The Bold Type – O Hell No

On the second episode of “The Bold Type,” we join the girls trying to figure out if a sexual position can be accomplished. They need to know if it is physically possible to do. Of course, they have to act it out. Sutton (Meghann Fahy) orchestrates while Kat (Aisha Dee) and Jane (Katie Stevens) are the models and Jacqueline (Melora Hardin) catches them in the act. Jane tells Jacqueline she doesn’t think it’s physically possible and Jacqueline looks at the diagram. She tells the girls that it’s absolutely possible and there’s a staff meeting in fifteen minutes. Jacqueline then tells Jane to consider the article about the new position approved. Okay, Jacqueline has to be the coolest boss ever!

In the staff meeting another writer, Sage (Stephanie Costa),  brings in an article written by one of the writers downstairs and asks if anyone has checked it out. Jane asks who would want to actually F*%k like a pornstar? Jane says it’s typical male fantasy crap and it’s not what real men want is it and directs the question at Alex (Matt Ward). Alex asks if he can abstain from answering the question. Good call, Alex!  Alex tells Jane that it is a men’s magazine and men watch porn. Sage says that so do women. Jane said that can’t be true then Jacqueline comes in and asks for a show of hands.

Everyone in the room raises their hand, except Jane. Jacqueline tells Sage that she has her assignment for the month. Porn, love it or hate it. However, now they need someone to cover her sex column for the month. Jacqueline then tells Jane she’s covering the column. Jane tells Jacqueline that she has a political piece she wanted to pitch to her and Jacqueline tells Jane that can wait, they need a sex column. Sage pipes up that they haven’t had a “best orgasm piece” in a while and Jacqueline tells Jane that’s great and she looks forward to it. Jane, on the other hand, looks really uncomfortable for some reason. Jacqueline asks Alex for his pitch and he says: “Spooning or forking. Which one makes you hungrier?” We really want to go to these meetings!

Kat is meeting with Lauren (Emily Chang) about social media topics. She tells her the response to their sexual health campaign has been good and bad. The links are being heavily read, but not retweeted. Lauren tells her that people just don’t want to retweet stories about genital herpes. Lauren asked about the Adena piece and asked Kat to do a follow-up. Kat tells Lauren that Adena deleted all of her social media accounts so she’s been really hard to reach, but she’s working on it.

Sutton approaches Lauren about wanting to apply for a promotion. She tells her that she was a business econ major in college, but hasn’t had the chance to explore the business side of the magazine. Lauren tells Sutton that she’s impressed because most girls come to work there with unrealistic dreams and she’d be glad to get some informational meetings set up for her. Lauren then asks Richard (Sam Page) to talk with Sutton about the business side of the magazine. Sutton, at first, says that Richard has to be too busy to meet with her but Lauren tells her that she has to be better about speaking up for herself. Richard says that he’ll be happy to meet with Sutton. Oh boy, this could be interesting.

Kat is trying to call Adena but learns that her number has been disconnected. So, now she has absolutely no way to contact her. The girls meet in their favorite spot in the office, the fashion closet. Jane tells them that Jacqueline wants her to do a best orgasm piece. Sutton says that those are fun and Kat says that it’s her worst nightmare in the best possible way. Jane says that she can’t write it and Kat tells her that she can. Kat says to just open a bottle of gin, chase it with nothing and start typing.

Sutton then asks Jane who her best orgasm was ever? It had to be Eric, right? Jane says no. Kat says it doesn’t surprise her and she can get the job done better herself. Sutton says that men are a letdown and you have to train them. Then, Sutton tells them that speaking of the men she’s trained, Lauren cornered Richard into giving her an informational interview later. Kat asks Sutton when she’s just going to admit that she wants to work in fashion. Sutton says that everyone wants to work in fashion, but it requires talent. Kat tells her that she has talent. Kat also blurts out that she had a sex dream about Adena last night. What?

Jane yells that she can’t write the story because she’s never had an orgasm before. Sutton says that she’s going to need a more description of never and Kat says like not even with yourself? Jane says like the basic description of the word never! Kat tells Jane she’s being hostile and Sutton says she can be hostile she’s never had an orgasm before. These three crack us up! Jane says she feels like a fraud because everyone is having the most amazing sex ever and she can’t tell Jacqueline she’s not.

