A Murder at the End of the World – Chapter 5: Crypt
By: Gladys Luna
Darby (Emma Corrin) realizes that Zoomer (Kellan Tetlow) is Bill’s (Harris Dickinson) son. After composing herself from the shocking news, she hugs the kid and smells him, probably as an attempt to find Bill’s scent on him. We are then taken to the past where she does the same to Bill while they are at a gas station. The two hug and tease each other while guessing each other’s smell until they realize that the forest near them has been set on fire. Darby gets a little scared by the view and asks for them to leave the place immediately while Bill says that if they continue like this, someday there just won’t be anywhere to go anymore. Back to the present, after checking his watch, Zoomer realizes that it is time to go and say goodbye to her before taking the elevator that leads to his room. When the door opens, Eva (Britian Seibert) comes out and asks Darby to go get some rest but the young woman is not ready to do that just yet. Instead, she asks her let her see Sian (Alice Braga). However, when she refuses to do that Darby starts asking questions about her actual job there. Based on the amount of morphine they store and the fact that she is practically Zoomer’s babysitter eventhough she’s a doctor, Darby believes that the kid must be sick but Eva says nothing. That is until Darby confronts her about how the morphine that killed Bill and the pacemaker monitoring system that was hacked and killed Rohan (Javed Khan) were stored in a room for which only she had access. The guilt and concern in Eva’s face is evident but she decides to remain silent. Seeing this, Darby walks straight to the elevator that leads directly to Andy’s room so she can confront him herself. Eva takes her to the tenth floor underground that she didn’t know anything about and finds Andy (Clive Owen) there having dinner with Zoomer and Lee (Brit Marling). Upon seeing the young woman’s intentions, Lee decides to take Zoomer to bed and give space for Andy and Darby to talk. Darby faces Andy and confesses that she knows that Bill is Zoomer’s biological father, which she thinks is a good reason for him wanting the guy dead. Although Andy suspected that the kid was not his biological son, he was surprised to find out the father’s identity and even admits that a while ago he learned that he was sterile he didn’t have the courage to say it wife or anyone else. Darby also confronts him about the fact that she knows he is sick and, once again, Andy is forced to confess that he is currently under a treatment and if he hasn’t said anything it is mostly because that may cause a huge impact. Also, he does not want his son to worry and, contrary to what the woman might think, Andy believes that he is the real target of the killer but Bill and Rohan just got caught up in the middle. He suggests they should work together since he is the key that could easily open the doors for her and her investigation. Then, he takes her to another room where they have access to a 3D model of the hotel where they scan everything happening there. Upon checking every single corner around the time that Bill was murdered, they come to the conclusion that the only one with suspicious activity was David (Raúl Esparza). They call for him so that Darby can interrogate him. Once he is taken there, the man believes this is just a joke but the other two seem to be very serious. Darby interrogates him about the reason why he was not in his room the night Bill died. He confesses that he was at Oliver’s (Ryan J. Haddad) instead to which Andy believes he is trying to steal the guy from him but Darby understands that this didn’t have to do with work at all. After David, they call Oliver to confirm the story and he admits that the two were having sex that night. However, David got a call that got him kind of twitchy so he asked him to leave him alone but sometime later he asked him to meet again. Oliver is not certain about the caller’s identity but he says that if there’s someone David don’t trust to is Lu Mei (Joan Chen) since he believes she’s a Chinese spy. Darby notices that the sole of his shoes is worn so she asks him if he can walk. That is when the man confesses he does but not for long. The one to be interrogated next is Lu Mei who says that the night that Bill died she was playing poker with Martin (Jermaine Fowler) and Lee and it was this last one who left the table for a moment. The young woman confronts her about her hacking skills and, although Lu Mei does not seem comfortable with the question, she ends up saying that she tried to hack the hotel’s system to ask for her people’s help to let her out of there but she couldn’t reach them. After the woman is gone Darby suggests they should interrogate Lee too but he refuses and wants to know who called David. He asks Ray (Edoardo Ballerini) about it and he says that the call came from Bill’s room. At that moment Marius (Christopher Gurr) enters the room saying that he has a call from The Wall Street Journal since they had already found out about Rohan’s death and want to talk with him about it. This makes Andy to lose control and scream out loud before attending the call.
