Grey’s Anatomy – Odd Man Out

The hospital is buzzing with doctors and patients, as usual, but this suddenly gives Dr. Webber (James Pickens, Jr.) a reason to pause. He looks around, taking everything in, and then heads off to see Bailey (Chandra Wilson). He tells her that he wants to meet with the residents immediately. When everyone is gathered around, he tells them that when a patient lays in one place too long they get a bed sores. Thus, each of them that they have “snuggled up to their specialties like a warm comfy bed” so he is now their alarm clock and pulling them out of their bed and broadening their education. They will now do a Resident Scramble, picking names out of a hat to find out which doctor’s service they will be on that day.

Names drawn, each resident heads out to face their new doctor. Jo (Camilla Luddington) is now on Meredith’s service (Ellen Pompeo). Callie (Sara Ramirez) is busy downloading her on the status of last week’s patient and then says Thorpe (Scott Elrod) wondered if Meredith had given out the wrong number. Maggie (Kelly McCreary) is confused and Callie explains that the two exchanged digits. Of course, that’s when Meredith notices Wilson is there and wonders why she is scrubbing in. Jo explains about the Resident Scramble and Meredith shoos her off to go get the case information from Blake (Samantha Sloyan) since she doesn’t have time to get her up to speed. Breaking the tension, Maggie wants to know how hot Thorpe actually is.

Meanwhile, Jackson (Jesse Williams) is talking to Karev (Justin Chambers) about a recent date he had. He says it was nice, but he doesn’t know if he is getting out there. Karev wonders if Kepner (Sarah Drew) knows and Jackson assures her that he’ll tell her eventually and for Karev not to share. He’ll tell her when the time is right. Edwards arrives and wonders why there are dogs making noises in the Pediatric Unit. Karev explains that once a month they come in to boost morale for the patients. Edwards says she is on their service today and Karev says he hopes she likes dogs.

In an elevator, Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Riggs (Martin Henderson) are headed to surgery with a patient who had driven his car into an electric fence. Hunt (Kevin McKidd) grabs the door in time to tell Amelia he has made reservations at a fancy restaurant for their first date. With Riggs listening into the conversation, it isn’t clear if he is jealous of Hunt or just nosey. Blake arrives to let Shepherd know that the patient’s wife is downstairs. Amelia wonders why Blake is there and she explains about the resident mixing. Amelia isn’t having it though and tells Blake to “tell Dr. Webber I said ‘no.’”

Bailey, Warren, Robbins and DeLuca are hovering over a patient named Courtney (Casey Wilson) who is on bedrest because she is having quadruplets. She is also Bailey’s accountant. Warren (Jason George) and Bailey begin discussing their finances when Courtney’s husband interrupts (thankfully) with a gift basket for them. They are thankful that they have kept all their babies safe and healthy.

Downstairs, Riggs and Shepherd are talking to the wife of their electric fence driver. They are explaining to her about their surgery. Amelia tells her that her husband will be awake soon and the woman says he isn’t her husband. On cue, a woman gets out of the elevators saying she’s actually the wife and that this woman is really his mistress. The real wife wants to know how her husband is and if he is dead. She explains she doesn’t want to see him unless he is dead. Wow. And this is a just the first five minutes of the episode!

Arizona heads over to Kepner to check in on her. Kepner says that she is twelve weeks along and Arizona wonders if she’s told Jackson yet. Kepner says no, but Arizona worries that she is trying to do this alone. Kepner asserts that she is fine because she isn’t alone – she has Dr. Robbins. Arizona tells her that’s fine, but then they should do some tests to check on the baby’s health. April refuses. With what she has gone through last time, Arizona doesn’t want her to have to repeat what happened. April won’t agree and just continues to believe that her baby will be fine.

