5 Theories on Wynonna Earp Season 3
By: Maggie Stankiewicz
On June 8th, 2018 the patriarchy-smashing original series “Wynonna Earp” debuted the trailer for the show’s heavily anticipated third season. If Season Two of “Wynonna Earp” was a dish best served on Edwin Earp’s 1952 Purgatory Fair plate, then Season Three is a dish best served in a reinforced potato sack. Throughout its one minute and thirty-eight second duration, this teaser dials up the heartbreak, the sisterly love, the intrigue and the gore to an all-time high. Featuring all of its core cast, the “Wynonna Earp” Season Three trailer suggests another rocky road ahead for our merry band of misfits.
Assuming that you haven’t been afflicted by a memory spell that rendered you incapable of remembering the life altering events that transpired in last season’s finale, you probably entered this trailer with one-hundred questions and left with a hundred more. How long did Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) know where Mama Earp was hiding? Why was Nicole (Katherine Barrell) crying at the sound of Bulshar’s name? What was up with that silent exchange between Haught and Dolls (Shamier Anderson)? These questions have more than likely metamorphized into enquiries about Jeremy’s (Varun Saranga) moustache, Bulshar’s hat, demon fairy dust and why Waverly Earp (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) is constantly thrown into peril.
Unfortunately, we will be unable to make our peace with these breadcrumbs until Season Three airs…but we will be able to speculate. And speculate we will! Much like the earpiest Earp of them all, we’ve thrust ourselves into the dusty stacks of the digital library, tirelessly analyzing each and every second of this initial trailer. We’ve left no rock unturned, no potato un-licked. Emily Andras & Co. have brought on the heat so it’s time to see what makes this taco so damn tasty. Without further ado, we present to you five blossoming theories on what’s to come in Season Three of “Wynonna Earp.”
Theory One: Prodigal Mom Returns
Mama Earp (Megan Follows) gifted the world with more than just the Earp sisters. In the Season Two finale she delivered a chilling, poignant monologue on the threats to come. This cemented her importance to the characters and the audience alike, but I have the feeling that mommy dearest will be integral to Season Three’s plot and the looming battle ahead. The trailer shows Wynonna and Mama Earp standing side by side and later shows Mama Earp alone, scared, behind the shaking barrel of Peacemaker. Peacemaker’s shaft isn’t glowing with its typical molten-etchings, but will it fire for Wynonna’s mother when she needs it most? We watched Peacemaker obey Wynonna’s wishes to fire when Waverly was the shooter. Was this a one-time event or is Peacemaker’s bond to Wynonna anthropomorphizing it? If Peacemaker will shoot for a half-sister, I’m betting it’ll shoot for a full-blooded mama.
Mama Earp’s presence will surely make waves on the homestead. Abandonment and demonic affairs all have a way of catching up to even the most resilient families, but I predict she will cause a rift between Waverly and Wynonna. We got a taste of their fragility when Willa (Natalie Krill) came into the picture and though the sisters have strengthened their bond since then, there is a lifetime of secrets yet to be uncovered. Mama Earp will undoubtedly play an important role in defeating the latest demonic foe. But Wynonna Earp has never been a show about defeating literal monsters as there are always inner demons biding their time, waiting to come out and play. Mama Earp is a wealth of answers that we’ve been desperately looking for – Waverly’s father, Wynonna’s past and a codex of Earp family history. Let’s just hope that the bullet we see flying at Wynonna’s face was not a shot fired by the family matriarch.
Theory Two: Too Much Testosterone
Or too much alkalinity? We have to ask Jeremy for the formula. Either way, it’s looking like Wynonna’s main men, Doc (Tim Rozon) and Dolls, are going to be in the midst of their own unique power struggles.
We see Dolls holding a vial of his mystical tonic, irises set ablaze. Rosita (Tamara Duarte) has fled for her life (literally), but did she take with her the secrets of his dragon tonic? Given Jeremy’s intelligence, I doubt this is likely; however, there is trouble afoot with the demon inside of Dolls. The desperation in his eyes suggests that he’s hungry for his magical cocktail – is he addicted? There is a possibility that the synthetic drugs constantly coursing through Dolls’ veins have caused him to build up a tolerance. In Riley Finn fashion, Dolls may very-well deteriorate without his military-sanctioned dope. His longing gaze is first step he takes into a descending spiral of animosity and hot sauce breath. Jeremy will be unable to reproduce the mixture at the rate Dolls consumes it and soon one of their own will turn on them. A hot-headed wild card to throw the gang of right before their rendezvous with Bulshar.
