted her and tries to tell Sutton but Sutton tells her that it’s about her now and drags her off. They try the fashion closet but it’s occupied so they go for the elevator. Sutton tells them she got the job so they start screaming and dancing in the elevator.

Ryan asks Jane if she’s feeling better and she tells him that she is. He tells her good and asks her if she wants to use that influential voice for something else like telling him what she wants. Jane tells him that he sounds like Batman when he does that. Sutton is admiring her mood board when Jane and Ryan come in so she grabs the lamp so they don’t break it then puts on her headphones. Maybe we should change their shipper name to Bane. Batman+Jane! Kat goes to apologize to Adena and gives her the character reference. She tells Adena that she completely throws her off her game and that she thinks she really likes her. Adena leans in and kisses her and we have chills.