While performing surgery, Callie, Meredith and Maggie are talking about Thorpe again. Meredith says she can hear what they are saying and Callie jokes that she can hear them talking, but not her phone ringing. Maggie wonders if Meredith has “her ringer off” – as in her libido. Maggie says that sometimes you forget your ringer has been off for so long that you need someone to help you turn it back on. Callie giggles and says that she really thinks that is the case. Meredith thinks the call will be too awkward. Jo interrupts to say that saw all of Grey’s patients and wants to scrub in. Meredith asks if she took care of draining a patient’s wound and when she says no, Meredith says, “Okay, Blake. Go get that done.” Wilson corrects her and then runs off to take care of the patient. Callie says, “See, you’re mixing up your residents. You need to get that ringer turned back on.”

Warren is giving Courtney an ultrasound and when he can’t find “Baby C” he tells DeLuca (Giacomo Giannotti) to go get Robbins. Meanwhile, Amelia is ripping into Blake for the wife mixup earlier. Amelia can’t understand why Blake is still there and she says that Webber rejected her return. Amelia suggests her taking the day off, but Blake assures her Webber rejected that as well. Mrs. McCall (the incomparable Rita Moreno) says any pacemaker info can be given to the side piece so she can change his diaper. She says if he dies while they are still married then she gets half of his fortune. She is waiting him out. Back with Courtney’s case, Arizona is able to locate Baby C and notices that he’s actually ready to come out of the womb. Papa Quadruplet (Jay Ali) doesn’t want the baby born yet because it is too early. Robbins explains she is going to try some typical tricks to “help stop the boulder” – a/k/a/ prevent Baby C being born just yet.

Amelia talks with Mr. McCall’s mistress because he seems to not remember her at all. The actual wife rushes to his side when he starts adamantly requesting her. It seems like he has traveled back in time to when they first fell in love. Amelia assures the mistress that behavior like this is not uncommon to someone who has suffered head trauma.

Dr. Warren is talking to Courtney about his taxes to distract her. Courtney tells him that Bailey makes a lot more money these days and she goes over all of their financial options. Arizona heads off though to look in on Kepner again. Arizona asks Kepner if she trusts her because she can feel the boulder (still with this analogy) starting to roll so she needs to let her examine her and she needs to tell Jackson about the baby. Kepner explains she is a doctor so she isn’t stupid, but doesn’t want certain tests. Arizona wants her to have a healthy baby, but their conversation is interrupted by DeLuca who says that Baby C is still trying to escape.

Somewhere in a bathroom Jo, Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) and Blake are commiserating. Edwards has been peed on by dogs all day and Jo is having issues – per usual – with Meredith. Having had enough of Jo’s constant Grey chatter, Edwards only gives her ten more seconds to vent. After using it unwisely, Edwards cuts her off saying “never again.”

Karev shows up to Courtney’s room trying to help her give birth to the baby. Courtney balks though because Dr. Robbins is the doctor in charge of keeping him in. Karev explains that Baby C (Charles is his future name) has made up his mind to come out so once that happens they all have to come out. Courtney turns her attentions to Robbins saying she wants them all to live. Robbins only wants them to set up for one birth though.

Back in an elevator, Riggs heads to McCall’s room with Amelia. Riggs wants to know why she is so hard on Blake and Amelia explains that it is personal. She says she will let him form his own conclusions about Blake to which he tells her that because she’s so tight with Hunt that he’s sure she’s formed some of her own conclusions about him. Mr. McCall is acting lovey dovey with his wife when Blake observes there is something wrong. She says he needs a procedure and Riggs wants her to do it. Blake asserts Sheppard told her that she isn’t allowed to touch the patient, but Riggs says that Blake is the neurosurgeon on call and the patient is losing time.

Karev and Arizona are arguing over Courtney’s birth plan. Arizona wants to do a risky procedure that will take Charles out while still leaving the rest of the babies to stay inside the womb. Back in Mr. McCall’s room Blake has started the procedure when Amelia shows up livid. She demands to know why Riggs let this happen and he says it is because she caught it and she knew what to do. Shepherd swats Blake away and takes over. Meredith and Jo are arguing over a patient because Jo has incorrectly prepped them. She was going off of orders from the last time she’d seen her, but Grey snaps at her not to assume things. Meredith says, “It’s fine. You’re just not Blake.” Jo tells her that she, of course, isn’t Blake. She says she knows that Meredith doesn’t like her, she is in Alex’s life to stay and that she has to start respecting her. Meredith thinks Jo is overreacting, which fuels the fires more. She wants Meredith to take a step out of their lives.

