Younger – No Weddings and a Funeral

This episode begins somberly with everyone attending Thad’s funeral. During the middle of the service, Liza (Sutton Foster) turns to Maggie (Debi Mazar), saying she’s made the decision to tell Kelsey everything. She thinks her lie has gone too far. Maggie isn’t sure this is such a good idea. Kelsey just lost her fiancée. Is now really the right time for her to find out her best friend has been lying to her?

Josh (Nico Tortorella) walks in, taking a seat behind Liza. The service starts and the priest calls Thad’s identical twin brother Chad (Dan Amboyer) up to say a few words.

After the service, Liza and Maggie go look at some of the photos in the church lobby. They can’t get over the fact that Thad had a twin. Lauren (Molly Bernard) informs them that the two of them were so different—Thad a complete playboy while Chad is a little dorky.

Liza goes to check up on Kelsey (Hilary Duff). She says the funeral weirdly feels like her wedding because all the same people are in attendance, except for a group of mystery girls who seem to be avoiding her. Kelsey says she hasn’t been able to cry about it yet, but Liza assures her she’s probably still just in shock. Kelsey tells Liza she should be the one in shock since she actually saw it happen. She begins to ask Liza why she was there, but the two are interrupted by Chad.

Chad asks Liza if she will file charges against the construction company with him. He then asks Kelsey if he knows the password to Thad’s computer in order to access some information. Liza offers to take the laptop to the IT department, but Chad refuses. He wants to access it first to delete some photos and browser history—just for security reasons, of course. He then gives Kelsey a lingering hug, sniffing her hair in the process.

Josh comes up to Liza as she’s pouring a glass of wine. He tells her she looks great, but Liza says she’s seen some cute pictures of him and Greta. Josh says all he’s wanted to do since he heard the news was be there to support her. She admits she’s been thinking a lot about him lately, too. Josh asks her if she wants to be sad together and they run to his apartment.

Liza makes a pun about “mourning sex” and Josh admits he’s been tempted to go apologize to her multiple times. Liza tells him he has nothing to be sorry about—she’s the one who was selfish. Her little lie has gone too far, spiraling out of control.

Just then, Greta knocks on Josh’s bedroom door. Liza is insulted that she has a key to his apartment when Liza never did. Josh makes Liza hop out the window and onto the fire escape so he doesn’t get caught cheating. Liza rolls her eyes upon seeing Josh and Greta making out through the window.

The next day at work, Diana (Miriam Shor) tells Liza they need to soldier on—the time for sadness is over. She informs her that they have a meeting with Stephanie Smith, one of the biggest celebrity astrologers on the planet. With Kelsey still grieving, Liza is going to need to pick up her slack. However, they are surprised to see Kelsey walk into the office.

Liza asks Kelsey if she’s sure she wants to come back so soon. Kelsey says that work is the only thing that will keep her sane. She also feels horrible for not being able to cry about Thad yet. Diana cuts their conversation short, saying they don’t want to keep Stephanie waiting.

Diana is extremely impressed with Stephanie’s (Dolly Wells) book pitch about the astronomy of love. Kelsey isn’t sold. She makes a snarky comment about whether dying by a piece of construction equipment was in Thad’s charts before storming out, announcing she can’t sell people the idea that they can predict their lives.

Liza follows her, asking if she’s alright. A frustrated Kelsey says she can’t put up with the fairytale notions anymore. Chad walks in, saying they got surveillance video from across the street. It shows Thad and Liza arguing, ending with Liza ripping her arm from his grasp. Kelsey demands to know what they were fighting about and Liza asks Chad to give them some privacy. Chad, ominously, says he still has his computer and will eventually find out everything before giving Kelsey an awkward kiss on the lips and leaving.

Liza spills, admitting that she found out Thad was having an affair with his assistant. She wanted to tell her, but she was trying to convince Chad to do the right thing. Instead of being upset at the news, Kelsey is livid at Liza. She asks who made her the morality police, saying not everyone is perfect and can live up to her expectations. Kelsey has to make her own mistakes, even if that means marrying the wrong guy. Kelsey coldly implies that maybe if Liza hadn’t interfered, Thad would still be alive.

After the harsh accusations from Kelsey, Liza makes the snap decision to quit her job. She tells Diana she got an offer elsewhere and feels like she has to accept it—today will be her last day at Empirical. She thanks her for everything she’s done, tearing up. Diana looks shocked and disappointed by the news.

The next day, Diana gets a new, overly perky temp named Becky (Carly Brooke). She peppily hands Diana a latte, compliments her necklace and generally talks too much about things Diana hates. Diana is predictably miserable.

Liza sends Kelsey an email explaining that, although she quit, she still loves her and will always be her friend. Diana demands to know where Liza is, but Kelsey doesn’t know. Charles (Peter Hermann) overhears this, saying he’s going to make some calls and find out why Liza suddenly left. Kelsey shoots her an email begging her to get in touch.

Liza’s old pal Michelle (Heidi Armbruster) has gotten her a new job working retail at the Paramus Mall. Michelle pumps her up, saying not only will she meet so many age-appropriate men, but they can also meet on her lunch breaks and use her employee discount in three months. Liza’s boss snobbishly tells her there’s a stack of returns that need folded once she’s done gabbing.

Later, Liza tells Maggie that her first day at work was actually rather relaxing, but Maggie isn’t buying it. She notes that Liza seemed more authentic when she was pretending to be twenty-six years old. Plus, she doesn’t understand how she can give up on her dreams so easily. Liza defends herself, saying she’s just facing reality.

At the mall, Liza runs into Lauren’s mom (Kathy Najimy) who is shopping at her store. Liza asks her to keep quiet about the fact she’s now working retail. Lauren’s mom invites her to dinner, telling her not to be a stranger just because she changed careers. Liza promises she will before sadly watching her walk away, already nostalgic about her old life.

Kelsey runs into Diana’s office where she and Charles are discussing where Liza could be. Kelsey informs them she is working at a New Jersey department store, but she can’t get Liza to talk to her. Diana refuses to go to New Jersey so Charles offers to drive down to try and win her back.

Charles comes up to where Liza is sorting ties. He says that when you’re young, you can have the tendency to blame yourself for things that aren’t your fault. Liza thanks him for his kind words, but isn’t sure she can return. He tells Liza to at least think about coming back because they desperately want her. He then kisses her, telling her to think about that too while she’s at it. Dumbfounded, she promises to give it a lot of thought.

The next day, Diana is delighted to have Liza hand her coffee instead of Becky. Of course, she doesn’t let Liza see that, telling her to straighten up her desk as they have a lot of catching up to do. Liza then visits Kelsey’s office, who runs into her arms for a hug. She finally begins to cry, making Liza promise never to disappear on her again.

On Liza’s walk home, she spies Josh sitting on his steps. Josh informs her that he broke up with Greta. Giving her a kiss, he says that he’s all-in their relationship.
