Q) Tell us the story behind your latest single, “Woah Man.”
A) “Woah Man” was inspired by my own personal journey of self-discovery and empowerment, as well as the countless incredible women I’ve met along the way. It’s a feminist anthem that embraces both strength and vulnerability, showing that the two can (and do!) coexist. I wanted to create something that not only acknowledges the challenges women face, but also celebrates their resilience, power and impact on the world. The message is simple: Your voice matters, your story matters and you are far stronger than you realize. This song is a tribute to women everywhere: our nurses, doctors, creatives, politicians, teachers, stay-at-home mums, etc. “Woah Man” honors those who came before us and paves the way for those still to come.
Q) This song is perfectly timed for Women’s History Month. Was that just a coincidence, or were you always hoping to release this to highlight strong women?
A) I knew I wanted to release a song that honored women and “Woah Man” just felt like the perfect fit. The release timing lined up beautifully with both International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, which makes it even more special. I couldn’t think of a better way to honor and celebrate one another than through this song.
Q) I am sure you have been hearing tons of stories from women who have been reaching out to tell you how they connect with the song and how it inspired them. What are some of your favorite messages you have received?
A) Hearing the ways people connect with my music is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do. I’ve received messages from single mums, women in male-dominated industries and young girls just finding their voice. It’s incredibly moving. One person told me that “Woah Man” reminded them of a Spice Girls song, which I absolutely loved! I grew up listening to them and they were all about female empowerment, so that comparison truly made my heart so happy.
Q) “Close a business deal with a baby on my hip” are just some of your uplifting and true-to-life lyrics from “Woah Man.” Do the words about Shania teaching you how to take praise resonate with your personal story the most?
A) Oh, absolutely! Shania Twain defined the 90s and early 2000s. Even now, she’s still just as iconic. I think it would be difficult to find someone who doesn’t know and love a Shania song. Tracks like “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” and “Any Man of Mine” are instant confidence boosters. She taught an entire generation of women to own their power and that’s exactly what I hoped to channel in “Woah Man.”
Q) I love that this song was created in hand with your non-profit initiative, I Know a Woman, which supports females with mental health funding, opportunities, and community. How can others get involved in helping to uplift those a part of your organization?
A) I Know a Woman was built on the foundation of community. Nashville has always been an incredible place for songwriters and artists, but there was a gap when it came to mental health advocacy. That’s why I co-founded the non-profit during the pandemic – a time when so many of us were struggling. I think one of the simplest yet most impactful ways to help is by checking in on the people around you. A quick “thinking of you” text or a phone call on your way home can mean the world to someone who’s having a rough day. Recognizing the signs when someone may be struggling and just being there can make all the difference.
Q) With “Woah Man” out now, is this a prelude to a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) Yes! My Happy Hour EP is set to release at the end of May, and I cannot wait for everyone to hear it. It’s a collection of songs that really reflect where I am right now, both personally and artistically. My “sad girl era” ended with the release of my Something We Used to Say” album and I’m excited to start this next chapter.
Q) You’ll be headed out on the Happy Hour Tour this summer. What are some of your favorite songs to perform live?
A) Great question! Honestly, it changes depending on the crowd and which songs they’re vibing with the most. Lately, “Hypothetically” has been such a fun one to perform and there are a few unreleased tracks that I’m really excited about, too. There’s just something magical about sharing new music with a live audience for the first time.
Q) Will fans be able to expect a live rendition of “Woah Man” while you’re on this tour?
A) Of course! This one will be so fun to perform live. I recently released a music video for “Woah Man” and got fans involved in the project, which was such a blast. Singing and dancing with everyone who came out for it was such a special experience and I know that same energy is going to carry over to the stage.
Q) Who are some artists you would love to collaborate with in the future? I’ve got my fingers crossed for a Chappell Roan/Twinnie team-up!
A) Chappell would be legendary! I’ve been fortunate enough to collaborate with some amazing artists I really look up to like Lucie Silvas, but I would absolutely love to work with Sabrina Carpenter. And, of course, working with country queens like Shania or Dolly [Parton] would be a literal dream come true.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of you and the beautiful music that you make?
A) From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I’m just a girl from Yorkshire who came to Nashville to chase a dream and because of you I’m getting to live it every single day. Your support, your messages, your love – it all means more than I can ever fully put into words.
