Alannah McCready – Something Like That
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I would describe my sound as modern country with a dash of soul.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I definitely take inspiration from the strong women in country I grew up listening to like Faith Hill, Martina McBride and Reba! I’d like to think the music I grew up listening to influences the music that I write today. Currently, I am inspired by the strong women in country music like Miranda Lambert, Carly Pearce, Maren Morris and Ashley McBryde!
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Something Like That.”
A) When getting into relationships or talking about them, many of us have these detailed answers of all the specific things we want out of a relationship. Sometimes they get to be outrageous or nitpicky. But, over the years and many failed relationships, I have learned that what we need most are simple things. Life is too short and, at this point, I am looking for someone who can be honest with me, spend time with me and treat me well – or something like that! I am learning there isn’t much more that I need from a partner to be happy!
Q) How did you and Will Gittens come together to write this single?
A) Will and Sterling are two of the most talented people I have ever met and just so happen to be two of my best friends. So, when I decided to start a new project and release new music, I knew I wanted them to be involved! “Something Like That” is the first song Will and I wrote together, and I am beyond happy with how it turned out. I think writing with someone who knows you so well helps bring the best out of you emotionally. I cannot wait for y’all to hear the rest of the EP!
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I’m hoping listeners connect to a feeling of hope and self-love. I think many relationships don’t work because there is something we still have yet to learn about ourselves and, once we do, it becomes much easier to navigate what you deserve from a partner. I think fans can connect to the fact that maybe they aren’t the only ones going through a tough situation and can take comfort in that!
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) I think it depends on who is in the session with me. Every songwriter has their own method for writing. I love to co-write with others and see how they work and learn from their methods! I don’t personally play any instruments, so I usually come into a session with the start of lyrics and melodies I’ve come up with and then go from there with the other writer/producer!
Q) David Gittens lent a hand with the production on this track, but how much of a say do you have in the production of your music?
A) Sterling is one of the best producers I have ever had the pleasure of working with on a project! Will and I let him know the kind of vibe I wanted the song to have, but I trusted him to bring it to life. I think it turned out exactly as I envisioned – even better, actually! It is nice to work with people who know you because it lends a hand to how they produce your music!
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) Yes! The rest of the tracks for my five-song EP are being mixed and mastered as we speak! The EP will be released later this year so stay tuned!
Q) With concerts currently on hold, what have you missed most about being on stage?
A) I miss the crowds! There is nothing quite like performing a live show and looking out to see everyone singing and dancing and just happy! It’s hard to explain the feeling, but it means everything!
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) I love when I get to go home to Minnesota for a performance. There is just something about playing a hometown show that makes it that much more special!
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Well, this list is long! But, off the top of my head, a few artists I would love to collaborate with would be Dan + Shay, Jordan Davis, and Carly Pearce!
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I listen to all genres of music, but lately I’ve been really into Olivia Rodrigo’s music!
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I think social media allows us to connect with our fans in a way that never used to be possible. It gives you a genuine, direct link to your fans, allowing them to connect to the music on an even deeper level. Also, I think it gives us a platform to promote ourselves however we want, and it also allows for organic engagement with our fans.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thankyou! I cannot say thank you enough to those who support me and my music; it truly means the world! I literally wouldn’t be able to do what I love every day without them, and I am grateful beyond words.
