The Girl And The Dreamcatcher – Negatives

Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) Well, we’re definitely still finding our sound as artists…In terms of the songs we’ve already released on Negatives, we love lots of air but also walls of sound, ultimately resulting in a building of tension for the listener. We love songs that sound like feelings and swells with mixes of natural and electronic elements. The fact that we have two voices to play with definitely contributes to a texturally interesting sound that we vibe with.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) We love Ellie Goulding, Flume, Imagine Dragons, The Chainsmokers, Disclosure and Tegan and Sara.

Q) What is the song writing process like for you? Do you need music before you create the lyrics?

A) The songwriting process is different every time. Sometimes lyrics come first and sometimes it’s the melody!

Q) What have been some of the fans favorite songs off the EP?

A) We’ve been taking note of what the fans have been responding to! We even took a Twitter poll to see which was their favorite. The highest voted was “My Way,” but the most talked about have been “Gladiator,” “Monster” and “Cry Wolf,” which are all four of the new tracks. So, as you can imagine we’re pretty happy artists over here!

Q) What do you think it is about your new song “My Way” that fans are really connecting to?

A) We think that “My Way” has been the ones fans have connected most to because of its relatability! You don’t have to be in single, taken, young or old to want to do things your own way. And a lot of our fans are at an age where they are just starting to experience that pull of society that tells them to do things THEIR way. So, it seems it has been received as a bit of an anthem for following your own heart and making your own individual choices, which is exactly why we wrote it. We feel that need too!

Q) How much of a hand do you personally have in the production of your music?

A) We don’t produce our own songs (yet!), but we have a pretty good hand in the production. We will get a mix back and pour over notes and descriptions and “yes’s” and “no’s” until it sounds EXACTLY the way we envisioned it. So, pretty hands on.

Q) What are some of your favorite songs off Negatives?

A) As artists, probably “Gladiator” because it took the most time and effort and we fought the most for it. As people, probably “My Way” or “Cry Wolf” because there is lots of personal stuff in there. Or “Gladiator” or “Monster!” Honestly, we’re very proud of the whole EP.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) Any of our listed influencers above! They’re our influencers, but we’re also (naturally) huge fans! Oh, and Macklemore.

Q) What can fans do to help promote your music?

A) Our incredible fans have honestly already done so much! Using #NegativesEP and tagging our socials @TGATDC and @Thegirlandthedreamcatcher so that we can interact with you is always a big plus. And, obviously, continuing to buy and support our music and videos is never a bad idea! But like we said – our fans are what got us here. They’ve already done so much. We love you guys!

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) Social media is one of the most important parts of this job at this point not just because you have to use it to stay relevant, but also because it allows you to connect to your fans in a way that was never possible before! Who wouldn’t want to hear it directly from their fans that they want to hear more ___ in the next song? Or they need merchandise? Or just that they’re having a great day and they hope we are, too? It’s important to us to stay connected. Our fans are our world.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) We want to say an endless amount of THANK YOU’s to our incredible fan base who got us to where we are is independent artists. Our fans are the reason for everything that we do and we are incredibly grateful for their dedication. Thank you for getting us #2 on the iTunes pop charts, for coming to the shows, for making the signs, for just existing! We love you! Keep catching dreams!
