Helena (Lena Olin) tells Martin (Lucas Englander) that it is her wish for Martin and Masha (Nicole Kidman). He says, “Mother, I don’t like her. I don’t trust her.” He says if she fails then they will fail. The scene is an extended version of an earlier one where Martin speaks to Helena as she is coughing up blood in the bathroom. Helena comes out to tell Martin, Masha won’t fail because she doesn’t fail unlike some people she knows.
Masha comes to the house asking how Helena is doing. Martin says she is good. When Masha makes it to the room, Helena is bedridden and using an oxygen machine. She no longer has hair and her head is wrapped in a scarf. She tells Masha she is too good to her. Helena tells Masha she wants her to have the company. She doesn’t want Martin to inherit it because she thinks he doesn’t have enough charm. She doesn’t have enough time left and they need a leader with vision. She thinks Masha is the right person to do that. In the present, Masha leaves the empty room.
Agnes (Dolly De Leon) joins Martin in the room and asks if he is alright. He says no one has asked him that in a long time. She asks again and he says he put one of his patients in danger because he follows orders. He thinks he brings things on himself because of his own cowardice. He asks her about her crisis of faith and what it felt like. She says it feels like you’re never standing or walking, just moving further and further away from yourself. Martin says he thinks he’s having a crisis of faith and asks if he is a bad person. He says he feels incapable of doing anything good and wants to understand if he is capable of doing evil. Tina (King Princess), Brian (Murray Bartlett), and Wolfie (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) join them and ask about Victoria’s (Christine Baranski) health. Martin tells them she had a bad reaction to the medication as David comes in. Martin tells them that Masha is putting everyone in danger. Martin then turns towards David (Mark Strong) saying they should ask him about Masha since she is his future business partner.
Peter (Henry Golding) alerts Masha and lets her know he knows about them supposedly going into business together. David asks if he’s been getting spied on, but Martin tells the others that David and Masha want to take the company from him. Peter tells Masha about his father and how he hated the power people could hold over him through a story from his childhood. He liked the power of having something that he could buy, something that he could own. Martin says the whole retreat has been about seducing an investor. He begins to speak to Martin in German to speak to Martin more privately.
David says that right now her father wants something from her. He will do and say whatever it takes to get what he wants, then he will disappear after giving you everything you want. David says Martin has no purpose, but Martin says he has been here. He took care of his mother and Masha swooped in and took everything over. Helena loved the pain Masha was going through. David says Helena knew exactly what she was doing and that her only mistake was making Martin Masha’s assistant because even that job is above his pay grade. Everyone except Martin and Agnes leave the room. Agnes tells him to be kind to himself as he stands silently staring with tears in his eyes at the flowers on the table. He removes the flowers from the vase and drops the vase onto the ground. He steps on the broken glass and stares at the camera as he does so.
Matteo (Aras Aydin) is explaining to Imogen (Annie Murphy) why her mother didn’t tell her about her health decline. He asks how much they talked within the last year and Imogen says maybe three or four times a year. Imogen thinks she didn’t think she could handle the news, but Matteo says Victoria wanted Imogen to remember her like she always did.
Martin storms to the lab and pulls out a container of the drugs they have been giving everyone. Agnes says she is worried about Martin because of what he said earlier. She says it puts her back in a dark place. Brian tells her he would trust her with his life, but that doesn’t appeal to Agnes because people did trust her but they died. She tells Brian she needs space to think and Brian leaves her bedroom.
Imogen wants to know what Victoria’s plan was in keeping her illness from her. Victoria tells her she has a couple more years if she takes care of herself correctly. Imogen talks about her session and going back to when her dad died. She’s afraid of losing Victoria too, but Victoria tells her she won’t lose her. She wants to make the most of the time they do have together.
Tina is discussing what’s happening to Wolfie, but Wolfie is on the other side of the room reading. Tina walks to her and says she sees that Wolfie is pushing her away because she pushed her away. She wants to skip this part but Wolfie doesn’t budge.
Imogen meets Peter outside at the fire pit. He says he was waiting for her to see how her and Victoria were doing. She asks him about spending time with his father, but he says he should have chosen to spend time with her instead. He says he spent most of his life scouring for love and attention from him, but the real reason he is here isn’t for him. Imogen tells him about his mother. He asks if they’ll be the same with their kids together or otherwise. The two share a soft and cute moment.
Brian lays in the bed when Dolsey Bear startles him. It doesn’t like being in the carriage because it feels like a coffin. Dolsey Bear tells Brian he’s thinking about what Agnes said and worried that what happened will never heal inside of him. Brian is still thinking about how he affected the child when he had his outburst on the show. He thinks its probably healthy for the children but Dolsey Bear continues to insult Brian. Brian says he’s not listening and stuffs him back inside the carrier.
Martin is hurriedly making a mixture with a huge does of the herb. He;s freaking out in the lab while Masha makes herself a cup of tea. Martin drinks the large dose at the same time that Masha drinks hers in her room. He continues to chug it down as Masha calls out for Helena.
David finds Helena taking the tea. While she talks to him about meeting with the people she has lost so that she can keep in touch with them, Martin reacts to the large dose he took. David begins to tell him how he can market the drug therapy and invest so that it can grow. Masha shuts down and ignores what he’s saying. She turns to him and says that she wants David to meet their daughter together. They will take a larger dose and talk to her. He asks her how it works and she asks if he trusts her. She kisses him and he says he trusts her when they separate.
David lays on the bed as Masha delivers the larger dose to him. She lays on the bed as well and tells him to close his eyes. While he does this, she acts as if she is putting the device on, but she moves it away. He falls under just as she gets up and meets Helena. Helena asks if she’s going through with it.
Tina is awoken by fireworks as Masha calls for everyone to meet downstairs for an emergency meeting. Everyone startles away and come out of their rooms. We see David wake up as Masha stands over him. He asks what is happening, but Masha shushes him and sends him back to sleep. Martin wakes up on the floor as Helena comes into the lab. She tells him she missed him. David asks what’s happening when he wakes up in front of all the other guests. Masha comes in dressed in all black telling him this is a sentencing. He says he did nothing wrong, but Masha just says thanks for participating and tells him this won’t be easy and it might be painful. But, he will grow from it.