Speaking of Bulshar…it looks like Doc has gotten his hand on the demon’s ring – the very ring that Dolls entrusted with Nicole Haught. We all know how much Doc loves his rings, especially when they’re enchanted. Judging by the gunman’s furrowed brow and stance within an occult-esque looking circle, it might be safe to assume that the sweet mistress known has evil has appealed to his self-serving inclinations and caused a momentary lapse of judgment. Doc just endured the pain of sending his daughter away and is now facing mortality without that reminder of his legacy. How will this affect our mustachioed Casanova? It’s not looking so good. Even if it’s just for a few moments, I suspect that Doc will retreat into his own darkness and inadvertently help the demon in his world dominating endeavors.
Theory Three: One Potato, Two Potato
This is the moment you’ve been waiting for…an exploration of the infamous spud. There are more theories on the potato’s significance than there are ways to cook potatoes. Will we be introduced to a demon that thrives on complex carbs? Does Bulshar’s fairy dust transport everyone into a dream world à la Buffy’s Restless, bringing us to another “I wear the cheese. It does not wear me” moment? The simple answer is no. To put it simple, the potato scene is the subtle destruction of the fourth wall. The Potato Licker is us, the Earpers. The potato is the delicious, dynamic, complex plot lines that we’ve come to associate with “Wynonna Earp,” more specifically the geometrically shaped love shared between Doc, Dolls and Wynonna.
In 1964, Larry Peerce directed a film called One Potato, Two Potato about a Midwestern mother driven to take the tough steps necessary to provide her newborn daughter with a safe environment. This is Wynonna and Alice. In the film, the mother relocates and secures her divorce from the father. Given that Doc and Wynonna were smooching two different people in the trailer, it’s safe to assume they’ve divorced themselves as well. In One Potato, Two Potato, the young mother then meets and falls in love with a man who is one of her coworkers. This is surely a sign that Wynonna will finally allow herself to fully experience her feelings for Dolls. Consequently, the film’s young mother is then confronted by her child’s father and a family-defining power struggle ensues in what appears to be an uphill battle for all protagonists. If you don’t see the potato’s importance by now I don’t know how much more theorizing it’s going to take. Earpers ARE the Potato Licker. The potato is the show, which we voraciously lick and then consume.
Theory Four: OccultTP
Are Wayhaught, the OTP of the masses, fooling around with the dark arts?! Nicole Haught is almost perfect. The tall Ginger Poptart has captured everyone’s heart, including Waverly Earp’s yet she’s no Mary Sue. Nicole Haught has one flaw. And though it’s shared by almost every character on Wynonna Earp, it could be detrimental. Nicole Haught doesn’t talk about her past and she keeps secrets. The Season Two finale left Earpers questioning Nicole’s intentions. From her knowing, silent tears at the sound of Bulshar’s to that look she shared with Dolls – there’s we don’t know…but we can take a wild guess. Nicole Haught is a Cult of Bulshar escapee and this season her past has caught up to her. We see Nicole at the scene of a crime, a small pile of bodies behind her. There is something defensive and sinister in her typically earnest eyes. It’s anger, it’s fear and it’s the ghost of her former life becoming a poltergeist.
Waverly isn’t the only member of WayHaught with some sinister secrets under her hat. The trailer only grants us a passing glance at Waverly, Nicole and an unidentified assailant in the barn. Waverly sweeps her arm through the air and the man is thrown backwards as Nicole looks on – horrified. Waverly Earp, she with an unknown paternal figure, is inherently magical. Those unexplored dark corners that we heard about last season have awakened, either from age or by Bulshar’s presence and powers have manifested. We know that Waverly is not half Revenant, but her magic is looking a lot like the Constance Clootie’s telekinetic assaults. Waverly Earp may be a witch in the making, and season three will truly show us what she’s made out of.
Theory Five: Bulshar Got A Facial
We remember the moist, flaking, abscessed skin of Bulshar when his wives were tending to him, but we never got a glimpse of his human form…until now. The older gentleman with a hat that would strike envy deep in the heart of Doc Holliday is Bulshar and he’s got more than just power – he’s got magic tricks. Bulshar will confuse and disorient Doc, Wynonna, Waverly and all those who traverse through the snowy forest. We watch as he ruins Doc’s perfect shot record, as he sends Wynonna into a strange hibernation through the thicket and possibly…while he drags a screaming Waverly through the snow, painting the landscape crimson. We watch him blow dust into the faces of our heroes, instill fear into the West’s steadiest hands and send super heroes to their knees. Bulshar may look like an average man, but he’s an extraordinary terror, with an army of followers behind him.
