Talamasca: The Secret Order – The Puzzle Palace

We see a Talamasca member on a train with Helen’s sister in the past. The man questions the young girl and sees her gift of memory come fourth as she is able to retain small details when randomly questioned. He is delighted while the girl is confused and sad to be separated from her sister.

Back in the present, the episode picks up where the last ended. Doris (Celine Buckens) remains hidden in the trunk of the van while Jasper (William Fichtner) and Guy (Nicholas Denton) return to the London motherhouse. Since Doris gave the heads up, Jasper is curious as to who she is in Guy’s life. Despite not knowing each other well, he is hesitant to say anything. Guy demands to know why he cares. Jasper responds, “I don’t. I care about my book and I care when someone gets between me and my book.” Through his journey with the supernatural world, Guy has held a sense of entitlement. He is unaware of the world he is truly stepping into and the evils he is facing. He feels comfortable raising his voice to Jasper who is over this game. He is quick to remind Guy he is above him in this hierarchy. Jasper forcefully hits Guy to the ground and reveals his vampire teeth as a scare tactic. Guy pleads with Jasper telling him he is not ready to die.

Jasper hints at having a bigger plan and pushes Guy to his dungeon. He instructs Guy to dig his own grave. Previously, viewers saw this happen to Checkers (Will Brown) before he was turned into the trained monster he is. Jasper says he thought Guy was different from the typical person brought in by the Talamasca, but he was wrong. A smoke flare goes off in another room spooking the men. Jasper sends his henchman, Highsmith (Tomi May), to investigate. The sound of Highsmith being hit and falling can be heard. Jasper goes to check on the situation and is met with Doris using hairspray and a lighter to create a fire. She aims the fire at Jasper’s face and he instantly goes up in flames. Guy quickly pushes him down the stairs while grabbing Doris to run. Jasper is able to stumble to the cages and release his monsters. The duo manage to escape just in time.

Once out of danger, Guy questions Doris for her intentions. She keeps following him and saving him from danger but he is resistant to trusting her. She is firm in believing he is the one who had Keves (Amelia Clarkson) killed. Her intention is to seek justice for her friend. When they realize Jasper is most likely not dead, they know they have to flee the country. Guy contacts Helen (Elizabeth McGovern) for help.

Back at the police station,  Detective Loren (Matthew Steer) was able to find a photo of Guy from security footage. Previously, the night he was caught fleeing the crime scene, his face was out of view. Loren was able to search for his distinctive sneakers in other footage.   Detective Ridge (Bryony Hannah) is delighted at this find. She is soon called to the lab as they discovered a third DNA sample at the crime scene. This murder/suicide is now considered a double murder and Guy is their prime suspect.

Greg Owen (Jonathan Aris) struggles to look at Jasper as he updates him. He informs Jasper that his team is combing through footage to track where Doris and Guy went after fleeing the motherhouse. Jasper calls him out for diverting his eyes and instructs him to look at him. The reveal of Jasper completely burnt is a shock. He is unrecognizable but maintains his unbothered energy.

Guy is able to get in contact with Helen and Olive (Maisie Richardson-Sellers). Olive takes Helen to Guy’s place of work while he has been undercover. It is a “peep house” designed for women to give shows behind a glass wall after payment into a machine. Helen is instructed to go into a specific room and is greeted by Guy behind the glass after putting a coin in. He tells her he needs a way out of the country and money immediately. She scoffs and goes to leave before he persuades her to stay and listen. Her concern is still on the mission. Guy calls that out as not being the full truth. He knows her mission is beyond finding the book and he promises to help with that. She instructs him to go to a safe house and lay low until she can set up a way for passports to be made.

Doris returns to her Coven’s home and her fellow witch sisters are concerned. She will not reveal any information to them, just that she needs to leave. Given what just happened to Keves, they are on edge and scared for her. She ignores their concerns and leaves to rejoin Guy. The pair travel to the safehouse. Doris and Guy discuss their levels of trust when it comes to Helen and between each other. She questions why he joined the Talamasca and he informs her of his entire story. His ultimate goal is to find his mother and be of help to her as she is still in hiding from the Talamasca. He only agreed to join to get more information about her and everything else is secondary. They share an emotional understanding of both of their intentions.

The final moments are filled with plot twists and chaos. Helen retrieves a hidden gun to hold onto. Jasper has healed himself with his own blood. He has also let his monsters run free. Olive seemingly attempted to have Guy and Doris killed. Helen misled her earlier into thinking Guy was hiding out with the other witches. They are sadly attacked and killed by the creatures. Olive watches over as this happens. Her intentions appear to be more sinister. The detectives run a search for the third DNA. As it progresses e, they decide to take a break and get a pint. The audience sees the moment the DNA comes back as a match to Olive. Guy says he can tell Doris is hiding something from him but she dismisses it. The final shot pulls out to show the book in her possession under the bed.