Sometime after, Darby goes to Lee’s room where she is half asleep next to Zoomer but when she sees her she asks her to come in. Darby wastes no time in saying that she knows about Bill’s fatherhood confessing that she told everything to Andy and also tells her about the man’s condition. The news does not sit well on Lee so she asks for a moment to go to the bathroom while Darby takes the opportunity to rummage through her stuff and finds a black hair wig and a fake passport in her bag. Lee comes out of the bathroom catching her red-handed. Darby apologizes but the woman walks straight to her looking differently while saying that she has a lot of secrets and they need to talk. Just then Andy comes in and asks Darby to stay with them until she recovers from her concussion, but Lee convinces him to let her go and have some time for herself. Andy asks Todd (Louis Cancelmi) to take her to her room and on the way there he gives her his condolences for Bill’s passing and takes the opportunity to tell her that his brother was murdered by a group of guys who beat him and then drowned him so he avenged him. This is his attempt at trying to let her know that he understands her thirst for revenge. However, he says that he is also a loyal person and his loyalty is with Andy’s family. Darby enters her room and loses her mind. She takes some pills and then phones David to ask why Bill called him that night before he died but he hangs up on her. Her head is hurting and she’s starting to see double. That is when Ray begins talking to her but she cannot take it anymore so she rips the screen from the wall. She tries to calm down until Tomas (Daniel Olson) knocks at her door offering some food. She requests some chips to be left outside her door and then she turns back. Suddenly, she is attacked from behind by someone who uses a device to talk to her and ask her to give up on her search.
Back to the past we see that Bill and Darby are on the road when the guy asks her when did she fall for him, but she tries to avoid the question so he decides to tell when he fell for her. Bill assures her that it happened in three different parts: the first one when she told him the dead could talk to her, the second one was when they met at the bar saying that he knew they will be together forever and the third one hasn’t happened yet. Now it is Darby’s turn to confess but it seems she is having trouble facing her feelings so she asks him why he believes she has fallen for him. The two remain in silence for a while until she gets a notification with some information about the ring they had found in a prior episode (remember the silver ring with the E. Bell inscription on it?) saying that it was from the 1920’s so the person they are looking for must be somebody else. Darby seems to be happy about this and sticks to her phone that at times it appears she is not paying any attention to him when he only wants a break from it all; he stops by the side of the road and walks all the way to sit on a log followed by Darby who does not understand his change of behavior. She sits next to him while he says that phones are addictive and people are losing themselves in it. Here Darby confesses that the first time she fell for him was actually on the phone.
In the present time Darby is laying face flat on the floor watching the snow through her window recovering from the assault. She gets up and walks straight to Sian’s room where Eva is taking care of her. Darby apologizes but she understands that SIan was doing the right thing. She asks Eva to leave them alone for a moment and when she does Darby confesses what happened to her and also says what she knows about Zoomer. Sian confesses that at first, she thought that Lee was there for the money given that the kid makes a thousands of dollars a day thanks to his trust fund then, she asks her not to give up on her search. Next, she asks for some water and while Darby goes to grab some for her she dies. Outside Sian’s room Andy confronts her about the fact that every time she is around someone dies and she asks him if he knows about the fake passport his wife has but he thinks she is just talking nonsense due to her injury and tells her to go get some rest and wait for the police to come to interrogate her.
Later on Darby sees that Ziba (Pegah Ferydoni) and Lu Mei had set a bonfire outside and she joins them and shares the news about Sian’s passing and Andy’s safe room. Martin and Oliver join them later where they talk and Ziba suggests they should throw a ceremony for Bill, Sian and Rohan so their spirits can be set free. Lu Mei says her prayers for Sian. Ziba does for Rohan and when it is Darby’s turn to say her prayers for Bill, she confesses that if she does then, he won’t come back. Back to the past, Darby wakes Bill in the middle of the night to tell him that she has traced the ring history which has led her to the possible killer and also know about his last known address. Bill seems to be a little disconcerted about all of this and starts to believe that she is now obsessed then he sees that she appears to have been drinking and consuming some drugs and he calls her on it but she dismisses his words. Darby wants to go to the killer’s house but Bill only wants to go home; they fight about the next move for them, Darby lights a cigarette that she ends up throwing on the table starting a fire that fortunately, Bill manages to put out. Back to the present, Darby starts to hyperventilate and then runs back to her room where she drinks some more then, puts back the speaker she ripped of the wall earlier on and talks to Ray. She confesses that she does not want to be awake anymore and that she has started to believe that she has been in pain for so long that now there’s nothing left for her. Suddenly, somebody sends her a message in morse code using the lamp on the desk telling her they know why Bill called David and asking to meet them at the pool at 22:00. Darby goes to the encounter and the place is empty; she looks inside the pool where she can see something moving in the water so, she decides to get in slowly until she is fully submerged in it then, she hears some noises and all of a sudden, the cover of the pool starts closing and she swims as fast as she can to get out of there but it is too late now and the last thing she sees is somebody standing there at the edge of the pool watching her drown.