Courtney is officially in labor and about to give birth to Charles. Once he has made his official escape, Karev and Robbins have to help save his life. Amelia is talking to Mr. McCall’s wife and mistress. They are updating them on the status of his health when Mrs. McCall asks the other woman to disappear. Mrs. McCall says she has just gotten her husband back and she doesn’t want to lose him anymore. She wants the chance to love him again.

Maggie and Callie are intervening on Jo’s behalf with Meredith. They say that Grey treats Jo like a gnat and is constantly swatting her away. Meredith says they are all hard on their residents and while Callie agrees she also explains that they like them. Meredith tries (poorly) to convince them that she does like Wilson, but they don’t see it.

Amelia is still trying to save Mr. McCall in a new surgery. Blake is there as well and she wants to explain her process for the procedure she began earlier. Amelia begins with the observations that led her to noticing his need for it and that Dr. Riggs gave her the approval because he knew she was qualified for it. She continues on step by step for her. In another OR, Courtney is still in labor. Warren is trying to distract her by talking taxes. Returning to Amelia and Blake, we learn Mr. McCall has not survived his surgery. Blake asks if it was what she did, but Amelia says “No, you were perfect.” Riggs meets them in the hospital corridor and knows they have lost their patient. He offers to tell the wife because he knows Amelia has plans with Hunt.

We head over to Karev and Arizona who are talking over Charles. They say they saved the babies for a few more days (at least) in the womb. Karev is complimenting her on saving the babies with that risky procedure. The subject changes to Kepner when Karev asks if they’ve spoken. Arizona explains that she has tried, but doesn’t think April is hearing her. Over in Bailey’s office, Warren is talking to his wife about their finances. Bailey says that Arizona has requested him on her service because “apparently you are really good with moms.” Bailey is proud of her husband and also tells him that she has taken Courtney on as their official accountant. She wants to know if he is okay with it, which she seems more of a comment on the fact she earns a lot more money than he does. She tries to say it is a lot less work for him and wonders if that was alright with him. He tells her he is fine with it, but we’re left with the idea that it is not all that fine.

Karev takes Kepner aside to tell her that she needs to speak to Jackson. Kepner thinks it is sweet that they are so invested in her. She sarcastically tells him that they make a great team and snaps that they are “like the Supreme Court just trying to tell a woman what she can and cannot do.” Karev doesn’t want them to be hurt again though, which April understands. She says that she is hanging on to what little faith she has, but Jackson has been through too much that it isn’t right to tell him yet. Karev tells her that she isn’t helping – she’s making it worse.

Meredith finds Jo and explains, yes, she is hard on her. It’s because her friend has been through so much and she is being protective. She apologizes to Jo for “swatting her like a bug.” She follows it up by explaining to Jo though that you are what you allow. She says if you let them pluck your wings than they will. Meredith wants her not to let that happen and not to let her push her around either. But she also wants Jo to know that for the record, she is rooting for her and Alex to work out.

Hunt checks in with Amelia to see if she is ready soon to head out on their date. He can see she has had a long, tough day and is willing to cancel. He wants to know if it has anything to do with Riggs and she says it isn’t because he’s great and could see why they had been friends before. She explains that she’s in a mood because of Blake. Blake is talented and a natural neurosurgeon. She is just upset because she feels obligated to teach her how to use that talent. With that, Owen says is cancelling dinner, but still has the perfect way to make Amelia feel better. He takes her to the Pediatric Unit to give her some time with the puppies!

Outside the hospital, Meredith runs into Thorpe who says he is there to talk to her. He says he knows she has been avoiding his calls and came to see her because if she wanted to turn him down it would be person. “Looking at my very nice face makes it hard to say no,” he tells her.

Kepner asks a nurse if she’s seen Dr. Avery. On a mission to confess about her pregnancy. She finds him in a lab with Arizona. When she walks in, Jackson is in shock. He looks hurt, confused and pissed. All he says is, “Why is she telling me this?” Gulp.
