What? The Leslie Series

Who? Created, written and directed by: Kate Johnson. Starring: Kate Johnson, Ruby Goldin, Diana Spieller, Daniel Luna and Chris Hallett.

Why Should I Watch? The world is always in need of a comedic coming out story and Leslie’s is just that. After coming to the realization that she is gay, Leslie (Kate Johnson) tries to figure out how to maneuver this new life and make it work. From testing out snapbacks to wandering over to the nearest watering hole’s only ladies night, Leslie sure as hell has her work cut out for her.

With the help of her best friends, who have no idea what they’re doing either, Leslie puts herself out there and really just hopes for the best. Written from her own experience, Johnson says that a lot of what we see are conversations or incidents have happened at one point in another in her own coming out, making them that much more fun to play out on screen. The 12-episode series is already winning viewers over with its bi-weekly airings and quick and witty one-liners. Next to Leslie, another fan favorite is Paulie (Ruby Goldin) who brings the sass and says the things straight friends are often too shy to say.

The writing is fluid and doesn’t give off the vibe that anything is too forced or over the top. Johnson does an amazing job at capturing what it’s like being fresh out of the closet and while the story is about Leslie, Johnson does a great job at having other characters have their moment to shine as well. For those who have yet to watch, I won’t spoil much but I will say there’s a lovely ship hashtag already sailing about the internet and you’d do good to jump on it as well!