Jane says she just has to figure out a way to have an orgasm. Kat tells Jane, let’s make it happen and Sutton says that she’s loving the can do spirit. Kat’s a problem solver and obviously a really good friend! Kat tells Jane she needs to call her gyno to rule out anything physiological and Jane asks if she thinks it’s something like that. She says no, she thinks Jane is stuck in her own head, but it’s better to rule that all out just to be sure. Jane instantly gets a message from Jacqueline that she wants her to come to her office and wonders if she has the office bugged.

Kat gets word that there is someone at the front desk for her. It’s Adena. She greets her with a huge hug. Adena (Nikohl Boosheri) tells her that she received death threats and heard that immigration officers were looking through Muslims phones so she ditched hers. She tells Kat that she received her picture and she touched her heart, too. Kat tells Adena that her article was really popular and they’d like to do a follow up if she could sit down with one of the writers, probably Alex. Adena tells her she doesn’t have time now, but invites Kat and Alex to her show that she’s having later in the week.

Jane goes to see Jacqueline and Jacqueline tells Jane that she looked terrified this morning and she looks terrified now. She asks Jane if the sex column makes her uncomfortable. Jane tells her that she’s excited to stretch herself as a writer. Jane tells her there’s a lot of pressure and she wants to live up to her expectations. Jacqueline tells her to make the article her own and make it personal. She tells her not to try to do what Sage does because very few can do what Sage does.

Sutton has her meeting with Richard and when she walks in he says: “Mr. Grey will see you now.” We have to admit he is pretty funny. Sutton doesn’t think so and tells him as much. He pretty much tells her that if they weren’t in a glass conference room he’d take her then and there. Sutton isn’t really taking the meeting seriously because of their current relationship, but Richard tells her it doesn’t have to be that way. There’s no reason that he can’t set up an interview for her. He tells her there is an opening in ad sales and he thinks she’d be perfect for it.

Jane gets a call from her doctor and tries to explain what’s going on. She goes in the elevator to get privacy, but her cell signal is weak. Jane ends up yelling into the phone “problem with my vagina” right when the elevator doors open and there’s a guy standing there. Talk about embarrassing. He knows who she is, too. It’s Ryan (Dan Jeannotte) from Pinstripe, the author of the screw like a porn star article and Jane is not impressed with him. When she gets off the elevator he follows and asks her what she’s working on now and she ignores him. Ryan tells her it was nice meeting her and tells her that he hopes her vag is okay. Jane looks like she’s going to die and rightfully so!

Alex is trying to find Kat about the Adena article and asks Sutton if she knows where she is. Sutton asks him if she looks like Kat’s assistant. Alex tells her no but she does look like someone who knows where Adena is at all times. Alex asks Sutton what she’s up to and she tells him probably nothing, but says that there’s a position in ad sales she’s thinking about going for. Alex says that he didn’t know that was something she was interested in. She tells him it’s not her dream job, but the compensation package is amazing.

Kat takes Jane to a sexologist for help with her problem. The doctor asks Jane if Kat is her girlfriend and Jane tells her no that they’re both straight. Kat takes that opportunity to make it about her and her sexuality identity issues she’s having. Jane interrupts her and says she can take care of that on her own time, they’re there for her. Jane wants to know what exactly a sexologist does and the doctor tells her that she will give her some exercises to complete to help. Kat tells Jane that she’s totally into this.

The doctor asks Jane if she’s ever heard of a Yoni Egg and Kat says yes, while Jane just looks disgusted. Jane says it’s an infection waiting to happen. The doctor tells Jane if she wants to have an orgasm she has to find her inner freak. Next, the girls are having a porn watching party. Sutton tells them that she has a job interview the next day in ad sales. Jane asks why she isn’t going for something in fashion and Sutton says there’s no money in it. Kat tells Sutton that ad sales is kind of boring and puts on a little girl on girl action.

Sutton turns to Kat and tells her that she’s talking about changing the course of her whole future and all she can say is ad sales is kind of boring? Sutton tells her it’s a good job. Kat asks her if it’s what she wants to do with the rest of her life. Sutton tells them she’s leaving, she has a job interview the next day and she can’t stay up all night watching porn. At Richard’s later that night Sutton can’t sleep and he tries to comfort her. Sutton tells Richard about putting $100 bill in an envelope in her purse that she carries around with her. It’s enough to buy a train ticket home if she fails. She tells him if she gets the job she’s going to spend it.

