WHY SHOULD I WATCH?
A Comedy of Gamers is a brand new five-episode web series about a group of gamers and an AI gaming assistant, Cyndi (Orla Sanders), training them to be better. Edmund (Olly Jackson) is convinced he’s been promoted to Pro League in Warlock World and Cyndi is merely a guide for the best of the best. However, he quickly learns he couldn’t be more wrong; it’s actually the exact opposite. Edmund and his group he reluctantly calls “friends” are actually so bad that they’ve been chosen for a private beta test to help them improve. Cyndi has their best interest in mind, but only when it comes to leveling up. She forces 3am wake up calls for them to practice and play and never shies away from bluntly telling them just how bad they are, ignoring how inhumane it is. She is computer generated after all.
As each character is introduced, you’re informed of their play style, ranging from casual to brutal, and by the end of the first episode you get a very good feel for who they are. Andy (Jon Beck) is, to put it simply, the biggest mess of the group. This also makes him the most entertaining. Beck fully commits to the absolute ridiculous nature of his character and manages to be the zany comedic relief while still remaining believable as a real person. There’s some fun physical comedy in the series, too, which Beck shines at. Watching him get a pitcher of water dumped on his head after foolishly eating something called “Mongolian Death Curry” was definitely a highlight for me.
There are currently only two episodes available to watch, with new ones released every Saturday, and they’re both worth checking out. If you’re a fan of any kind of roleplaying game, online or tabletop, you’ll definitely be a fan of A Comedy of Gamers. There are subtleties in the humor that dedicated gamers will find especially amusing, but fans of comedy in general should find the series enjoyable as well.