Jane is still watching porn and tries office romance for a search. She pictures herself with Ryan. Guess you like him more than you thought. She’s also rethought the Yoni Egg. Kat and Sutton are making up in the break room, or trying to, and Jane keeps calling both of them. Finally, Kat answers and Jane tells Kat not to hang up. She tells Kat that she tried the Yoni Egg and it’s stuck! Jane tells her to meet her in the fashion closet immediately. When Jane gets in the elevator, Ryan is already aboard. He’s happy, she’s not. Ryan tells her that she seems a little tense. Jane tells him that he needs to focus on what a woman needs in bed and tell his readers how to do that. Ryan just smiles and Jane asks him why he’s smiling. Ryan tells her that she hasn’t read his articles at all and there’s also nothing he finds sexier than a woman who speaks her mind.

The girls are basically flipping for who is going to retrieve Jane’s Yoni Egg. Sutton says she can’t do it because she has an interview and she can’t have her hand up there an hour before she has to shake it with the entire ad sales team. So, Kat, you’re up! Just like at the doctor’s office, Kat tells Jane to slide down to her and then says the female form is quite beautiful. Jane tells Kat it’d really help if she didn’t narrate. Kat tells Jane she has to relax or she’s not going to be able to get the egg. Sutton starts telling Jane a story about being on a beach and Kat says she thinks she has it, she can feel it, then Sutton says: “This is the worst Easter egg hunt ever!” Finally, the egg is out. While washing her hands, Kat tells Jane she’s realized she’s not a lesbian. Jane then throws the egg to Kat.

The article is not going well because Jane still hasn’t been able to have an orgasm. Tonight is Adena’s show so they’re all headed there, but Jane has to finish the article first. Jane takes her article to Jacqueline and asks her if she can publish anonymously and Jacqueline tells her no. There’s a reason they don’t do that and she doesn’t want to change it. Jane reluctantly agrees and hands her article over. Jacqueline glances at it and looks up at Jane and says never? Jane shakes her head no and Jacqueline tells her that she’ll give it a read.

The girls head to Adena’s show and there is the picture that Kat originally sent to her that says “Misunderstood” in the show. Ryan is at the show and Jane asks Alex if she’s following her. Alex tells her that he’s reviewing the show for Pinstripe and he’s actually a pretty good writer. Jane decides she needs a drink and Kat goes with her. Sutton’s phone rings and she tells Alex it’s a work call and she has to take it. Richard is on the phone and tells Sutton that she got the job. Sutton tells Alex that she got the job, but Alex asks her what her dream is. She tells him it’s fashion but she can’t afford to fail. Alex tells her that he gets it, but she gets to have a dream, too.

Jacqueline calls Jane and tells her that she read the article and she needs her to take another pass. Jacqueline says she sees facts and figures, but she doesn’t see Jane anywhere. Jacqueline tells her she will let her write the article anonymously if she writes the article from her heart and not her head. Kat finally gets the courage to go talk to Adena when she sees another woman come up and kiss her. Sutton and Jane tell Kat that they’re sorry and they wish they could be more like her.

Jane walks over to Ryan and asks him if he’s been flirting with her. He says yes so she kisses him. Jane then tells him she has to go. Way to leave him hanging. When Kat finally talks to Adena she tells her how amazing the show is and that she’s honored to be in it. Alex and Sutton go to have a drink and she orders an expensive bottle of champagne. Alex tells her congratulations on her new job and Sutton tells him that she’s not taking the job. He asks what they’re celebrating then and she says “crazy dreams.” Sutton then takes the envelope with the $100 bill that she’s had in her purse for four years out to pay for their drinks.

Jane turns in her second pass of her article to Jacqueline. This time Jacqueline loves it and wants to put it on the digital site immediately. Jane wants to make a change first, she wants to publish it under her name. She walks out of Jacqueline’s office with her head held high, proud of what she’s done, knowing that others are proud of her too. Jane is finally owning her own sexuality, even though it’s a little different than everyone else’s. That’s what makes you fierce.
